Nucleus Central Control HMI allows rail traffic control personnel to monitor and dictate train movement at stations, interlockings, and throughout the entire rail line. Miami MetroRail typical operation includes the 22 station Green Line and the 16 station Orange line. Train storage and maintenance occurs at Lehman Yard, located between the two northernmost stations. The Yard Green, and Orange lines can all be controlled through Nucleus at the Central Control Facility.

In addition to manual routing and switch control, Nucleus supports complex entrance-exit routing. A route can be set through an interlocking by a rail traffic controller at central control in four clicks of a mouse. The same route

can be canceled in two. The simplicity of the routing system ensures safe and efficient operation by any rail traffic controller.

The train control software interfaces with train-wayside communication devices on board the train cab, and with automatic routing capabilities.

Occupied sections of track are shown in red, with train tracking information

linked to each occupancy. Rail traffic control personnel can keep seamless track of train car information, operator identification, line assignment, and headway through train tracking in this system. The automatic integrated scheduling assigns a line and a run to each train at terminal stations, but all information can be edited and controlled by rail traffic controllers as field conditions change.

Occupied track segments throughout the yard and mainline are transmitted to central control through indications triggered by shorted track segments. Nucleus Central Control integrates the TSE Train Tracker application to attach additional identifying information to track occupancies, following trains as they move along the mainline.

Train tracker boxes display the line assignment (shown with background color), train operator, trip number, run number, car number(s), direction of travel, and headway of the train. Trains can be removed when taken out of service, or marked non-revenue when on the mainline without passengers. The integrated train tracking provides valuable real-time information about every train on the line, creating more efficient operation for rail traffic control personnel.

The unified Yard control and Central control systems allow for yard control personnel to attach train identification information to trains as they exit the yard and enter the mainline. Rail traffic control personnel can edit this information as trains change line assignment, operators cycle shifts, or trips change throughout the day or at terminal stations.

Integrated scheduling allows for automatic track tracker information assignment at terminal stations. Throughout service, the train trackers import data from the schedule and display the data on train control screens.

MetroRail daily schedules are imported into Nucleus from the scheduling database, and integrated into the train tracking system. Trains are assigned to a particular trip number in the schedule, and train arrival and departure times are logged against scheduled times. On time, early, and late departures are color-coded in the master schedule, as well as on each train tracker box—border colors reflect the schedule adherence of the train.

Rail traffic control personnel with the proper access privileges can maintain and change the daily schedule. The scheduling database contains a bank of varying schedules for the entire MetroRail system. One schedule is imported at the start of daily operations, but can be altered or reset to meet field conditions.

Rail traffic control personnel can annul or restore trips in the schedule, or bypass particular scheduled stops as needed. The system is designed both to work automatically, and to be highly customizable and adjustable as necessary.

MDT Lehman Yard control with Nucleus

MetroRail’s maintenance and operations facility control system is integrated into the Nucleus central control system. The yard can be monitored from central control, and the mainline can be monitored from the yard. This enhances communication between rail traffic control personnel and yard control personnel, and provides the framework for control redundancy in the event of emergency.

Train control, traction power, alarms, and other interfaces require the same operations for yard control and mainline control, making Nucleus incredibly user friendly for all control personnel. Train car numbers are logged when entering or exiting the yard, and displayed on storage or maintenance tracks while trains are out of service (shown at left). Yard control personnel can seamlessly keep record of all car locations using this tracking technology.

The Yard control system includes dual 70” monitor overview display and a dual monitor workstation. Additionally, the yard serves as a third point of redundancy for the control system, and in the event of extreme emergency at central control, the yard system is capable of controlling the entire mainline.

Nucleus Traction Power Control

Traction power displays show the circuitry of third-rail power throughout the yard and mainline. Breakers can be opened or closed by control personnel, and in the event of an emergency, power can be removed from a third rail in two clicks of a mouse (right). These displays additionally show the location of power rails relative to station platform locations, and rail connections to neighboring stations.

Locations with updated switchgear report voltage and amperage, which Nucleus displays on traction power screens. Clear color coding indicates the energized (red), de-energized (green), emergency tripped (magenta), or offline (gray) states of rails and switchgear.

Switchgear selected will trigger a control command window shown below. Users with traction power access privileges can control switchgear remotely from central control using the commands available in the control command window.

Breakers and rails in an emergency tripped state are displayed in magenta (above). For enhanced safety, emergency trip resets can be performed from central control once field personnel has cleared the emergency trip trigger at the affected location.

Traction power rails can be displayed on train control screens as well, and reflect the real-time status of the rail. Shown left, red rails are energized and green rails are de-energized. For display simplicity, users can hide power rails on train control screens as desired.

Nucleus Public Address Control

Nucleus includes public address control to deliver audio and visual communications to passengers and other members of the public on platforms and in surrounding station locations. Messages can be created, edited, and scheduled in this interface. Nucleus also supports live message delivery by rail traffic control personnel, transmitted from central control.

Messages can be created in multiple languages, with audio generated either from workstation microphones, from a pre-recorded media file, or using the Nucleus text-to-speech functionality. Visual display signs can be configured in a multitude of available templates for display on both LED or LCD signs.

The schedule of messages and bank of available messages are available on each location’s public address screen. Messages are added to the schedule from the message bank, and can be configured to play in one zone of one location, at some locations, all locations, or any combination thereof.

Messages are assigned priority levels upon creation. Preconfigured train arrival announcements will interrupt most non-emergency scheduled message in the event of conflict, preventing passengers from missing any arriving trains. Live messages from rail traffic control personnel will interrupt any conflicting message, ensuring rail traffic control personnel can reach passengers at any location at any time.

Nucleus Alarms and Tabular Displays

Alarms are displayed in Nucleus in a filterable list according to priority and date of activation (right). Alarms are color coded according to active status, priority, and type.

Acknowledged alarms are stamped with the date and time of their acknowledgement. Any active alarm, regardless of acknowledgement, will appear in the alarms display as long as the condition triggering the alarm persists. Most alarms require both acknowledgement and a cleared field condition to disappear from the alarms list, ensuring that maintenance personnel are made aware of any unsafe or otherwise atypical field condition.

The IO tabular interface displays every indication and control point in the system with its instantaneous trigger status. Users can monitor specific indication changes within this interface. Indication and control database configuration information is shown in this display as well.

IO tabular provides an incredibly informative environment for system troubleshooting and point testing during system maintenance, expansion, or reconfiguration.

MetroRail Control Triple Redundancy

The system redundancy designed by TSE provides triple redundancy on databases and all servers. The system includes both automatic and manual failover options. Automatic failover operations are dictated by a TSE server application called the System Monitor, which monitors all applications and databases in the network to ensure each piece is online and in control at all times.

The control center houses the primary servers and database, as well as one level of redundant servers and the first standby database. An additional redundant database and server bank are housed at the maintenance and operations facility—this is known as the disaster recovery. In the event of emergency in the control center, the entire system can be run from the maintenance and operations facility.
