Ongoing: Fall 2015 & Spring 2016 MiAmi (Mi = my in Spanish; Ami = friend in French)Haiti and Cuba: Twin Heartbeats of Miami, a Youth Leadership Project

Created by Miami Herald photojournalist Carl Juste in partnership with Miami Book Fair, this project will bring together 21 students from Miami Dade College’s Honors College to collaborate on a project inspired by the forthcoming book, Havana and Haiti: Two Cultures, One Community, which explores the cultures of Haiti and Cuba through photography and essays by more than 40 photojournalists and writers.

This pilot program will start at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year with students from all eight MDC campuses, and will extend into the spring.

The students will follow a curriculum created by program instructors Carl Juste, CW Griffin and Anjanette Delgado, and travel together into each other’s neighborhoods to do research and execute the work. They will share and discuss their life experiences and the work in development with each other and their mentors in an effort to get at deeper truths while dispelling stereotypes and myths.

Travel Stories: How to Write the World with Tom Swick During this course, you will develop travel stories with the intent of eventually publishing them. Discover the seven key elements – a personal voice, a point of view, imagination, insight, humor, people, dialogue – and how best to incorporate them into your stories. You will learn how to find a theme in your disparate and seemingly random experiences of visiting a place, create a narrative arc that readers can easily follow, and, if possible, incorporate a sense of suspense to hook your audience. Tom Swick will provide examples of strong travel writing to be discussed in class. At the end of the course, we will focus on the publishing markets – both print and online – for travel stories, and how to write an efficient and appealing query letter.
