As we turn our thoughts to cooler weather, a wave of new hospitality bookings and the beauty of the upcoming holiday festivities, we are pleased to bring you our 35th Edition of CLARITY Business Magazine. It is amazing to me that we have been publishing this powerful publication for almost 10 years. As with everything we do here at MDGLCC, it is all about relationships. From our member content providers and advertisers to our print and layout team, CLARITY would not be possible without your support. And to our readers, thank you for continuing to demand this publication all across South Florida.

In this edition we focus on the ongoing improvements to one of our area’s major economic engines, The Miami Beach Convention Center. As the team at Spectrum (operators of the MBCC) prepare for this year’s Art Basel extravaganza, we take pride that the work proceeds on target. When all the construction is completed in 2018, we will have an amazing new facility to welcome the new business expected to follow. Enjoy the read.

Happy Holidays to each of you!

It’s not uncommon for passersby to poke around the lobby of the Langford Hotel in search of an ATM. The 126-room boutique hotel, which opened in April, occupies the former Miami national Bank building—erected in 1925 and added to the national Register of Historic Places in 1989—boasting eclectic Prohibition Era décor, a façade that still resembles a financial institution, and reception desks modeled after classic bank teller stations.

Langford Sales Manager and MDGLCC member Alan newman feels the hotel’s presence is one of the first steps toward the revitalization of Miami’s slowly rallying Downtown area. Change is happening, he says, citing a buzzing nightlife in the area like he’s never witnessed before. In the evenings, a young, hip, multicultural crowd fills the streets, lining up to gain entry to the hotel’s rooftop, which offers breathtaking views of what Alan calls “the convergence between old and new Miami.”

At the Pawn Broker, the Langford’s rooftop bar, go

outside the box with the Giggle Water, a gin-based cocktail served in a miniature porcelain bathtub. At PB Station, the in-house restaurant, don’t miss the Flanarroz con Leche, a brûléed dessert hybrid that is the “most Miami of desserts.”

To engage the local community, the Langford hosts a monthly, open breakfast series, Disrupt Miami, connecting “like-minded individuals with innovators who are shaping Miami’s future.” Likewise, Alan has reached out to the MDGLCC, hoping to educate fellow members about the hotel’s presence and Downtown’s resurgence. “[The Chamber] is completely and wholly focused on wanting us to succeed and helping us achieve that.”

Alan may be celebrating the holidays with his family this year as part of their annual nochebuena tradition — “a lovely, stressful evening” — but you may find him at the Pawn Broker after the celebration dies down, sipping white cosmos and looking ahead to 2017.

SouTH BE ACH JA zz FESTIVAL FInDS HARMonY WITH DISABILIT Y AWAREnESSThis December, while meandering down Lincoln Road Mall, you may bump into a Grammy-winning jazz musician or two.

The reason is the first-ever South Beach Jazz Festival—brainchild of disabilities advocate and visual artist David new—with free and ticketed performances from December 7th through the 11th. The festival features jazz acts and ensembles that showcase at least one person with a disability.

Through his non-profit organization, Power Access, David new produces experiential events centered on awareness and inclusion. As chairman of the Miami Beach Disability Access Committee, David has spent the past 6 years demystifying disabilities and breaking down barriers. “I believe disabilities and challenges are interchangeable. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have a challenge in their life.”

A rare disease at the age of 30 left David blind, deaf and immobile from the waist down. Rejecting his doctors’ terminal diagnosis, he learned to walk again and gradually regained his hearing. now, at the age of 46, David is founder and board member for the Miami Beach Council of the Blind, campaigning for greater accessibility for the disabled throughout South Florida.

Staging his event on Lincoln Road, David hopes to engage all of Miami Beach and create a palpable, community-friendly atmosphere. In a way, he hopes that festivalgoers won’t immediately recognize the connection to disability awareness. “Perhaps,” he muses, “they’ll realize it organically.”

Festival highlights include jazz legend Diane Schuur performing alongside Ed Calle’s Mamblue Big Band; Raul Midón at the historic Colony Theater; and the French Horn Collective at the open-air Lincoln Road Stage.

A newcomer to the MDGLCC, David hopes his messages of inclusion can bring the LGBTQ and disabled communities together. After his event closes on the 11th, David presumes he’ll be recovering at home, listening to Ella Fitzgerald records, and preparing for the second annual South Beach Jazz Festival.

Event calendar, ticket information, and sponsorship opportunities can be found at sobejazz.com. The South Beach Jazz Festival is sponsored by the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

The name “Hydrate Medical of South Florida” might evoke an image of an ocean-themed bus cruising down Washington Avenue, distributing water bottles to parched South Beach pedestrians. In actuality, Hydrate Medical is a concierge mobile hydration service treating jet lag, fatigue, overexertion, and overindulgence with immunity-boosting, IV drip cocktails.

Within minutes, you’ll experience a 60-70% reduction in symptoms. At the end of the 45-minute session, you’ll be 80% recovered. Within 2 to 3 hours, once the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants have kicked in, you’ll be asking, “What hangover?”

Hydrate Medical CEo and board certified emergency physician Jonathan A. Leake, M.D., has custom-made drips designed for specific needs and ailments, such as the Hydrate Athlete, Hydrate Beauty, and Hydrate Hangover (IV fluids supercharged with B vitamins, magnesium, antioxidants and medication).

So how can you avoid dehydration and debilitating hangovers? According to Dr. Leake, it begins with creating better water consumption habits. And if you’re going out, be sure to drink 2 glasses of water per alcoholic drink, avoid brown liquors, and cancel your plans for the following day. You need the sleep.

With two additional locations in Charlotte and Lake norman, n.C., Hydrate Medical is in the midst of a rapid expansion, eyeing new opportunities in Asheville, Charleston and Dallas. Dr. Leake has been engaging the LGBTQ community at local events—marching in the Charlotte Pride Parade and sponsoring the Pridelines Masquerade Ball in Coral Gables—and partnering up with health and wellness organizations nationwide. After all, his mission is rooted in the universal idea that people should look and feel their best… regardless of what happened the night before.

our readers would like to know more about you. Please share with us a bit of your personal/professional background.

My name is Aletha Player and I am a South Florida native. I received my bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bethune-Cookman university and earned my MBA from the university of Miami. I work as an area manager for External Affairs at Florida Power & Light Company, where I began my career as a summer student working in Customer Service. I have worked in more than twelve different departments throughout Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Later, I was promoted to managing a Regional Customer Care Center and directing a highly trained account management technical staff. My current responsibilities as area manager in External Affairs include managing strategic issues and relationships with governmental agencies and community-based organizations.

on a more personal note, I live my life exemplifying the adage: “So long as we love, we serve.” I belong to various social, civic and business boards including:

» The Florida State Conference of the nAACP Board of Advisors

The one accomplishment I am most proud of is receiving the distinguished honor of being listed in the united States Congressional Record by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson for my work ethic and service to the South Florida community.

florida Power & light is under the corporate umbrella of NextEra Energy, Inc. Please help us distinguish how the companies differ.

nextEra Energy, Inc. is a leading clean energy corporation that features two principal subsidiaries, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and nextEra Energy Resources. other notable subsidiaries include nextEra Energy Partners, nextEra Energy Services and FPL Fibernet.

FPL is nextEra’s biggest subsidiary and the largest rate-regulated electric utility in Florida. It serves more than 4.8 million customer accounts or more than 10 million people in the state with a service area covering 35 counties. It is the third-largest utility in the united States and employs about 9,000 people.

FPL’s typical 1,000-kWh residential customer bill is approximately 30 percent lower than the latest national average and, in 2015, was the lowest in Florida among reporting utilities for the sixth year in a row. FPL’s service reliability is better than 99.98 percent, and its highly fuel-efficient power plant fleet is one of the cleanest among all utilities nationwide. The company received the top ranking in the southern u.S. among large electric providers, according to the J.D. Power 2016 Electric utility Residential Customer Satisfaction StudySM, and was recognized in 2016 as one of the most trusted u.S. electric utilities by Market Strategies International.

nextEra Energy Resources, LLC, together with its affiliated entities, is the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun and in 2015, nextEra Energy Inc, generated revenues of approximately $17.5 billion and has 14,300 employees in 27 states and Canada.

fPl has a history of supporting diverse markets in South florida. Please share with us fPl’s objectives in this area.

At FPL, we’re working with the communities we serve to make Florida a better place to work and raise a family. Companies only succeed when the communities they do business in are successful. We believe that doing the right thing means supporting our communities and being true to our values. our commitment to diversity is reflective of our values as well as our commitment to community.

Many large corporate American companies have lGBT Employee resource Groups (ErG’s) for employees to align with. what is the name of your lGBT ErG group and how can employees participate?

The name of our LGBT Employee Resource Group is “The nextEra of Pride and Allies.” The group is inclusive and open to every employee.

As a long-standing corporate Partner member of MDGlcc, what makes the chamber worthy of your support?

As I said, at FPL, we’re working with the communities we serve to make Florida an even better place to work and raise a family, which means being engaged with key organizations like MDGLCC that serve the needs and interests of our community. FPL is involved in more than 75 chambers of commerce and non- profit organizations in Miami-Dade County. In this highly diverse community, it is important that our employees have a presence in business groups, as well as social and civic organizations. Chambers of commerce provides a wealth of information. The resources that are available help us identify emerging issues, receive external input and develop longstanding relationships.

For the first time ever, Adrian novello is not traveling to Buenos Aires for Christmas, and he’s looking forward to seeing the shopping mall Santa. “In Argentina,” he says, “Santa is sweating in his shorts.” This cannot be good for Santa’s image.

With over two decades of experience in branding, advertising and communications, Adrian novello is the founder and Chief Creative officer at the Lion Agency—an award-winning marketing firm with offices in Miami, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo.

Adrian’s design process begins by understanding his client’s goals. He absorbs as much information as possible and then sits down with a blank piece of paper to begin sketching. The logo, he confesses, can be the most challenging—especially for LGBT brands and events. “In one moment you have to tell

a lot of things, a lot of stories.” The solution? Design from the heart. “Put how the business owner feels about the company into the logo.”

For businesses with minimal marketing budgets, Adrian’s advice is to focus on the necessities: logo, business cards, website. use social networks, use search engine optimization, and use social media metrics to see what’s working—and what’s not working.

But despite the importance of virtual presence, Adrian still puts high value on face time (no, not the app). “People need to see you. People need to share ideas in person.” A frequent attendee at MDGLCC gatherings, he is constantly shaking hands and making new connections. Adrian met his business partner, Justin Bell, at the MDGLCC Chihuly night event at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in 2015; four months later, Adrian and Justin’s companies merged.

This season, the Lion Agency is preparing for some exciting collaborations with Elizabeth Arden, Art Basel and American Express. But on a personal level, Adrian is energized about his first “real Christmas” in South Florida… and without a sweat-stained Santa.

year since CAREERXCHANGE became a member of the great Miami Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. As the first staffing firm to join specializing inIT/Accounting/Administrative and Light industrial contract and direct hire recruiting; we can definitely say we have mutually accomplished a lot together. Since our first meeting, we have gotten our name out, recruited new candidates, generated new clients to staff for, filled their positions, and placed new employees to work through our firm. We have also had the pleasure of educating non profit organizations like PRIDELINES by being guest speakers at their Young Professionals Network where they learned resume building skills, job search tips, how to interview properly when trying to land a desired position, and many other types of career advancement tools. Furthermore, we have been able to utilize the Chamber’s network to assist the Miami Heat in putting together an amazing event at the American Airlines Arena remembering the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting that will take place on October 22nd of 2016. A lot of upward mobility has occurred between our partnership with the MDGLCC and we definitely look forward to see what our future together continues to have in store.”— Nick Alonso, Jr.

the MiaMi BeaCh Convention Center wiLL Be unDerGoinG a $515 MiLLion renovation anD expansion, which will set a high standard of excellence and redefine meeting and entertainment solutions when hosting large-scale business, trade, civic and cultural events.

Miami Beach’s professional design team consisting of nationally recognized Fentress Architects, the local design firm of Arquitectonica, and international landscape architects West 8, have designed a project that will position itself among the top globally significant convention centers in the world. Built in 1957, the center has expanded throughout the years from its original 108,000 square feet to its current size of 1.2 million square feet.

The new 1.4 million square foot, LEED certified facility will include a state-of-the-art, 60,000 square foot grand ballroom, additional

meeting rooms with flexible arrangements, a 20,000 square foot glass rooftop junior ballroom, advanced technology, and new versatile indoor/outdoor public spaces.

For added convenience, 800 parking spaces located across the street from the center will be relocated within the footprint of the building thus allowing the 5.8 acre parking lot to be converted into a public park surrounded by canopy trees, a flexible lawn area, a food pavilion, and a public plaza to honor the city’s veterans. The park will become the new civic “heart” of Miami Beach as well as a shady destination long awaited by the residents of adjoining neighborhoods.

In addition, a new pedestrian friendly and ecologically sensitive green space incorporating butterfly gardens and mangrove enhancements will span along the Collins Canal incorporating a native plant palette and providing pedestrian

connectivity for residents and visitors.

The historic Carl Fisher Clubhouse, the oldest public structure in Miami Beach, will be restored to its original glory and transformed into a venue for the public to enjoy. Finally, a $7 million art budget will enable several selected and world renowned artists to incorporate public art into the project under Miami Beach’s Art in Public Places ordinance.

seeking a night on the town, Joan Schaeffer and her wife Roberta recently stopped in at a local bar—one often frequented by an older, predominantly gay crowd. As they walked in, a single thought crossed Joan’s mind: Where are all the people like us?

Joan has spent recent months opening a Miami affiliate for SAGE, a national organization that advocates for and improves the lives of LGBT elders. now that SAGE Miami has arrived, Joan and her associate Donna Dambrot, Program Director of SAGE Miami, have identified four crucial issues affecting South Florida’s LGBT elders: loneliness, culturally competent healthcare, affordable housing, and case management services.

To address these concerns, Joan and Donna are working to create opportunities for socialization, train institutional caretakers in cultural sensitivity, schedule home visits for those who require assistance, and provide long overdue support to victims of trauma—be it discrimination or losses suffered as a result of the AIDS crisis. In the future, SAGE Miami hopes to provide housing to those in need and build robust LGBT communities.

A Miami resident since 1977, Joan has lived through the LGBT community’s growing pains and witnessed its remarkable milestones. “It’s important for young people to know the history of where we come from and how we got to where we are,” Joan says, which is why SAGE Miami is also organizing intergenerational activities and workshops. “open your hearts to those who came before you and paved the way. They took on the brunt of the hardship.”

Joan and Donna attribute their decades of selfless social service to a deep respect for others. “When you care for people, and it comes out of your heart,” Donna says, “it’s a feeling that lifts you high.”

Longtime MDGLCC members, Joan and Donna hold regular coffee-and-conversation gatherings and are planning an official SAGE Miami launch this november. Visit sageusa.org for updates and information.

After her tenure at Kentuckiana Children’s Center in Louisville, providing holistic care to children with special needs, Dr. Wendy Gallego opened her own wellness practice in 2003. Focused on collective care for all individuals—from CEos to college athletes—Shin Wellness offers a range of treatments including chiropractic, neurofeedback, acupuncture, spinal decompression, reiki, and tai chi.

Holistic medicine involves the consideration of the complete person—physical, psychological, spiritual—and it’s relevant now more than ever:

Studies have found that stress, overscheduling, and incessant multitasking are taking a significant toll on our minds, bodies and spirits.

Just as we take our vehicles in for regular oil changes and maintenance, Dr. Gallego suggests that we do the same for our bodies. A specialist in chiropractic medicine, she argues that holistic care is most effective when it’s habitual. “You should go to a chiropractor to prevent pain and to promote wellness.”

Shin Wellness’s “zen cozy” facility is located in the heart of Midtown Miami. To create a zen

cozy atmosphere in your own

office, Dr. Gallego suggests investing in simple enhancements: desk lamps to offset fluorescent lighting, incense to create a calming environment, and mobile apps with built-in reminders to take a break or a breath during rigorous work sessions.

A longtime member of the MDGLCC, Dr. Gallego confesses that the Chamber is a wonderful tool for networking and bringing visibility to her practice—but that it also “truly feels like family.” She looks forward to December when her parents and in-laws descend upon South Florida, drop in at Shin Wellness, and inevitably book sessions for every treatment in the place.

Cities aCross the Country are CaLLinG on poLiCe DepartMents to iMpLeMent CoMMunity poLiCinG strateGies to iMprove the reLationships Between poLiCe anD Citizens — strategies that retired police officer Jeffrey Giordano has been employing for decades.

During his time in the force, Giordano served as a member of the street narcotics unit and as a hostage negotiator for the Miami SWAT team, among other positions. He defines community policing as becoming “the face of the neighborhood” and acting as community liaison, thereby gaining the respect and confidence of the residents and local businesses. “I look at every human being as a human being, as a person… and then I find the root of the problem.” Giordano’s longtime efforts in the Brickell area earned him a Community Policing officer of the Year commendation in 2008.

After nearly 30 years with the Miami Police Department, he now operates Giordano Protection Services, a boutique

firm providing private investigation services with retired police officers, armed and unarmed uniformed security, security assessments, surveillance services, and concierge services for high-end clientele.

What can business owners do to better protect themselves? “Be prepared,” Giordano says. “Don’t rely on your local government during a disaster or in emergency situations. Their resources may be depleted.” Instead, have a personal plan. Become familiar with the national Incident Management System (nIMS) and adopt their standards and protocols.

Around the holidays, Giordano reminds us to use common sense and a heightened awareness. Most robberies and scams involve some form of distraction, so don’t leave expensive items or storefronts unattended. “If something doesn’t look right, follow your insights.”

A new member to the MDGLCC, Giordano reports that the Chamber “has been a tremendous asset for networking.” If you don’t catch him at the next Chamber gathering or cocktail party, you might spot him at his table of choice at Perricone’s, his go-to Italian restaurant in his old Brickell stomping grounds.

the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has plenty of opportunities for its members to get involved by volunteering their time and expertise to one of the many committees working on either Events, Gala, Advocacy, Women’s Empowerment, Communications, and Membership. Participants of the Membership Committee are charged with membership retention and recruitment.

They assist in identifying member benefits and as such develop and plan accordingly to offer members activities and programs to enhance their membership in MDGLCC. It supports the mission and accomplishments of the Chamber internally and externally. As a member of this committee the following members get to connect with potential clients for themselves while functioning as Chamber Ambassador for the Chamber.

As a community chamber (versus a civic chamber), we encourage both our gay and gay-friendly family to support those who support us. one of the benefits of membership in MDGLCC is the knowledge that a $8 billion local LGBT market searches our roster of members first when making purchase decisions about goods and services. With a list of over 600 companies comprising our membership, more likely than not you will find what you are looking for.

As corporate America looks to diversify its revenue stream, the LGBT market is increasingly being looked to for growth. The best way we can make the greatest impact is to speak with our pocketbooks and use Chamber Members whenever possible.
