Former Hornet Garin Higgins completed his eighth season at his alma mater and ranks fourth in wins behind Emporia State legends Fran Welch, Larry Kramer and Bill Hargis. In 2013 he led the Hornets to their first NCAA Playoff appearance since 2003. He has an 93-56 record in 13 years as a head coach with a 23-11 record over his last three years. He was named the 21st head football coach at Emporia State on December 15, 2006.

He has built the Hornets the right way over his seven seasons and orchestrated one of the great turnarounds in Emporia State history. The Hornets have gone 23-11 over the last three years after going 19-36 in his first five seasons. The 19 wins in back to back seasons were the most since the Hornets went 19-5 in 1988-89, while Higgins was a quarterback for Emporia State.

Higgins took the Hornets to just their second NCAA Playoff appearance in 2013 with a balance of seniors and underclassmen. Only eight of the 20 Hornets that earned All-MIAA honors were seniors in 2013. Emporia State was ranked in the top 20 in the nation in scoring offense, total offense, passing efficincy, completion percentage, red zone offense, turnover margin, and interceptions.

The success on the field the last two years has translated into the stands as well. Emporia State has averaged over 5,000 fans per game over the last three years. The Hornets averaged 6,009 fans per game to rank 19th in NCAA Division II in 2013.

The Hornets had one of the best turnarounds in the country in 2012. They improved by five wins over the previous year’s 5-6 record and finished in second place in the rugged MIAA. Higgins offense set several school records in 2012 as the Hornets racked up ten wins for the first time since 1989, when Higgins was suited up as quarterback.

He led the Hornets to within one game of a post season berth in both 2010 and 2011 before 2012’s break through season. He has helped establish a true home field advantage for Emporia State, with the Hornets winning at least four home games in four of the last five seasons.

Higgins compiled a 51-9 record (.857) as the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University before becoming the co-offensive coordinator at NCAA Division II member Minnesota State in 2005.

Prior to returning to ESU he was the offensive coordinator at Northeastern State University of the Lone Star Conference in the 2006 season. Northeastern State was 3-2 in the Lone Star, their first winning conference record since 2000.

While the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State, the Rangers qualified for the NAIA playoffs five consecutive seasons, had three national title game appearances and Higgins was named the Central State Football League Coach of the Year five straight years from 2000 through 2004. He also led the Rangers to five CSFL titles during that span. Higgins’s offense rolled up over 42 points per game from 1999-2003 and his rushing offense led the nation in 1999 and 2000. The Rangers won 31 consecutive games from Oct. 1998 through December 2000 and were 15-3 against NCAA Division II schools under Higgins. His .857 winning percentage is the highest in NWOSU history.

Higgins has coached three players that have gone on to play in the NFL regular season - Lynn Scott with the Dallas Cowboys, Sam Breeden with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboy Patrick Crayton. Two former Hornets - Adam Schiltz with the Kansas City Chiefs and Austin Willis with the Oakland Raiders - are in NFL training camps this year while Harold Ayodele was in camp with the Chiefs in 2011.

“Emporia State can and will compete for conference championships in football,” said Higgins. “And the MIAA is hands down the best conference in the nation.”

A native of Blackwell, Okla. where he was an all-state quarterback, Higgins earned his undergraduate degree at Emporia State in 1992. He was a four-year letterman for the Hornets and helped lead the team to a national runner-up finish in 1989. He has been involved with four teams that have played for or won national championships as a player, coordinator or head coach.

“Emporia State provided me a wonderful experience as a student-athlete and I hope to do the same for my players,” said Higgins. “We are going to recruit kids that want to come to ESU and represent this university well on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”

Higgins and his wife Heather, a 1995 graduate of ESU, are the parents of three children - son Halen and daughters Harlee and Gracyn.

After finishing second in teh MIAA for two years then dropping back last season, what do you have to do to get back to that level? It is a must that we handle adversity better, especially when it hits early in the season. We have to play the next game and keep our past performances in the past. We let last year’s game by game results have an impact on our play. If we can play with our “Hornet Edge” in each game for four quarters we will have a chance.

You’ve averaged seven wins a season over the last four years after winning 14 games in your first four years, has this success changed any of the goals of your program and if so how?Our goals have never actually changed since we’ve gotten here. I do think we are now a legitimate top 15-20 team in the country and can consistently compete for an MIAA Championship. I feel if you can win the conference championship, and as history has indi-cated, you legitimately have a shot to win the national title. We’ve always wanted to do that and those have always been our goals but now realistically we have increased out talent level to where we truly have that opportunity. Our players are holding other players accountable and we have a certain standard that our players are striving to meet each and every day.

What most excites you about this season?First we do have a lot of returning starters especially back on of-fense. We have a returning starter at quarterback, actually three guys that have started and won a game in the MIAA. I think experi-ence is very necessary at that position in order to compete in the MIAA. Our players understand what winning is about. We do have experience in the playoffs. I think our players truly believe we have a chance to win the MIAA Championship.

Talk about how tough the MIAA is with five different schools making the NCAA Playoffs in the last four

years with four other teams playing in bowl games in that time. The MIAA is the toughest Division II conference in the country. A lot of people say it but I do believe we are the SEC of Division II. That being said, the importance of playing clean and disciplined football every Saturday is a must if you want to have a chance at post season. With at least two games scheduled this year, since the MIAA began their TV schedule in 2010 the Hornets will have 11 appearances. What are your thoughts on the MIAA TV?It’s great exposure not only for our conference, but also for our university as I believe we have an outstanding institution here at Emporia State. We haven’t always fared to well in the MIAA TV games but at the same time we are able to market our program and I think that’s exciting. Being able to play on TV and being nationally ranked has been huge for us in recruiting.

How do you want the typical Hornet football player to be perceived?A player that has a strong work ethic, is concerned about his teammates and is mentally and physically tough. We want our players to have the right type of character and accountability off the field, be proud of their university and proud to be a Hornet.

When a player graduates from you program, what do you want them to remember from it?I definitely want our player to have the same type of experience that I did as a student athlete at ESU. We want to be proud not only of our football program but of this great institution. We want them leaving here with a sense of pride that their alma mater is Emporia State University. We want them to be leaders in their communities and be a positive impact in everything they want to do in life.

First the bad news for Emporia State last year. The Hornets missed 54 com-bined games from players expected to be on the two deep at the beginning of the year. The two players Emporia State took to the 2014 MIAA Media Day, quarterback Brent Wilson and linebacker Tariq Allen, combined to play in just five games for the Hornets last season. The good news is the Hornets were able to give extensive playing time to sev-eral players to bolster their depth coming into this season. Nowhere is that depth more obvious than at the quarterback position. Emporia State will return three players that have started and won MIAA games. The three-some of Brent Wilson, Ty Reasnor and Braxton Marstall all posted wins last year in games where they threw for at least 196 yards while completing at least 60% of at least 30 throws with multiple touchdown passes and one or fewer interceptions. Last year the rest of the MIAA combined to have just wins to meet that standard, both by graduated Harlon Hill candidate Anthony Abenoja of Pittsburg State. Wilson was one of the Hornets hit by injury. In the first four games he aver-aged 320.0 yards per game with a 60.6% completion rate and ten touchdowns. He was injured in the fourth quarter of the Hornets 42-35 double overtime win at Northeastern State. He finished the game, tossing a game tying touchdown in the first OT and scoring the game winner on a rush in the second extra period.

As a sophomore he was 220 for 320 for 2,985 passing yards with 33 touch-downs and just six interceptions and added 396 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He earned second-team All-MIAA and third-team All-Region honors in 2013 as he led the Hornets to the playoffs. Reasnor took over the starting role against Lindenwood and was 30 of 37 for 196 yards and three touchdowns in the Hornets 37-22 win. He threw for a career high 258 yards with four touchdowns on 29-49 passing in a 42-40 loss at Neb.-Kearney. Marstall got the starting nod at Missouri Western after subbing in for an injured Reasnor against Ft. Hays State. Against the Tigers, Marstall led the Hornets to 21 second half points as he was 10 for 19 for 102 yards after the break. In his first start the following week at Missouri Western, Marstall led the Hornets to a 30-10 vic-tory. He was 24 of 38 for 233 yards and two touchdowns as he became the third Hornet quarterback of the season to get a victory in a start. Wilson returned from his injury to participate in spring football and is the leader for the starting position going into fall camp. One of the reasons for the success of the quarterbacks has been a great group of receivers. Although Austin Willis is now in training camp with the Oakland Raiders, Emporia State returns six players that had at least ten catches last season and four that scored a touchdown.

Kavaski Ervin was the leading receiver for the Hornets last season with 64 catch-es for 623 yards and five touchdowns. Mitchell Foote had 35 receptions for 378 yards in ten games with four touchdowns while Drake Smithton pulled in 27 catches for 239 yards. Justin Brown had four touchdowns in his 14 catches including a career high six catches for 77 yards with three TDs at Neb.-Kearney. Tight end Reese Richards averaged 15.0 yards per catch on 14 receptions before an injury at Missouri Western forced him to miss the final three games. Antonio Brown, the 2013 MIAA Offensive Freshman of the Year, leads the running back. He gained 680 yards with six touchdowns last season, includ-ing a season high 134 yards on 20 carries at Pittsburg State. Kai Callins had a solid freshman year last season, but is expect-ed to miss this year with an injury. Landon Nault, the Oklahoma Offensive Player of the Year as a senior at Kingfisher HS, should challenge for carries as well. The Hornets lost three starters to graduation on the offensive line, but are anchored by two-time All-MIAA pick Jarrett Stastny at guard. Eric Pruitt start-ed nine of 11 games at guard and moved to center for two games due to an injury to starter Daniel Goodman. Jordan McAdoo has played four of the five line spots in his career with ten starts in his career. Gerron Anthony was a projected starter last season before suffering a broken arm when a car fell on him right before camp.

Brent Wilson and Jarrett Stastny have both been named to Preseason All-America watch lists this season.

Kavaski Ervin was a second-team All-MIAA receiver for the Hornets last season.

Antonio Brown has 1,216 yards and 15 touch-downs in his first two years with Emporia State.

The Hornet defense ranked fourth in the MIAA with 15 interceptions and were sixth in average yards per rush, but ranked tenth in the league in pass defense effi-ciency. Jason Tetuan is the leading returning tackler for Emporia State after earning honorable mention All-MIAA honors last season. He had 73 tackles last season, reaching double digits against both Central Missouri and Missouri Western. Josh Monteagudo will be playing more of a line-backer position this year after seeing most of his action at safety over the last two years. Remington Whitley is next leading returning tackler among linebackers for the Hornets with 15 last season. Eddie Vinson was an honorable men-tion All-MIAA performer on the defensive line last season. He had 53 tackles with six tackles for loss including three sacks last year. James Junious had 2.5 sacks among his 3.0 tackles for loss with a forced fumble. He had a sack and strip forced fumble against Northwest Missouri. Donovan Walker was right behind Junios in total tackles last season with 25, including a career high six stops against Washburn. Dominique Jones moved to the defensive line midway through last season after starting the year at tight end. The Hornets will return players respon-sible for three of their 15 interceptions last year. A pair of track athletes had two of them. A.J. West had five pass break ups to go with his one interception. He earned All-American honors as part of the Hornets

4x100m relay in 2014. Tre Dickerson had a pick in Emporia State’s double overtime win at Northeastern State last season and then earned a provisional NCAA qualifying mark in the triple jump in the spring. Ace Mayze had ten starts at corner last season as well. The kicking and deep snapping duties were in the hands and feet of freshmen last year and they are all back this season. Austin Morton was 35 of 38 on PAT’s and went ten of 13 on field goals last season for the Hornets. He was the top scoring freshman kicker in the MIAA last season. His ten field goals rank sixth on the Emporia State single season list and he is one of just five Hornets to connect on ten in a single season. Justin Marcha handled the kick-offs and punting for Emporia State last season. He averaged 56.2 yards on 49 kick-offs with nine touchbacks and had a 36.7 yard average on 46 punts. Ty Reasnor also did some punting and averaged 37.9 yards on 24 punts. Reid Buckingham was the deep snap-per all season last year and is back for his sophomore year. With the graduation of All-MIAA returners Lyndell Johnson and Deveon Dinwiddie, the Hornets will have some-one new fielding kicks this season. Justin Brown had six kick returns and one punt return last season. Mitchell Foote is the only other Hornet coming back that fielded a punt last season, returning two for a total of five yards.

For the first time in four years the Hornets will play host to six home games on Jones Field at Welch Stadium. The Hornets plan to unveil the Dennis Shogren Videoboard on September 10 when they play host to Central Missouri in the first of two televised games for Emporia State this year. The Hornets return to Welch Stadium on September 26 for a Traditions match-up with Northeastern State. Emporia State will travel to St. Charles, Mo. on October 3 for their second televi-sion game, this time against Lindenwood. The fifth most played rivalry in Division II will return to Welch Stadium on October 10 as the Hornets take on the Gorillas for the 94th time. This is the first time Pittsburg State has traveled to Emporia since a 17-14 Emporia State win in 2010. The Hornets will celebrate 25 years in the MIAA when Missouri Western comes to town on October 24 for Emporia State’s Homecoming game. The Hornets have won the last two years against the Griffons but the two have not played in Welch Stadium since a top 15 match-up on a Thursday night TV game in 2012. The 111th edition of the Turnpike Tussle could be scary when Emporia State takes on Washburn on Halloween in Welch Stadium. The Hornets lead the most played active series in Division II his-tory with a 53-52-6 overall advantage. The Hornets will end the regular season on November 14 against Neb.-Kearney on Senior Day at Welch Stadium.

Josh Monteagudo (33) had 52 tackles as a safety last year, including a key interception at Missouri Western.

Eddie Vinson had 6.0 tackles for loss as a sophomore for the Hornets last season.

Austin Morton hit ten field goals as a fresh-man lasat season to rank sixth on the Emporia State single season list.
