MFD READING GUIDE It is important to stress that there is no agreed required reading list for this examination. Many successful candidates simply use their undergraduate lecture notes and textbooks. That is a very sensible approach because it is always easier to revise from familiar material. Remember that the syllabus is provided to indicate the areas of knowledge which are expected of candidates. While it is not intended to be exhaustive or to exclude other topics which may be of similar relevance to clinical dental practice, you should use the syllabus as your basic reading guide. Looking at the syllabus, there are 2 broad sections. Both of these will be examined in Part 1 examination, which each accounting for approximately 50% of the syllabus. Within Section 1 of the syllabus, For the Part 1 examination, approximately 25% of the questions relate to Section 1.1, 20% to Section 1.2 and 5% to Section 1.3. The remaining questions will come from Section 2 of the syllabus, and while all reasonable effort will be made to include an equal proportion of questions from each of the sub-sections in Section 2, this may vary from time to time at the discretion of the Examiners. For the Part 2 examination, most of the questions (but not all!) relate to Section 2. This handout gives a number of textbooks which are appropriate for the different sections of the syllabus. All of them are the personal selections of the examiners and in many cases there is a wide variety of alternative choices. In studying such books to prepare for the examination, use the syllabus to guide you towards the chapters that are most relevant. In addition it is prudent to practice answering questions as part of your examination preparation. Past papers are not available but there are some very useful collections of self- test examination questions available commercially. The best of these include: Fan, Kathleen F.M.: “MCQs for Dentistry”, 220 pages. PasTest Ltd., 2006. ISBN 1904627528. Price €30 approx. 1
