“Revolution is the festival of the oppressed.” German Greer
There is no dearth of festivals and celebrations in our country. Every now and then there will be
something to celebrate. It could be religious, political, social or just personal celebrations like birthdays.
The mode of celebrations has changed a lot over the decades. A lot of money is spent on these celebra-
tions by way of decorations, entertainment, publicity, food and beverages, etc. When we engage our-
selves in these revelries and luxuries we don’t care a bit about the suffering humanity around us. There
are millions who go hungry, who are in pain and sickness, or are suffering with various other reasons. It
will be a great thing if we could do something to alleviate their pain and suffering, whatever small way
that may be. Only then there will be some meaning to our celebrations. Otherwise it will be just an emp-
ty pomp and show. Kerala has been going through the season of ‘Onam’, the harvest festival celebrated
by all the sections of the people irrespective of caste or creed. It’s a reminder of the once prosperous life
the people supposed to have enjoyed under the legendary king Mahabali who ensured justice and
equality among his subjects. Next time we are into some celebrations, let’s also think of the brethren in
our society who are less fortunate than us.
“Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness,
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” I Corinthians 5;8
