Introduction
•In poetry, a meter is a recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line. Furthermore, one line has to be within ten syllables.
Foot
•A foot in poetry, is a pair of unstressed and stressed syllables.
EX: • |comPARE|= 1 foot
•{ShallI} {comPARE}{thee TO}{a SUM}{mer’sDAY?} = 5foot
Types of feet
•There are poetry that has the different patterns of stress.
•EX: Iamb (Iambic) Unstressed + Stressed =Two Syllables Trochee (Trochaic) Stressed + Unstressed =Two Syllables Spondee (Spondaic) Stressed + Stressed =Two Syllables Anapest (Anapestic) Unstressed + Unstressed + Stressed
