Sacrament of Marriage: Register at least 6 months in advance; must be a registered member drop by the office and fill out form and be ready to meet the pastor; Pick up wedding information check-list. Quinceañera Celebrations: The family must be registered in the parish for a period of three (3) months prior to the date of the first preparation session. The candidate should register for her/his Quince Años ceremony on or before her/his 14th birthday . The candidate must have been baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and must have received First Eucharist prior to the time of the ceremony. If the honoree has not received the Sacrament of Communion, she/he should be enrolled to prepare to receive the sacrament before the Quince Años ceremony. Queridos amigos de St. Dominic, Este domingo es el último domingo del año litúrgico de la Iglesia. En este domingo celebramos la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Cada año reservamos este domingo para reflexionar sobre este título que le hemos dado a Jesús. En el Leccionario Ciclo C, leemos una parte de la pasión del Evangelio de Juan, que también forma parte de la lectura del Evangelio que se proclama cada año el Viernes Santo. En el evangelio de Juan, Pilato se muestra en una luz más favorable que en los otros evangelios. En la lectura de hoy, escuchamos uno de dos diálogos entre Jesús y Pilato que se relatan en el Evangelio de Juan. Pilato interroga a Jesús sobre los cargos que se le imputan. Caifás y los sumos sacerdotes han acusado a Jesús de un crimen político, uno que requeriría un castigo de muerte. Pilato se distancia de los líderes judíos que acusan Jesús; no es judío, y parece que no quiere tener mucho que ver con este asunto judío. En sus respuestas a las preguntas de Pilato, Jesús distingue su reino de los poderes políticos de este mundo. Dear Friends of St. Dominic This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year. On this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. Each year we set aside this Sunday to reflect upon this title that we have given to Jesus. In Lectionary Cycle C, we read a portion of the passion from the Gospel of John, which is also part of the Gospel reading proclaimed each year on Good Friday. In John’s Gospel, Pilate is shown in a more favorable light than in the other Gospels. In today’s reading, we hear one of two dialogues between Jesus and Pilate that are reported in John’s Gospel. Pilate questions Jesus about the charges brought against him. Caiaphas and the high priests have charged Jesus with a political crime, one that would require a punishment of death. Pilate distances himself from the Jewish leaders who accuse Jesus; he is not a Jew, and he seems to want little to do with this Jewish affair. In his responses to Pilate’s questions, Jesus distinguishes his kingdom from the political powers of this world. King and kingdom may be appropriate terms for Jesus’ mission and promise, but only by analogy. Jesus is king, but not the kind of king we imagine or expect. He was certainly not the kind of king Pilate feared he might be. Jesus refers to a kingdom that does not belong to this world. This has been mentioned earlier in John’s Gospel. Recall that in his prayer during the Last Supper discourse (see John 17:6-18), Jesus prayed for his disciples who are in the world but do not belong to the world. Yet like Jesus, they are sent into the world for the world’s salvation. In today’s reading, we see Jesus identify the final proof that his kingdom is not of this world: If his kingdom were of this world, then there would be people fighting to save him. Again we hear echoes of John’s theme—salvation is worked out through a cosmic battle. It is helpful to return to the first chapter of John’s Gospel to understand the context for Jesus’ words to Pilate. Jesus came into the world, but the world did not know him. In John’s language, the world prefers the darkness, and yet the light will not be overcome by the darkness. Truth has been another important theme in John’s Gospel. We see it emphasized in the conclusion of the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. Those who know the truth will recognize Jesus as king and will know how to interpret this insight. Yet Jesus’ kingship was hidden from many of his contemporaries. Only those chosen, those who have the eyes of faith, are able to see. As modern disciples of Jesus, we also struggle at times to recognize Jesus as king. Today’s Gospel invites us to see with eyes of faith that we might recognize that Jesus, through his crucifixion and death, is indeed king and Savior of all.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — One like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship (Daniel 7:13-14). Psalm — The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty (Psalm 93). Second Reading — Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5-8). Gospel — For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37).

Primera lectura — Uno como un Hijo del hombre recibió dominio, gloria y realeza (Daniel 7:13-14). Salmo —Señor, tu eres nuestro rey (Salmo 93 [92]). Segunda lectura — Jesucristo es el testigo fiel, el primogénito de entre los muertos (Apocalipsis 1:5-8). Evangelio — Por esto vine al mundo, para testificar de la verdad (Juan 18:33b-37).

CHRIST, THE KING The selection from the book of Daniel presented in today’s first reading was part of an attempt to weave a vision of ultimate success for the Jews under persecution. Exactly whom the author had in mind when he refers to “one like a Son of Man” is hotly disputed by scholars today. The fact is, we simply do not know if the author meant anyone in particular or if this is a collective, figurative image of Israel’s triumph. What we do know is that the early Christian community seized upon this passage and recognized it as a messianic prophecy, a foretelling of the ultimate triumph of Jesus as the Christ of God. The Lectionary’s juxtaposition of this text with today’s Gospel narrative of Jesus before Pilate is a wonderful example of how the liturgy “layers” passages with new meaning by inserting them in a particular context. The celebration of Christ the King allows us to hear these passages with a new depth of meaning in light of our contemporary understanding of how, in Jesus and his resurrection and ascension, we have seen the fulfillment of Daniel’s vision of ultimate deliverance. The veiled admission of Jesus before Pilate that he did indeed have a kingdom “not here” takes on new meaning against the cosmic vision of Daniel, who allows us to glimpse the “Ancient One” on his heavenly throne.

CRISTO REY La selección del libro de Daniel para la primera lectura de hoy forma parte de un intento de tejer una visión del éxito final de los judíos perseguidos. Exactamente qué tenía el autor en mente cuando se refiere a “uno semejante a un Hijo de hombre” es muy disputado por los eruditos de hoy. El hecho es que, simplemente, no sabemos si el autor quiso decir a alguien en particular o si se trata de una imagen colectiva, figurativa del triunfo de Israel. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. It is likely that when we think of a king, the image that comes to mind is of pomp, ceremony, and civic authority. Jesus is a king like no other. He is not bound by the constraints of time or place. His authority is everlasting. He is the one “who is and who was and who is to come.” Jesus does not rule as earthly kings govern. Jesus reigns in humble obedience to the will of God the Father and calls us to do the same. It is by following the truth of Christ’s command and listening to his voice of love that we are made into a kingdom, serving the One whose dominion is everlasting.

BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST In the waters of Baptism, we were drawn into Christ, who is priest, prophet, and king and called to be “alter Christus,” “other Christs.” Christ who is priest sanctifies the everyday stuff of life, building a bridge between God and humanity. Christ who is prophet proclaims God’s love and mercy in a world that desperately needs it. Christ who is king rules the universe in loving, sacrificial service. We who are baptized into Christ are called to bring God’s love into our hearts, homes, places of work, and the wider world. We are called to show and share God’s love to others, especially those who most need the care, compassion, and forgiveness that is at the heart of Christ’s eternal message. We are called to give of ourselves beyond what might seem reasonable, in imitation of our Lord and king who gave himself on the cross and who reigns forever.

CALLED TO LISTEN AND SERVE Jesus said to Pilate, “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Jesus spoke to the disciples and his voice reaches through the ages in the words of sacred scripture and the tradition of the Church. In prayer, participation in the liturgy, and learning from the saints and the teachings of the Church, we grow in belonging to the truth of Christ’s love. We hear and follow Jesus’ command to wash others’ feet, to love as he loves, to serve as he serves. And while it is certainly our duty to do so, there is more to our service than merely fulfilling the instructions of another. We fulfill Christ’s command as a grateful response to the incredible love of God for us. How will you listen to and serve the Lord? How will you make Jesus the king of your heart and life? Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo Rey, o Cristo Rey. Es probable que cuando pensamos en un rey, la imagen que nos viene a la mente es la de la pompa, la ceremonia y la autoridad cívica. Jesús es un rey como ningún otro. No está sujeto a las limitaciones de tiempo o lugar. Su autoridad es eterna. Él es “el que es y el que era y el que ha de venir”. Jesús no gobierna como los reyes terrenales. Jesús reina en humilde obediencia a la voluntad de Dios Padre y nos llama a hacer lo mismo. Siguiendo la verdad del mandato de Cristo y escuchando su voz de amor nos convertimos en un reino, sirviendo a Aquel cuyo domino es eterno.

BAUTIZADOS EN CRISTO En las aguas del Bautismo, fuimos atraídos por Cristo, que es sacerdote, profeta y rey, y llamados a ser “alter Christus”, “otros Cristos”. Cristo que es sacerdote santifica las cosas cotidianas de la vida, construyendo un puente entre Dios y la humanidad. El Cristo profeta proclama el amor y la misericordia de Dios en un mundo que lo necesita desesperadamente. Cristo, que es rey, gobierna el universo en un servicio amoroso y sacrificado. Los bautizados en Cristo estamos llamados a llevar el amor de Dios a nuestros corazones, hogares, lugares de trabajo y al mundo en general. Estamos llamados a mostrar y compartir el amor de Dios con los demás, especialmente con aquellos que más necesitan el cuidado, la compasión y el perdón que están en el corazón del mensaje eterno de Cristo. Estamos llamados a dar de nosotros mismos más allá de lo que pueda parecer razonable, a imitación de nuestro Señor y Rey que se entregó en la cruz y que reina para siempre.

LLAMADOS A ESCUCHAR Y SERVIR Jesús le dijo a Pilato: “Todo el que pertenece a la verdad escucha mi voz”. Jesús habló a los discípulos y su voz llega a través de los tiempos en las palabras de la Sagrada Escritura y la tradición de la Iglesia. En la oración, la participación en la liturgia y el aprendizaje de los santos y las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, crecemos en la pertenencia a la verdad del amor de Cristo. Escuchamos y seguimos el mandato de Jesús de lavar los pies a los demás, de amar como él ama, de servir como él sirve. Y aunque ciertamente es nuestro deber hacerlo, hay algo más en nuestro servicio que el mero cumplimiento de las instrucciones de otro. Cumplimos el mandato de Cristo como una respuesta agradecida al increíble amor de Dios por nosotros. ¿Cómo vas a escuchar y servir al Señor? ¿Cómo harás que Jesús sea el rey de tu corazón y de tu vida?
