Savoia iau alungat pe otomani in 1716, oferS imaginea celui mai interesant ansamblu baroc

din secolul al XVlll-lea din Romenia. llustrativb in acest sens este vechea Hauptplatz (Piala

Principal6), azi Piala Unirii, dominaU de Palatul Baroc (l754), care g;zduiette l'4uzeul de Art;,

Domul romano catolic (1736 1774), opera arhitectului Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach,

unul dintre reprezentanlii de marcd ai ba rocu lui vienez, ti complexul Episcopiei SerbeSti.

Al doilea pol al oraSului este Piala Victoriei (fosta PiaI; a operei), de unde au inceput

mitc;rile de protest din decembrie 1989lare au dus la r;sturnarea regimului comunist din

Romania. Este delimitat6, la nord, de cl;direa Operei, iar la sud, de Catedrala Mitropolitan6.

Promenada de pe partea dreaptd care pornette de la Oper; ti ajunge la Catedrala se

numegte Corso, iar cea de pe stanga Surogat. Prima era locul favorit de plimbare al

aristocra!iei, pe c;nd cealaltd era rezervat6 muncitorilor titinerilot Corso este m;rginit de

Palatul Dauerbach, Palatul 526chen, Palatul Camerei de comer! ti Palatul Weiss S;ndor.

Ele sunt in mare parte rezultatul principiilor de planificare urbanb ale lui Ldszl6 Szdkely

(1877 1934), care in 1908, la varsta de doar 31 de ani, a devenit primul arhitect-tef al

oratului. Grafie lui,Timijoara gi-a cattigat un loc de cinste pe harta mondial: a arhitecturii

Art Nouveau 5i Sece5sion.

Aproximativ la mtlocul d istanlei dintre Piala Unirii ti PialaVictorieistb Piala LibertA_tii, care are

1n centru statuia Sf. loan de Nepomuk (1756), cea mai veche sculpturA baroc; din Timitoara.

Este fosta Paradeplatz, unde se organizau paradele militare. Pe falada vechii Prim;rii din

piald a su pravieluit o inscriplie in lim ba tu rco osma n;, cu ca ractere a ra be, care provine de la

fosta cetate otoman;, din vremea cand Timitoara a fost retedinli de paga16c.

Take a close look at the old neighbourhoods of Fabric and losefin, set outside the .ity walls. Fabicwas the centte ofthe manufactutes and the factoies, of the guilds and the croftsmen. However, its

cuffent appearance is the result of the

urban planning projects which took

ploce between 1880 and 1910, that

transformed it into an Art Nouveau

and Secession architecture sanctuaty.

The same story applies to losefin - the

histoical neighbourhood developed

South of the Citodel, beyond Bego, on

the siteof some fomer allotted qordens.

ln 1773 it was renamed in honour ofJoseph the 2nd - MariqThercsa's son -who visited Timisoarc on numercus

occaSions.
