The first three months of this Rotary Year hasbeen a roller coaster ride for all of us, it was both exhilaratingand terrifying. We are all thrilled to implement new ideas, projects and activities but at the same time, we are all anxious

of what is in store for us for this year. The enthusiasm, excitement, anxiety and stressbrought about by tons of deadlines and demands at school, at home, at work, and weeklyschedule of club events and activities made us all realized that we are just a human being. We are not superheroes…we have no super powers…we do not have power shields toprotect us against bad weather, heavy traffic, pollution, inequality, poverty, anddiscrimination. We are but ordinary people trying to put our best efforts to doextraordinary tings in any way we can to make life easier for our fellowmen.

This is what the first issue of METRO is all about, “ordinary people doingextraordinary things.” Meet the officers and members of Rotaract Manila Metro as theypromise to start the revolution – revolution for change (We Are Metro, pages 6-8). Knowmore about the woman behind Rotaract District 3810 (Life Full of Bumpy Secrets, page 11).Discover how one act of kindness spread a multitude of joy and hope to the children ofRotary Village in Alapan, Imus, Cavite (A Bag of Hope, page 10). Celebrate life with ourgrandparents (LOLOLA, page 12). Respected Journalist and Film Director showed his realself as he mingled with our fellow Rotaractors (Real People. Real Stories. page 9)

Situations, no matter how sad or challenging theymay seem to be, make us become resilient and bring out thesuperhero within us.

The Rotaract Club of Manila Metro celebrated its

Tenth Year of existence and held its 11th

Induction Ceremonies at SOFITEL Philippine

Plaza last August 29, 2009. The theme for this

year’s celebration was “Everything in Black and

White: Clearly Defining the Future”.

All members of the club and all invited guests

were required to strictly wear Black and White

attire. Different District Rotaract Representative

from different districts attended the event.

Beloved Rotarians from our mother club, Rotary

Club of Manila Metro, graced the event with their

presence and undying support to its youth club.

Past president Erwin Macam was the host of the

evening. He initiated a very outstanding program

as he used different terms to represent each part

of the program.

The first part of the program was dedicated to the

new members of the club as they were formally

inducted as members of the Rotaract Club of

Manila Metro. The new members are Alia, Liezel

and Angee. It was DRR Izel Guatno who inducted

them into the club. On the other hand, DRC Gabe

Trias inducted into office the new set of officers

who will lead the club to another successful

Rotaract year.

The best part of the program was the turnover

ceremonies where President Princess Encabo

transferred the leadership for the club to now

President Paolo Naïve. The symbolical turnover

of the Bell and Gavel was set to a really dramatic

mood. After the turnover, messages were given to

the club by invited guests. A video message from

Charter President Hazel Tañedo Cayetano was

also shown during the program.

The night ended with the Metro Wonder Girls

dancing the hit Nobody.

The Rotaract Club of Manila Metro onits commitment to pursue excellenceamong its members conducts itsmonthly club assembly by invitingdifferent personalities as guestspeaker/s. Last July, the club focusedon the roles and responsibilities ofRotaract officers and members.President Paolo Naive, IPP PrincessEncabo and Sec. Romel Bautista werethe speakers that day.

Because of the success of the club’sassembly last July, we invited anotherspeaker that would inspire andmotivate our members to continuedoing selfless and truthful service toour fellowmen. Through the help ofPDRR Chock Encabo, we were able toinvite well-known and respectedbroadcaster journalist and film director,Cesar Apolinario for our August clubassembly entitled Real People. RealStories.

We also invited our fellow Rotaractorsnot just in our district but also in otherdistricts to join us in listening to Mr.Apolinario’s motivational speech. Itwas a well attended activity held atthe Asian Social Institute last August 15,2009. Our sister clubs from RotaractParanaqueKapwa and RotaractMakati both from District 3830 andRotaract San Pedro East from district3820 were able to join in thismemorable event.

Mr. Apolinario was able to inspire uswith the two documentaries he hasshown us that depict the life ofordinary people doing extraordinarythings to make their life and otherpeople’s lives worth living. That wasreally an intimate moment we had withMr. Apolinario, after his talk we hadthe chance to have an open forumwhere he answered all questions beingasked by our Rotaractors.

It was really a remarkable experiencefor all of us.

The hope for a brighter future is truly inthe hands of people who cares andunselfishly share their blessings. It wasoverwhelming to know that in spite ofthe global economic crisis that the wholeworld is facing, there are still a lot ofpeople who willingly extend theirhelping hand to reach out to ourfellowmen.

Our club, the Rotaract Club of ManilaMetro was a witness to these acts ofkindness when we started Phase 1 of ourS.I.K.A.P project last July wherein wedistributed school bags with schoolsupplies and learning materials todifferent areas in Manila.

The S.I.K.A.P project or Sa Iyong KamayAng Pag-Asa (The Hope is in Your Hands)launched last May 23, 2009 aims to adoptthe community library of the RotaryVillage in Gawad Kalinga in AlapanImus, Cavite. From the day of itslaunching until this very moment, pledgesand donations from support groups likefriends, officemates, sponsoring RotaryClub, our regular donors and fellowRotaractors came pouring in. Through thehelp of PP Carlos Chianpian from theRotary Club of Manila Metro andTreasurer Jo Ann Cornelius from the InnerWheel Club of San Leandro, CaliforniaDistrict 5170, we were able to produce 200school bags. We have distributed thebags to Gawad Kalinga sites inParañaque and Imus, Cavite, and to adepressed community in Muntinlupa.

From then on, we realized that theS.I.K.A.P project of our club is not just anordinary book drive campaign that aimsto provide reading materials to lessfortunate children but a call foreveryone to be an instrument of changeby sharing any of their blessings tochildren who cannot afford to havesomething they could their own.

As of this writing, we have collectedbooks from our supporters, friends,Rotaract Clubs and Rotary Clubs, justenough to fill in a whole library. Weenvision this library as a place oflearning, a place to weave their dreamsand a place to realize that there is hopeand a bright future.

We would like to believe that the bagswe have distributed are simply asymbol of hope that if we actcollectively…if we open our hearts toeveryone…we can change and shapethe future in our own little ways.

DRR Izel Guatno and her Big Reveals

by: Sec. Romel BautistaThis column aims to unravelthe truth behind the coversof illumined reputation ofthe people we know and thepeople we find remarkablefor what they have done andfor what kind of characterthey have come to establish. This column is for ordinarypeople who chose to have anextra-ordinary living. Our lifeis just short for us to beblinded of the idealism thatthe world is aiming toventure. Life is too short thatwe do not have to regret whywe not came to know that inthis world there is this oneperson who can inspire usbecause of the beautiful lifehe optimizes to live. This isthe start of revealing thesecrets, the issues and theshocking truth, about thepeople whom we always seeenclosed in a big box.

Because ofthat, why do not we knowthe person leading thebiggest Rotaract district inthe Philippines? Why don’twe know more about thewoman behind everything inRotaract District 3810? Whydon’t we ask the questionsnever been asked to her?Why do not we get to knowher? Why don’t we expandthe small notion we came tohave about the well-respected District RotaractRepresentative of 3810 for R.Y. 2009-2010, and a proudmember of the Rotaract Clubof Manila, DRR Izel Guatno.

Tough Ten Question # 10: How did you knowRotaract and what made you decide to stay?DRR Izel: (It is) because of Oliver, “nangulit kasi”.Also, my experience in GSE gave me back what wasgiven.Tough Ten Question # 9: Tomorrow is the last day onEarth, what will you do?DRR Izel: “Hindi ko alam…outreach saPayatas…pupunta ng Europe…Lilibutin ko lahat…”Follow-up Question: “Pano kung trip for 2?”DRR Izel: “Rotaractor ba ito?...taga-club ba namin?”(laughs)Tough Ten Question # 8: At what age did you felt lovefor the first time? What happened?DRR Izel: “Grade 6. Walang nangyari. Type nyabestfriend ko.”

Tough Ten Question # 7: How doyou want to be rememberedwhen you die?DRR Izel: “Nag-enjoy ako sabuhay”Tough Ten Question # 6: What isthe best thing about being awoman?DRR Izel: A lot of cute boys youget to meet.

Tough Ten Question # 5: “Kung bibigyan ka ngpagkakataong baliin ang isang batas, ano iyon?”DRR Izel: “Gusto ko maging pari. Kasi diba bawalmaging pari ang mga babae?”Tough Ten Question # 4: When was the last time youcried and for what reason?DRR Izel: “Nung oral presentation ng mga clubs sadistrict, habang ang lahat ay nagpepresent, nalamanko namatay yung favorite (Lasallian) brother ko.Hindi ako makaiyak nun. ”Tough Ten Question # 3: “Ano ang mas gusto mo,prangka o plastic?”DRR Izel: “Prangka.” Kapag mayfriend ako, prangka ako.”Tough Ten Question # 2: What is anideal leader?DRR Izel: understanding people’sconcernTough Ten Question # 1: What shall weexpect after your term as DRR?DRR Izel: “Worldwide Recognition ngisang club ng District 3810. Hindi lang saAsia-Pacific Region kung hindi worldwiderecognition.”

With only ten simple questionswe learned a lot from a personwe did not know much before, and that happens to be DRR IzelGuatno. We learned that she isinfatuated (if that is the safestterm I may use) with a member oftheir club, RAC Manila. Welearned that DRR Izel would wantto be a priest. Little did we knowthat what DRR prefers are thereal persons than equivocallyillusory ones.

This is anindication that the people welook up to are also ordinarypeople like us. What makes themdifferent is their daily decisionsthat are full of courage andstrength. Making our livesmeaningful is everybody’schallenge as we face the runningfuture. I will end this with asaying that “Names of men arenot written, they are inscribed.”

A Tribute to Grandparentsby: VP Rey Belen Jr.

In commemoration with theGrandparent’s Day, the Rotaract Club of ManilaMetro held a post-celebration for the elders ofMiraculous Medal Family Center Inc. (MMFCI) inSucat. Muntinlupa, City last September 29, 2009,it was entitled: “LOLOLA.” It was our second timeto visit the elders of MMFCI, the first was lastMay 2009 in one of our Changemaker Volunteeractivities where we also conducted fun activitiesfor them. The lolos and lolas of MMFCI trulymade a mark in our hearts that we chose tocelebrate Grandparent’s Day with them.

Community Service Dir. Chino and Rtr. Alia hostedthe program; it became more exciting during thegames we prepared for them. The first game wasthe Japanese Fan Relay; seeing lolos and lolasenjoyed the game gave us a feeling of happinessand fulfillment. One of the highlights of theprogram was the game Pamaypay o Bye-bye, ourversion of the famous “Pera o Bayong.” LolaMenchie outwits other lolos and lolas in thequestion and answer portion and made it to thejackpot round. PDRR Chock, facilitator of the game, first offered Lola Menchie 25 cents in exchange ofthe Pamaypay she chose. Nevertheless, until theend of the game where PDRR Chock offered herP200, she still chose her Pamaypay and won a bagof groceries.

They felt so loved and cared forthroughout the activity. The smiles on their faceswere unexplainable, their cooperation throughoutthe program was untiring, and the happiness theyfelt after the activity was overwhelming.

The program ended with an assurancefrom Pres. Paolo Naïve that we will continue to visitand share the joys of life with the elders of MMFCI.

Together with the 18 elders ofMMFCI and members of RACMM,we celebrated Grandparent’s Day ina very meaningful way; thecelebration was truly a success! Wewere welcome wholeheartedly bySister Letty, the Directress ofMMFCI. In her short but heart-warming speech, she said that theactivity was very timely becausethe following day’s homily is allabout service for others. SisterLetty was very thankful forchoosing their foundationwhenever we have activities forelders.
