Inadditiontogarneringextraordinaryacademicandprofessionalacclaimlastyear,ourdepartmentunveiledtheDeWALTConferenceSuite,aredesignedconferenceandseminarspacegenerouslyco-sponsoredbyDeWALT.Withitsattractivedesignandinvaluabletechnology,theDeWALTConferenceSuiteservesasabeaconofourdepartment’scommitmenttocollaborationandexcellence.

Ourdedicationtoacademicexcellencewasbuiltonaphilosophyofcollaborationandknowledge-sharing.Inadheringtothisphilosophy,MEcontinuedtodevelopengagingeducationalprogramslastyear,suchastheincreasinglypopularDistinguishedSeminarSeries.Thisexcitingprograminvitesrenownedfacultyfromdomesticandinternationalresearchorganizationsanduniversitiestoaddresscurrentandemergingtopicsinengineeringresearch.Astheprogramgrows,welookforwardtowelcomingmoreveteranandrisingMechanicalEngineeringfacultytoourcampusforenlighteningdiscussionsofsignificanttopicsinourfield.

Whilecelebratingtheacademiccontributionsofnon-UMDfacultyisessentialtoourmissionofcollaboration,wecouldnotignoretheamazingaccomplishmentsofourinternalcommunity.MErecognizedtheachievementsofcurrentstudentsandfacultyattheannualStudentAwardsReceptionandtheFacultyAwardsBreakfast,bothofwhicharehighlightedinthisissue.Withrespecttotheachievementsofourstudentsandfaculty,IofferspecialcongratulationstoProfessorsHughBruck,PeterSandbornandBaoYang,aswellasrecentgraduatePhillipHannam(ME’09).ProfessorBruckwasrecentlyelectedFellowoftheAmericanSocietyofMechanicalEngineers(ASME),PeterSandbornwaspromotedtofullProfessorandBaoYangwaspromotedtoAssociateProfessor.Mr.Hannam,formerrecipientofthenationallyprestigiousTrumanScholarship,wasawardedtheUniversityMedal—thehighesthonorbestowedonagraduatingsenior.AspleasedasIamtodelivernewsofthesesuccesses,ImustalsoexpressmyimmenseprideintheeffortsoftheentireMEcommunity,andIencouragereaderstovisittheStudent,FacultyandStaffsectionsofthisAnnualReportformoreontheiraccomplishments.

OnMay4,2009,theMEdepartmentunveiledthenewDeWALTConferenceSuite.SponsoredbyDeWALT,asubsidiaryofBlack&Decker,thenewSeminarRoomandConferenceRoomboastsincreasedsquarefootageandtechnologicalupdates,inadditiontonewinteriorandexteriordesigns.

ThegrandopeningoftheConferenceSuitewasattendedbyJohnSchiech,PresidentofDeWALTIndustrialProductsCompany;NatalieShields,VicePresidentandCorporateSecretary,B&DCorporation;GregMoores,VPofEngineering,DeWALTConstructionTools;andseveralDeWALTemployees.ClarkSchoolDeanDarryllPinesandDepartmentChairAvramBar-Cohen,alongwithseveralfacultyandstaff,wereonhandtothankthesponsorsfortherenovation.

Throughouttheyears,Black&Deckerhasemployedover300graduatesfromtheuniversity,manyofwhomareMEalumni.Additionally,facultymembersandBlack&Deckerresearchanddevelopmentstaffhavepartneredonmanyresearchendeavors.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING MISSION

ThemissionoftheUniversityofMaryland’sDepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringistoprovideanoutstandingeducation;conductinnovative,groundbreakingresearch;addresstheneedsofcitizens,industryandgovernment;andproviderelatedservicetothecampuscommunity,aswellasthecommunityatlarge.

Themissionshallbeguidedbyacommitmenttocontinuousimprovementintheoverallqualityofteaching,research,andservice.AmajorfocusoftheDepartmentistoprovideengineeringeducationwithsufficientscopetoincludethebasicandspecializedengineeringtrainingnecessaryforthecurrentandemergingneedsofsociety.TheDepartmenthasarelatedresponsibilitytocontributetotheadvancementofknowledgebyconductingresearchatthecuttingedgeofscienceandtechnology.Giventherapidadvancesinscienceandtechnology,thedepartmentalsohasaprofessionalresponsibilitytoprovidecontinuingeducationtopracticingengineers.

Aspartofthismission,ourDepartmentfacultyandadministrationaredrivenbyanobligationtoservetheneedsofthecampuscommunityandthecommunityatlargeinthespiritofcollegialcooperation.
