Global Recovery of the world economy has been slower than expected. Economies such as Spain, Greece as well as the United States are still reeling under the effects of the global economic meltdown. The downgrading of US credit rating has aroused spectres of the 2008 Financial Crisis. The onus of growth is now on emerging economies as they continue to grow rapidly. But these economies have problems of their own such as increased spending on social goals and advancing structural reforms. In times like these when the only sure thing is uncertainty, the new breed of business leaders needs to be flexible, adaptive and far more resilient to be able to cope with a changing dynamic economic environment. Future finance professionals need to be innovative and employ creative strategies to deal with problems at hand. They need to be open to new challenges.

Finance is not just about numbers but also about effective business planning and making decisions to fit an appropriate business model for a particular service. In the post-crisis world a professional needs to upgrade his skills and expand his knowledge base with renewed vigour to increase his chances of employability. Ethics cannot be taught from fine print. We at DFS, believe that they can be imbibed by dissecting prevalent issues with in the framework of our course. Ambition and a high level of personal motivation are important but so are honesty and integrity. Our Endeavour is to educate a new breed of leaders with a heightened awareness of social and ethical sensitivity, leaders who lead not only in business but also in society. This is the time for reflection and change and to work towards a brighter future not just in economic but also in social and human terms.

From HOD’s Desk

Twenty four years ago, when the Master of Finance and Control programme was launched by the Department of Financial Studies, it was a foray into unchartered territory in the Indian educational scenario. Based on the lines of MS(Finance) offered internationally, it was one of its kind, a niche course in Finance, designed and developed to cater to the needs of the fast growing Indian Financial Sector.

Guest Lectures, Seminars & Workshops

To extend learning beyond the classroom teaching, we invite experts from the industry to conduct guest lectures, seminars and workshops on various topics and issues related to finance. At DFS, there is always an endeavour to create opportunities for the inquisitive students to interact and learn from the industry experts. Such interactions also give the prospective recruiters a chance to gauge the students knowledge and understanding of the subjects and fundamentals of finance and have helped them make the best decisions.

Live Projects

The objective is to encourage the students at DFS to apply their knowledge to practical issues in the industry. If undertaken before the Placement or lnternships Season, these projects give the companies an indication of the profile of the students. These projects help the students gain valuable insights into the workings of the industry.

Internships

As part of the course requirement, at the end of first year each student is required to undertake practical training for a period of two months in various organizations. The internships widen the students perspective by providing an exposure to real life organizational and environmental situations.

Placements

The Placement Season starts in the month of August with the Placement Team members visiting organizations for corporate presentations and inviting them for campus placements. According to the students preferences and the availability of slots, the placement team schedules the whole season. The placements start in the last week of October and the process includes a pre-placement talk followed by the placement process decided by the organization.

MoU with MCX-SX

Academic learning should be more aligned with the needs of the industry so that students are exposed to the skill set required to meet the demands of the customers and challenges of competition.

This gap can be narrowed down through a coordinated approach ensuring closer interactions among industry, institutions and the academia. The agreement with MCX aims at helping students imbibe practical financial knowledge through means of short term courses

and training sessions. A software with ticker application will be installed for research activities to be undertaken by the faculty and students. The association aims at promoting research in the financial market by providing financial, technical and data assistance. The agreement is a step towards fostering a long term association with the organization in the form of guest lectures and internships. As a precursor, a training session was held by MCX-SX at the department explaining its core activities and imparting know how.

The Global PerspectiveTrue success never believes in boundaries, and also to have an authentic benchmark of the achievements, one needs to gauge it from an international perspective. So, gearing the generation to meet the challenges, by exposing them to a wider arena is what we mean by adding an international perspective.

Soft Skills Workshop: 23rd February 2011

The month of February saw MFC students take a much needed break from the rigours of Finance to attend a training session on effective corporate communication conducted by our distinguished alumnus Mr. J.P. Singh.

A member of the 1997 batch of MFCians, Mr J.P Singh started his career at Citibank and made his way up the corporate ladder in the banking industry before venturing out on his own and starting his own corporate communication training and consultancy firm.

In his characteristic style, Mr. Singh set the session in motion with an introductory introspective session where the strengths and weaknesses of each participant were gauged. The main training session was disseminated via an interactive presentation that went over the various stages of effective communication. The session was interspersed with role playing and team building exercises. To touch base with the corporate world Mr. Singh peppered the workshop with anecdotes, quotes, articles and videos. The benefits of the workshop were apparent at the culmination of the session when the students took a self administered test. The individual attentions given to students and Mr. Singh’s instant bond with the students were the highlights of the day.

Prof. Muneesh Kumar

Prof. Sanjay Sehgal

Change is the only constant. Over the 25 years of its existence, the Department of Financial Studies has evolved into an institution of repute that has nurtured a new breed of finance professionals who look beyond the numbers and employ creative strategies to overcome the challenges faced in the dynamic economic environment. Pride and Nostalgia are more than just words, as I reminisce about the 25 years that have passed. My fellow colleagues who form the bedrock of DFS, the wide eyed neophytes who make teaching such a pleasure, alumni who have branched out into various eche-lons of the corporate world, and our corporate associations who have shown faith in brand DFS. I congratulate everyone on this joyous occasion. Every milestone calls for contentment, celebration and also a gentle reminder that our journey to excellence is still on.

Student. Alumni. Professor. The monikers might have changed, but the bond I share with DFS remains the same. Over the years DFS has been able to leverage its excellence in outstanding technical knowledge coupled with a curriculum attuned to the changing needs of the financial world and has consistently produced Financial Managers of the highest quality. Having been a symbiotic part of the Department for the past two decades I can assert that the pillars of DFS’ ethos - Tenacity, Hard-Work, Professionalism and Integrity are as relevant today as they were 25 years ago. I heartily congratulate the Department-My fellow professors, academicians, official staff, alumni, students and industry partners for their constant support - on this joyous occasion and I wish them all the best for the future.

-Rohit Sarin, Founder Partner, Client Associates
