Metrology Milestones• Metrology Task Force
– Vacuum vessel manufacture - P. Goranson– Mod. Coil Form manufacture - D. Williamson– Mod. Coil winding- S. Raftopoulos– PF and TF coil manufacture - M. Kalish (you should probably be on the task force)– Field Period Assy( VV/Mod coil/TF coil)- M. Cole– Machine Assy – M. Cole/E. Perry– Diagnostics - R.Feder– PFC's - (determining and installing monuments for future PFCs and Diagnostic mounting points and sight lines) - TBD (might make
sense to combine with Diagnostics task)
• Tasks – Cog. Individuals to identify metrology needs and instrumentation/software that will accomplish task.
• Provide a list of metrology tasks that are to be incorporated into the manufacturing, test and inspection plan.
– Metrology Task force to coordinate the Procurement of hardware and software so that costs/redundancies are eliminated (or minimized, and performance is maximized
– WBS managers to incorporate metrology tasks and hardware/software purchases into budgets, schedules and WAFS.
• Deadlines– August 7 – Individual areas to determine metrological needs and identify hardware/software– August 15 – Metrology Task Force to distill selections and make final decisions.– August 30 – WAFS, schedules and budgets to reflect metrology tasks & purchases– After PDR – Procurement of hardware & software as needed to R&D, prototype manufacturing and final manufacturing.
Vacuum Vessel Manufacture
• Provide baseline Cad model to fabricators.
• Fabricator to benchmark his metrology equipment by measuring a PPPL supplied template (maybe the cast 1/10 VV model).
• NCSX representative present at fabricator for measurements at key hold points (TBD during manufacturing).
• NCXS to independently verify VV geometry upon receiving (need project owned metrology hardware). Incorporate into as-built model.
• NCSX to install new monuments in locations to facilitate assembly on Field periods and machine.
Modular Coil Manufacture
• Provide baseline Cad model to fabricators.
• Fabricator to benchmark his metrology equipment by measuring a PPPL supplied template (maybe the cast 1/10 VV model).
• NCSX representative present at fabricator for measurements at key hold points (TBD).
• NCXS to independently verify mod coil geometry upon receiving (need project owned metrology hardware). Incorporate into as-built model.
• NCSX to install new monuments in locations to facilitate assembly on Field periods and machine.
Modular Coil Winding
• Establish benchmarks on casting to use as references for measuring the winding process.
• Using local measuring devices, wind coil using shimming (as required) to locate turns in proper positions
• Measure height and width of coil at critical locations.
• Measure location of coil surface with respect to monuments. Incorporate into as-built model.
• Install new monuments in locations to facilitate assembly into field periods and machine.
PF and TF Coils Fabrication
• NCSX representative present at fabricator for measurements at key hold points (TBD).
• NCXS to independently verify mod coil geometry upon receiving (need project owned metrology hardware).
• NCSX to install new monuments in locations to facilitate assembly on Field periods and machine.
Field Period Assembly
• Establish monuments on vacuum vessel, modular coil, TF coils and support structure to aid in assembly.
• Using global and local positioning systems, assemble field period.
• Measure height and width of coil at critical locations.
• Measure location of coil surface with respect to monuments.
• Install new monuments in locations to facilitate assembly on Field periods and machine.
• Weld on port extensions using metrology system to ensure that position is correct.
• Measure final position of VV, mod coil and TF monuments. Incorporate into as-built model.
Machine Assembly
• Establish monuments on field period assemblies to use as references machine assembly.
• Assemble 3 field periods into complete machine. Adjust field period to achieve best plasma/magnetic conformance to specs
• Measure final position field period monuments. Incorporate into as-built model.
Diagnostics
• Using “As-built” model and monuments, establish port axis lines.
• Install monuments onto vacuum vessel inner wall corresponding to plasma midplane?
Plasma Facing Components
• Using the port axis lines, establish monuments to use as references for installing future PFCs.
Test Cell Preparation
• Establish a global coordinate system that allows the repositioning if the metrology hardware. (Arcsecond GPS is leading candidate).
• Install monuments on walls, floor and ceiling to allow local positioning systems (FARO arm and Laser Tracker) to reference the global coordinate system.
• Establish an “order for installation” for large components so that we minimize the blocking of sightlines required for machine assembly.
