    METHYLENE CHLORIDE

    Product Information

Due to its high solvent capacity, methylene chloride offers a range ofwidely versatile applications.

Methylene chloride acts as a solventand extraction agent for lubricants, oils, mineral oils, waxes, resins, cellulose ester, caffeine, etc. in themetal-working, textiles, leather, plastics, pharmaceuticals and foodindustries. It is also used as acomponent in paint stripping and

metal degreasing agents, as propel-lant additive and in removal-agentformulations for the production ofpolyurethane foam.

Methylene chloride is also well-knownas a highly efficient solvent and pro-pellant component in sprays, wherebyits application in cosmetic preparati-ons is restricted to 35%(EC Dir. 96/335).

Due to its volatility, exercise particularcaution during application and hand-

    ling of methylene chloride.

Information relating to the environ-ment, health and safety:

Methylene chloride evaporates morerapidly than other solvents normallyemployed in industrial applications.

Make sure, therefore, that thethreshold limits values for solventvapour concentrations in the work-place are not exceeded and thatrestrictions on emissions are main-tained. Take special precautionswhere necessary (additional ventila-tion, possibly protective masks). Anypertinent restrictions onemissions should be observedaccording to each application.

Methylene chloride does not destroythe ozone layer. It influences only toa very minor extent smog formation, global warming and acid rain.Methylene chloride is biologicallydegradable in the environment.

instruct them in standard safety pro-cedures.

For further details, please refer tothe safety data sheets.Your localDow office or distributor will be plea-sed to provide you with anyfurther information.

As with other CHCs, methylenechloride may have a detrimentaleffect on health and the environ-ment if incorrectly applied. It is the-refore vitally important to train per-sonnel in the safe handling, storageand disposal of CHCs and to
