First of all, I would like to thank all of you who have continued to support and partner with us at Mike HudsonDistributing. Your loyalty and friendship is greatly appreciated. There is still a lot of uncertainty over what the future will bring. Over the next month, I hope we will all have a better understanding of what to expect this summer. One thing we know is that it is a “New World” and it is changing daily. How we respond to this “New Normal” will determine our success.

Over the past month, there have been a number of things that have come across my desk regarding “best practices” not only for distributors, but for owner/operators during these uncertain times. Call them insights or guide-lines, we look at them as a base of knowledge we try to build on. One of our sources for this information is Unipro Foodservice, a nationwide foodservice distribution cooperative of which we are a member. They have put together a composite list of insights for operators, some of which I am sure you are already practicing, but I would still like to share them with you.

Financially-It is not too late!

• If you haven’t applied for a PPP loan, do so now. Work with your bank to see if more funding is expected and what is required. If you have your PPP loan plan to maximize the amount of the loan that will be forgiven. Don’t cut corners! It is a tedious process and make sure everything is documented and ties out financially.

• Leases- Ask your landlord for rent deferral/renegotiations and review equipment leases. If they say no, at least you tried. If you don’t ask, you won’t get.

• Seek payment options/deferrals on utilities.

• Insurance-Can you file a business interruption claim? If you have a reduced workforce, can you reduce your work-er’s comp premiums? Once again, all they can do is say no.

Marketing-Be Seen, Communicate

• Reach out to your consumers. Use your website and social media to promote what precautions you are taking to keep them and your employees safe. Follow CDC guidelines.

• Curbside and takeaway are the new norms. As SIP is relaxed, demonstrate to “your guests” how you are creating a safe environment for them.

o Be accessible to your guests, provide them the options they have to place orders with you. Make ordering easy.

• Make sure your website is up to date. Have current menu, hours and all contact information. Show off that you are a refreshed, clean and safe environment with a cheerful staff.

• You know your customers better than anyone. Evaluate what sells and what doesn’t. Tailor your menu and operation to reflect what customers will appreciate and even demand.

Operations-Deliver an Experience

• Those establishments that are open and offering a good experience will come out of this stronger than those that sit back and do nothing.

• Always run a clean, well-organized place of business.

• Greet, engage, introduce and say good bye to your guests. Make sure your staff is well-trained and happy to be there. You can’t fake excitement or hospitality.

• Everyone is different and will engage in their own way. Be flexible and honest, deliver what you say you can.

• Remember the words of Walt Disney. “People can feel perfection.”
