GLOSSARY Contemporary Religious Music A loosely defined genre of music that has developed over the last sixty five years incorporating elements of popular music (e.g. Pop, Rock, R&B, Spirituals, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, etc.) which is lyrically focused on matters concerned with the Christian faith and primarily intended for the performance as part of services of worship. Folk Song A song of unknown authorship that has been passed on, preserved and adapted (often in several versions) in an oral tradition before being later written down or recorded. To reiterate, once the composer can be identified, the song is NOT considered a Folk Song. Folk Songs cover many musical styles and generally use traditional melodies to tell a narrative or speak on social, political or popular issues. Modern songs composed in the style of traditional folk song are not authentic Folk Songs. Calypso Developed during the 19th century with roots in Trinidad’s Carnival, it grew out of the various styles of Carnival music, including ribald songs, traditional drumming and stick-fighting songs, first sung in French Creole and by the turn of the century, sung in English. These tunes were originally sung by ‘Chantuelles’, singers who led carnival masquerade bands. In the late 1920’s, calypso was transformed into a more ballad style of political and social commentary. In the late 1970’s a completely new style, ‘Soca’, was created by Lord Shorty, Shadow and others. These artists brought a range of influences, from Indian music to R&B, and melded them into a more dance-driven, less-lyric oriented style that has since evolved apart from calypso. Lieder German romantic poetry of the late 18th and 19th century that was set for voice and piano, the two being of equal importance in the presentation. Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brahms, Wagner Wolf, Mahler and Strauss are considered the most prominent composers of Lieder.

Oratorio An Oratorio is a large-scale musical composition for vocal soloists, choir and orchestra with a story based on a sacred theme performed without costume, scenery or action. An Oratorio Solo is one of the vocal solos composed as part of an Oratorio. Commonly performed Oratorios have been composed by, Handel, Haydn, Bach and Mendelssohn. Gospel Music: A kind of Christian music based on American folk music, marked by strong rhythms and elaborated refrains, incorporating the elements of spirituals, blues, and jazz, and reflecting aspects of personal religious experience of the Protestant evangelical groups (both white and African-American). Gospel songs first appeared at religious revivals during the 1850’s, but they are more closely associated with the urban revivalism that arose in the last third of the 19th century. By the middle of the 20th century, they had also become a distinct category of popular song, independent of religious association. Black Gospel: A 20th century sacred music style that contains elements borrowed from the Negro Spiritual, Jubilees, White Gospel, Blues, Jazz and other styles of popular music. Black Gospel music uses improvisation, syncopation and off-the-beat phrasing, call and response, and religious texts and is always accompanied with instruments or body percussion. Negro Spiritual: A form of African American 20th century sacred music, representing the Christian ideals of salvation and hope. Negro Spirituals are a musical form indigenous and specific to the African-American religious experience in the United States. They are characterised by a vocal style that is full, rich and heavily accented; they should generally be sung in dialect. Choral arrangements are typically performed ‘a capella’, though instrumental accompaniment such as on the piano, organ, electric guitar, drums and other percussion instruments has been used in more recent times. Parang: The body of Music (traditionally sung in Spanish) associated with the Nativity and the ‘serenading’ which takes place seasonally at Christmas. The Music is specifically a Trinidadian representation of Hispanic music characterised by Latin

American rhythms and instruments. Traditional Parang includes a variety of song types. Only the following types may be performed: (a) House to House serenades: The Aguinaldo or Serenal, Guarapo, Estribilio,

Manzanares, Joropo and Despedida; or (b) The Nativity: Anunciacion, Naciemento. Any of the above is acceptable in the Parang class category. Classical Indian Music: Indian Classical music is monophonic in nature and based around a single melody line, which is played over a fixed drone. The performance is based melodically on particular ragas and rhythmically on talas. The two main streams of Indian Classical Music are Hindustani classical music, (originally North India) and Carnatic music (South India). The Indian Musical system, unlike Western classical, uses the “just” intonation tuning as opposed to the “equal” temperament tuning system. Chamber Music: A form of Classical Music written for a small group of instruments. Most broadly, it includes any ‘art music’ that is performed by a small number of performers with one performer to a part. The word “chamber” signifies that the music can be performed in a small room with an intimate atmosphere.
