we’ve included some stories to provide insight into revolutionary
approaches we’re using to treat patients.
The opening of the Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion
(APCP) was celebrated at a special preview event honoring the
success of Together For The Children, The Campaign For Miami
Children’s. The pavilion offers one of the most technologically
advanced medical settings in the nation. Each individual patient
room is a focal point of care and the latest communications and
ill patients in new intensive care units. On top of all that, it’s a
beautiful family-centered environment designed for the comfort
of our families.
We also highlight the intraoperative magnetic resonance
imaging (iMRI) system we’ve just acquired. It enhances surgical
procedures with highly accurate, real-time digital images of the
brain during surgery. Think about what a difference this makes
in delicate brain surgery! There’s also a story about little Hayden

are meant to do. We keep coming up with ways to use this
incredible technology. Read more exciting news in the Hospital

The Miami Children’s Young Ambassadors’
(MCYA) annual philanthropic fashion show
continues to get bigger and better each year.
The 5th Annual Fashion Gives Back, held
recently at The Moore Building in Miami’s
Design District, brought together 400 of the
city’s young professionals to raise funds and
awareness for the patients and families who
depend on Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Guests
mingled while enjoying delectable bites and
cocktails, followed by a fashion show of the
season’s latest trends presented by Neiman
Marcus Bal Harbour.
In addition to the dazzling runway show,
the event also featured some special guests,
including Olympic swimmer Cullen Jones, who
assisted in the program by announcing the
names of the giveaway winners. The guest
of honor, however, was Nicklaus Children’s
Hospital patient Astry, who, at the end of
the fashion show, brought all guests to their
feet as she walked the runway. Astry was
diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she
was 3 months old, and was expected to be
life. After undergoing 10 years of therapy at
Nicklaus Children’s, Astry is now able to walk
with the assistance of a walker.
Serving as this year’s honorary chair
for Fashion Gives Back was Farrell & Patel,
Attorneys at Law, while event founder Ricky
Patel served as co-chair alongside Zak Mann.

Visits to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital are
always an exciting and emotional experience,
both for the patients and the visiting guests.
Recently, MCH Foundation hosted two such
visits with co-host of Univision Network’s
“Primer Impacto” Barbara Bermudo, and with
actress and singer Liz Elias. Bermudo’s visit
turned out to be an impactful
and emotional experience.
On a tour of the Cardiac
Intensive Care Unit, Bermudo
met the family of a 2-month-
old patient whose life was
saved, thanks to the treat-
ment he received at Nicklaus
Children’s. Bermudo also
had a meet-and-greet with
a Patient of the Month, Luna
and her family. She left the
hospital deeply affected and inspired
by what she learned. She shared her
experience with her viewers that af-
ternoon in a segment of her show on
Univision, “Primer Impacto.” During
Elias’ visit, she felt connected to the
hospital because, growing up in
Miami, she was already familiar with the
institution. Not only did she learn more
about the hospital’s most recent innova-
tions, Elias also participated in a drum
circle with patients led by Music Therapy
specialists, which brightened the patients’
spirits and brought some much needed
distraction from their hospital stay.

Brighten Patients’ Days
In the days before the 10th Anniversary
Diamond Ball, both of the event’s honored
guests, Hall of Fame inductee José Feliciano
and Master of Ceremonies Louis Aguirre, took
time out of their busy schedules to visit and
learn more about Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
In addition to his tour where he learned about
some of the latest technology at the hospital,
Feliciano also participated in a musical activity
of the new Advanced Pediatric Care
Pavilion (APCP). In a drum circle led by
specialists from the Music Therapy
department, patients sang and played
instruments while Feliciano serenad-
ed the group on his guitar. Aguirre’s tour
included visits to patients in the cardiac unit
of the APCP where he learned directly from
the families the impact the new facilities have
had on patient care. A Miami native, Aguirre
remarked at the growth the hospital has made
from how he remembers it when he was a
child, and was amazed at the innovations he
heard about.

Corporate Corner: Citrix
Miami Children’s Health
Foundation is grateful for the
opportunity to work with companies
who repeatedly take their commitment
to the next level by motivating the
community and their employees to
give back to our mission.
One such company is Citrix, which this year served as the title
sponsor for our 6th Annual Miami Children’s Health Foundation 5K
Run/Walk. The company, which provides solutions that make the
world’s apps and data secure and
easy to access, reaches out to the
community through its Corporate
Citizenship Program. Earlier this
year, Citrix employees assembled
500 care packages for patients at
Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The company is also planning to send
employees to volunteer at the hospital, where they will give back to
the patients and families. A very special thank you to Citrix and its
employees for all of their dedicated support!

3rd Annual Bake

Brings Awareness
to Community
More than 200 participants “baked” a
difference on Nov. 19 during the third annual
community-wide “Bake a Difference” event.
Family and friends throughout Miami-Dade and
Broward counties set up bake stands to raise
and families at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
Knots of Hope (KOH), an MCH Foundation
Guild, partnered with our President’s Cabinet
to lead this great initiative. This year, $25,000
was raised by our sweet participants who made
a difference in the lives of patients at Nicklaus
Children’s Hospital.
President’s Cabinet Members
The President’s Cabinet is comprised of established
business and community leaders. Its primary mission
is to raise awareness and educate the community on the
importance of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
