WELCOME.Theodore Roosevelt’s quote, reproduced on the preceding page, is my all-time favourite. Widely regarded as one of the greatest triumphs of rhetoric in history, “The Man in the Arena” is synonymous with the greatest of human achievements. It has inspired many to greatness, not the least of which was Francois Pienaar, who in 1995 was given a copy of the speech by Nelson Mandela before their victorious World Cup grand final against the heavily favoured All Blacks.

As business owners, we are all familiar with Roosevelt’s description of the entrepreneurial struggle. The metaphorical dust, sweat and blood of our daily battles cling to our minds like those which literally coat the body of a warrior or pioneer. Our errors and shortcomings - and we all have them - knock us down again and again, and it is only through

sheer persistence and determination that we see our “great devotions” through to their triumphant end.

Sam is the Founder and Managing Director of McCarthy Global Consulting. His passion is assisting entrepreneurs in navigating the path of building sustainable, profitable businesses. With a talent for crafting innovative business strategy, a deep understanding of financial statements and a knack for analysing and explaining complex business concepts in plain English, Sam is the ideal consulting partner for SME and mid-market businesses.

Sam’s love of business was evident from a young age. He turned his first profit at the age of 13, by teaching himself to build websites and offering his services to clients of his father’s media consultancy.

After finishing high school Sam completed a Bachelor of Business with Distinction from QUT, with a double major in Accountancy and Finance. He was named

on the Dean’s List four times during his studies, and at the conclusion of his studies Sam was awarded the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Prior to starting his own businesses, Sam enjoyed a successful career in finance, holding senior roles in commercial and corporate banking for Westpac before moving into the Chief Financial Officer role for a large steel importer and wholesaler. In this position he was instrumental in helping his employer survive the worst of the GFC, by rapidly reducing expenditure, negotiating favourable treatment with creditors and carefully managing cash flow.

Today Sam provides financial and business advice to some of Australia’s leading up-and-coming brands. In his spare time he enjoys reading, writing and watching his team North Melbourne in the AFL.
