I encourage you to support our PTSA through participation andmembership. Your membership is vital to our organization and financially sup-ports its programs and advocacy. A membership form is included in this news-letter ( refer to page 9 of this Courier edition. Membership is also availableonline through our website at www.mhs-ptsa.org.

This year the PTSA will be utilizing a new site calledwww.payforschoolstuffonline.com. Through this website, parents will have theopportunity to use a credit card for payment of PTSA membership, and partici-pate in other fundraisers and programs throughout the school year. Once on thesite, parents must create an account and register with the appropriate school.The site will allow you to print a receipt for any item purchased and receipts forPTSA donations may be used for tax purposes. BOOSTER CLUB/SPIRITWEAR 14-15

I am pleased to welcome everyone back for the 2010-11 school year. We are look-ing forward to a very positive and productive school year.

We extend a warm welcome to students of the class of 2014 joining us after suc-cessful years at Redland, Shady Grove, and Roberto Clemente Middle Schools.Our newest students join a great group of students who have worked hard to excelin the classroom and in numerous extracurricular activities in the previous schoolyear. The enthusiasm, talent, and interests of students in the freshman class will

allow them to make a significant contribution to our school community. The fresh-man class brings our enrollment to 1,838 students.

In addition to our new students, we are joined by a number of new staff memberswho share the dedication and commitment of our returning staff. Our staff mem-bers worked very hard this summer in order to prepare for this school year. Ourleadership teamwith the help of a number of students and parentsgeneratedgoals and objectives that will serve as the foundation of our 2010-2011 School Im-provement Plan (SIP) from June 22nd June 24th. This plan will serve as a blue-print for success this school year. The primary focus is to continue to improve theacademic achievement of all students by maintaining a rigorous instructional pro-gram. We realize that none of this is possible without a climate where respect for

everyone is a priority. (Continued on Page 2)

Currently membership and the 1st Annual Colonel Classic are available on the site, but we hope to expand its useas the year progresses.

This spring the Every Fifteen Minute Program (EFM) will be returning to Magruder. EFM is a national driverawareness program designed for high school Juniors and Seniors. Its name refers to the statistic from when theprogram was founded 20 years ago, that someone dies from an alcohol-related collision every fifteen minutes.The program occurs over two days and include an reenactment of drinking related car crash and the after-math.EFM will sponsor programs and provide information on this and related topics during the school year leading up

to the spring event. Additional information is available in this issue of the Courier and on our website.

I would like to thank the many local businesses and families that have supported our PTSA by placing adver-tisements in our directory or sponsoring the golf tournament. I encourage parents to support these businesseswhich support our school. You may find a listing of these businesses on our website.

The PTSA and I look forward to a productive and successful school year. I am eager to hear from parents andwelcome your comments and suggestions as we advocate for our children during this year. PTSA meetings areheld at 7:30 p.m. in the Media Center on the third Tuesday of the month and all are welcome.

This year, we are placing a significant emphasis on the concept of respect. We believe that, with themany social changes presenting numerous challenges, respect is a vital component to the success of our

efforts as an academic institution. In recent years, maintaining a climate that is conducive to teachingand learning has been impacted by a social atmosphere where there is a growing disregard for this fun-damental principle. Our efforts will center on recognition and reinforcement of acts of kindness andrespect. We will take greater steps to recognize the accomplishments of students and staff, as well asthe contributions of our parent community in support of this effort. This much needed focus on respectand recognizing positive contributions to our school community will serve as the building blocks forour future.

As we focus our energy to meet the challenges of a new year, we welcome the support of our parentcommunity. Research continues to show that parent involvement and effective partnerships with theschool staff are keys to student success. Our parents have provided us with outstanding support and

have made many contributions to our work as educators. We encourage the participation of all parentsas we move forward to provide a safe environment that is conducive to teaching and learning.

In closing, I offer this quote in support of our work as partners on behalf of all students in our schoolcommunity:

Dear Parents:

It has come to our attention that buses are having problems droppingoff students in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon,

because vehicles are blocking the path of the bus. Many parents arepassing buses that have their flashing lights on and stop signs out.This is a violation of county and state laws. As a result, bus drivers can not safely and appropriatelyperform their intended duties. Therefore, we are asking for your cooperation. Please do not drop offand pick up students between the hours of 6:40 am to 7:15 am, and 1:45 pm to 2:30pm in the front en-trance of the school. These hours are in effect Monday through Friday. We ask that during these re-stricted hours, students be dropped off and picked up from the stadium side entrance. Having the sup-port of the entire Magruder community, we will greatly increase the safety of our students and the effi-ciency of our busing system. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

National Honors Society By: Suzi Boyle

The National Honor Society held its first meeting of this school year on Wednesday,September 15 in Mrs. Boyle's room B114. NHS meets the third Wednesday of everymonth. Packets are currently available for Senior Fall Induction. The packets can bepicked up from Mrs. Boyle or in Guidance. The completed applications are due backon Friday, September 24, by 2:30 PM. The Fall Induction will take place at the NHSOctober meeting in the cafeteria on Wednesday, October 20 @ 2:20 P.M.

The Magruder Child and Adolescent Development classes are already preparing for the first days ofMagruder Preschool. The High School students are planning age appropriate curriculum activities for

the preschoolers who will be attending our program that begins in October. Both our AM and PM Pre-school sessions are full for this school year. Mrs. Suzi Boyle appreciates the support from the commu-nity parents who send their children to the Magruder Preschool program. Many of the high school stu-dents enrolled in the class would like to pursue a teaching career. This Child Development class pro-vides enriching, hands-on opportunities for students to experience first- hand what it's like to be ateacher and make a difference in a young child's life.

One of the most important ingredients to establishing a school climate that isconducive to teaching and learning is the concept of community respect.This involves respecting the rights of everyone at all times. Unfortunately,over time, the idea of respect has eroded as a major building block for theestablishment of strong communities and institutions that serve these commu-nities. This has impacted in many ways the climate at Magruder HighSchool. Frequent complaints about inappropriate language, disrespectful be-havior, unfair treatment, and general lack of courtesy are becoming all toocommon. While the vast majority of members of the Magruder High Schoolfamily demonstrate the highest levels of respect daily, for many there is stillsomething left to do.

In response to this need, creating a climate of respect in a community of car-ing, is a high priority for the upcoming school year. Our focus will be on emphasizing the importanceof respecting the rights of others at all times and reinforcing the role of respect in accomplishing ourmission as an academic institution.

We will continue to emphasize that respect is bestowed from one person to another or group of peopleas a means of showing honor or high esteem for that person or group. Respect should be shown tonon-living things as well as living things. As previously mentioned, Magruder High School itself hasbeen disrespected. Instead of finding ways to disrespect one another, we must find ways to build oneanother up and celebrate our accomplishments and differences. We must respect one another and ourwork environment if we are to make Magruder High School a place all can be proud of and a top

school in the county. There is much work to do in the upcoming school year and the challenges thatwe face will only be met by working together and respecting one another.

Please remember that when one person disrespects another person, they ultimately disrespect them-selves. If people thought more highly of themselves, perhaps they would not find it acceptable to dis-respect others. We must learn to respect ourselves so that in turn we can respect others and the envi-ronments around us. If one wishes to be respected they must also show it. Respect is not freely givento someone, but it must be earned by displaying respect. We are not always going to like everyone orthe situations presented to us, but we must show respect in order to accomplish great things. As thegreat Jackie Robinson stated, Im not concerned with your liking or disliking me. . . All I ask is thatyou respect me as a human being.

The expectation for the upcoming school year is that everyone will respect one another and the build-ing. Anything less than this will not be tolerated and is completely unacceptable. Each person at Ma-gruder High School has the right to feel good about what they do and to be free of interactions that dis-play a lack of respect or courtesy.

College Board Testing Accommodation for Studentswith Disabilities By: Anne Goode, School Counselor


A student with a disability, a condition that substantially limits his or her ability to participate in Col-lege Board tests, may be eligible for accommodations. The Student Eligibility Form needs to be sub-mitted for a student requesting accommodations. A student may seek accommodations on the basisof a disability for the SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, Advanced Placement Program Ex-ams, and the PSAT/NMSQT by completing a Student Eligibility Form.Only one form needs to be completed for all exams. It will cover all noted College Board testingprograms for as long as the student's school verifies annually that the eligibility requirements and

Guidelines for Documentation continue to be met. Test scores will not be provided if the accommo-dations are not approved by the College Board prior to the test administration. It is important to notethat completing and submitting a Student Eligibility Form does not guarantee approval by the Col-lege Board for accommodations for their testing programs.Magruder has two SSD Coordinators to assist students and parents with this service. Who wouldnt jump at the chance to reach hundreds of teenagers on making responsible choices asa driver or passenger? And to meet and work with scores of wonderful parents, staff, and community

members who go beyond the extra mile for the sake of our teens? And for free?

I am looking for a Freshman or Sophomore parent to join me as Program Coordinator for our Every15 Minutes 2011 event, to prepare to take the helm for the 2013 event.

What is Every 15 Minutes, anyway?Every 15 Minutes is a national driver awareness program designed for high school Juniors and Sen-iors. Its name comes from the statistic when it was founded over twenty years ago, that someonedied from an alcohol-related collision every fifteen minutes. In 2007, the US DOT reported this fa-tality rate to be one every forty minutes. The decline is believed to be a result, in part, of interactiveprograms such as Every 15 Minutes.

What happens during Every 15 Minutes?The event is held over 2 days, usually close to Prom, because of the high incidence of underagedrinking at that time.Please review details at the official website, http://www.every15minutes.com/enter.html. You canalso enter Every 15 Minutes in the Youtube search box, to see how other schools across the countryhave held this program that reaches teens and saves lives.

Time to brag!The Magruder High School 2009 Every 15 Minutes was stellar because we had awesome studentscommitted to the program, and thanks to shining parents and citizens in the community, parts of our

program are unique in Montgomery County, such as the simulated courtroom scene by Maryland Dis-trict Court Judge Brian Kim.We also included a cross-section of our student body and addressed other dangerous behaviors in-cluding texting, speeding, drowsy driving, and not buckling the seat belt.Our event was also included in the WJLA April 28, 2009 Drive To Stay Alive (link is no longeractive.)Best of all, not only were there NO alcohol-related events at our 2009 Prom, one of our participantsreported attending an after-prom party with friends at a private residence where alcohol was served,and they all left because of what they learned from Every 15 Minutes. These are just some of oursuccess stories!

Welcome Back Magruder Students and Families!

My name is Dawn Trahern and I am the 2010-2011 Facilities Chairperson for Magruder High Schools PTSA. Ihave worked in various positions within the PTA organization at the local levels and have been active with the

Magruder Cluster CIP (Capital Improvement Program) needs.

Magruders Administration was very busy over the summer getting the school ready for our students and staff

and Building Services also worked hard getting the school ready for our students. Thanks to all who worked so

hard to get the year off to a good start.

We have some great news to report. Over the summer, Magruder received 84 new high resolution surveillance

cameras positioned inside the school and an additional 4 cameras were installed outside the building. Also, our

stairwells are now monitored by cameras. This equipment is state of the art and provides our administration and

security staff enhanced monitoring capabilities that allows for superior picture quality, strong zooming capabili-

ties and the system allows for recordings to be saved for review. Research states that increased monitoring of

the school building will serve as a crime deterrent, including theft, vandalism and other nefarious activities.

Please attend the next PTSA meeting to hear more about our new abilities to provide students and staff with in-

creased safety and security.

Another important change this year has been the change to our lunch schedule. After a thorough review of all

the variables, Mr. Evans and his administrative team adjusted the lunch schedule from four (4) grade-level

lunches to three (3) mixed grade lunches. Mr. Evans indicated that grade level lunches were instituted several

years ago and while he fully supported the grade level lunches and worked to keep them in place as long as pos-

sible; the increasing demands on the schools master schedule and the amount of administrative time necessary

to monitor 4 lunches has caused the need for this change. Please be aware that we were the only school in thecounty to run a 4 period lunch. Most schools run a 2 and sometimes 3 period lunches. To accommodate for the

change, a couple of changes were instituted in the cafeteria. For example, all extra lunch tables were removed

from the room and the lost and found was relocated. This helped open up part of the room and reduce the clut-

ter. The posted room capacity for the cafeteria is 800. Tables are arranged in very much the way you would

expect to see traditional school cafeteria setups. There are approximately 520 students in lunches 1 & 2. These

lunches are monitored by 1 Administrator, 1 staff member and 2 members of the security team. Lunch 3 is our

largest lunch with approximately 650 students. This lunch is monitored by 2 Administrators, 2 staff members

and 3 members of the security staff. According to staff, the lunch lines are running smoothly with ample time

for the students to eat. Staff will continue to monitor the lines throughout the year to make sure all students are

provided adequate time to eat lunch. Further, Mr. Evans and other members of the staff described lunches as

running very smoothly and students are adjusting well to the change. Mr. Evans indicated changes can and willbe made as conditions warrant.

Finally, there is something for the students to look forward to in the cafeteria next year. Magruder is approved

to pilot a program through MCPSs food services division where students will have healthier food choices that

are more appealing with greater options. For example, we expect the program to have wonderful salad and

sandwich choices they have even discussed sushi! Stay tuned. We will keep you posted on the progress.

September 2010

SSL is a graduation requirement in the state of Maryland. Understand the SSL plan in MontgomeryCounty Public Schools (MCPS) by contacting the SSL coordinator in any middle or high school and ex-ploring the SSL Web site www.mcpsssl.org.

Service performed during the summer for which SSL hours are desired must be documented on MCPSForm 560-51, Student Service Learning Activity Verificationand turned in to the SSL coordinator by thelast Friday in September (September 24).

All organizations and opportunities for which SSL hours are desired must be preapproved. Check the

list of organizations tagged, Approved SSL MCPS and opportunities tagged, MCPS SSL Approvedat the website www.mcpsssl.org or get MCPS Form 560-50, Request for SSL Preapproval granted inadvance of any involvement.

Students may serve on campaigns of individuals running for public office. MCPS Form 560-50, Re-quest for SSL Preapprovalis required by each student in advance of any service.

The award of SSL hours outside of the instructional day (before school, lunchtime, after school) is oneSSL hour for every hour of service within a 24 hours period. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Students should keep copies of all SSL documents that they turn into the school or community repre-sentatives.

Students may address hunger and homelessness in Montgomery County by preparing bag lunches anddinners in their homes for delivery to homeless facilities. The first meeting of planning the After Prom Party for May, 20ll is Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at

7:00 in Room B111. The theme for the After Prom Party will be decided at this meeting. Please join

us! Many volunteers are needed to make this a safe, fun and memorable evening (early morning!) for

our kids. We would love to have you volunteer your help.

Any monetary donations are tax deductable to you! This event cost about $10,000 to produce and fi-

nancial help from our Magruder families and community is needed. Please sign up below to help or to

make a donation. Thank you!

We are collecting printer cartridges, toner cartridges, and cell phones. There is a collection recycling

box in the main office and in the media center. Thank you!
