young symphonic band series GRADE LEVEL: 2 (MEDIUM EASY) Metamorphosis Arranged by Gary Fagan Metamorphosis should be viewed as a high energy piece and should maintain forward momentum throughout with special care taken not to let the tempo drag. The opening introduction needs to be played in marcato style with clean attacks on all notes and slight separation indicated by accents. At measure 17, the ostinato bass part should continue in this style while the clarinets provide a slurred, linear harmonic structure prior to the entrance of the main theme by flute and alto sax in measure 18. Be sure all players begin the crescendo in measure 25 softly and crescendo rapidly through the pyramid chord. At measure 37 the style also consists of a very short accompaniment figure in the upper woodwinds played against a soaring legato phrase tossed around from one brass section to another. The same holds true at measure 61 where the very smooth chords in the clarinets and alto saxes contrast against the very percussive rhythm in the low woodwinds. Use tubas here only if the low woodwind part needs strength. The snare drums may use single strokes while playing on the rim or use both sticks together as in a very closed flam. The remainder of the piece travels through recaps of previously played material.
