On behalf of the Medicine Hat High School Mohawk Football Coaches and players, I would like to welcome you to the 2010 Football Season.
We are looking forward to an exciting season. We have a talented group of returning players, one of whom played in the Canada Cup for the Alberta U18 team. We also welcome the incoming Grade 10 Students, three of whom were chosen to represent Southern Alberta in the Summer Games. Every year, I look forward to utilizing and developing the skills of all of our talented young athletes.
This year, we have the added excitement of a trip to Southern California. Along with the educational component, our trip will greatly enhance our players’ football experience through playing a US High School Football team as well as by attending an NFL Game. I am confident this trip will be one the most memorable highlights of their senior years at Medicine Hat High.
Last year our Mohawk Football team finished second in the Rangeland Football Conference. We hope to improve our standing this year, both in the Rangeland Conference and in Provincial playoffs.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those businesses in the community who help sponsor our team through program ads and other donations. I would also like to thank the parents, fans and MHHS Staff for their tremendous support.
I invite you to come out with family and friends to enjoy another great season of Mohawk Football action!
Sincerely,
Quinn SkeltonHead CoachMedicine Hat High School Mohawks Football

On behalf of the administration, staff, and students of Medicine Hat High School we would like to thank the Mohawk players and coaching staff for their efforts in football throughout the season as well as their positive contribution to the school community. We have a strong football tradition here at Hat High and we encourage our student athletes to pursue their goals with hard work, integrity and dedication. We hope the year brings many successes both on and off the field, and that the experiences from playing on a team will help you with your future endeavors.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Good luck to the team in their league schedule and enjoy your experience this year on your exhibition schedule as you take your talents across the border south to California where you will play Francis Parker High School. We would like thank the staff and students of Francis Parker High School for hosting our program and allowing our student athletes this wonderful opportunity. Best wishes to the Mohawks for a safe and exciting year.
Sincerely,
Boris GrisonichPrincipalMedicine Hat High School
ZONE CHAMPIONS
RUGBY
Well I just finished the book, “Sh*t My Dad Says” written by Justin Halpren and thought to myself, wow I could use some great quotes for this editorial. Not! Oh well no profanity allowed I guess, so I will get right to the point and start out with a little history lesson about the sport of rugby and football.
Rugby was created by a gentlemen named William Webb Ellis in 1823 due to his fine disregard for the rules of football (soccer) as played in his time. He actually decided to pick up the ball and run with it and hence, rugby was created. American football was derived from several divergences of rugby football in the late 19th and early 20th centuries most notably by a man named Walter Camp who is known as the “Father of American Football”. So to put this in perspective, football was created from rugby, rugby was created from soccer and soccer was created by (who cares). If someone told me earlier that 2 of my favourite sports were derived from soccer, I would have called them an idiot.
On a serious note, no matter what sport one enjoys, you need to have many attributes that provide you with the capability to enjoy that sport the way it was meant to be. One needs to bring Attitude, Commitment, and Enthusiasm (ACE). This starts with the players, coaches, trainers, etc in order to be successful. I truly believe in this and the Medicine Hat Mohawks Rugby Club has encouraged players to really embrace this thought. In the last four years, the Rugby Club has made it to the provincials in 3 of those 4 years, winning the bronze medals. You cannot achieve this unless everyone brings ACE to the table. In turn, to continue to be successful in any sport or even anything that one does, you actually have to love what you do and also have fun.
This years bronze medal game was one of the proudest moments of every coach’s goal and that was to see all 25 players bring ACE to the table to prove to themselves that they were the best that they could be. No matter if they were somewhat hurt or if those who were not on the starting lineup, it was fantastic to see those who excelled and committed their bodies for the benefit of their teammates in order to be successful to win. It was probably the best High School Rugby game that I ever witnessed since I have been a coach.
Not only did the players prove themselves, but I also believe the coaching staff did a tremendous job. Quinn Skelton started the rugby program and still continues to commit his time to ensure the success of this program continues. I have known Quinn for a long time and I can ensure everyone he cares about the kids who commit to both the rugby and football programs. Dave Ralston came on board 2 years ago and fellow MHHS Rugby and Football player, Joel Krassman started last year. Between us we strategize and continue to make changes in the game plan which I think proved successful for our trip to the provincials. However, we are only the conductors; the players need to take all the credit for their success and commitment.
On behalf of the MHHS Rugby Club, we invite all football players to come on out in April to try the sport of rugby. In talking with Quinn he has always stated that those who play rugby become better football players. After all both sports are related! In turn, I would like to wish the Mohawks a very successful season this year.
