Universal Testing Machines For Metals

Tensile testing is the most commonly used test to determine mechanical properties of metals. Electromechanical testing instruments are widely used throughout the metals industry for evaluating important properties such as Tensile strength, Young’s modulus of elasticity, yield strength, Poisson’s ratio, elastic and plastic deformation, and strain hardening behavior.

Also many components such as springs, pipes, containers, etc. rely on compression tests that provide data on force versus deformation. The mechanical requirements for many metals are typically specified as “tensile strength,” “yield point,” and “% elongation” in addition to other properties.

Other methods for testing metals include shear, bend or flexure, impact, fracture toughness, fatigue and torsion to fully evaluate those properties. To evaluate thermal effects, metals testing is conducted at extreme temperatures from -196°C (-321°F) to + 1000°C (+ 1800°F).

Common ASTM standard test methods for testing metals include: ASTM E8 Tensile Testing of Metals, ASTM E345 Tensile Testing of Metallic Foil, ASTM B399 Plane Strain Fracture Toughness, ASTM E517 Plastic Strain Ration (for Sheet Metal), ASTM E646 Tensile Strain Hardening Exponent (of Sheet Metal), ASTM B565 Shear Testing of Aluminum Rivets and Rods, ASTM E132 Poisson’s Ratio and ASTM E111 Young’s Modulus. In addition to ASTM standards there are many other International standards such as DIN, ISO, EN, JIS, etc. that can be fulfilled with universal testing machines.

Sample Preparation

www.WorldofTest.com/tensilkut.com

A test specimen is the most important component of tensile testing for it determines the actual physical properties of the material being tested. The specimen must conform to exact physical dimensions and must be free of induced cold working or heat distortion. Qualified laboratory personnel and accurately calibrated tensile machines are important, but the ultimate test results are based on the quality and accuracy of the test specimen.

A highly skilled machinist, a precision milling machine and considerable hand finishing can achieve the required configurations of the test specimen. However, the slow milling cutter speeds create heavy chip loads and can induce severe internal distortion to the machined edges. The amount of induced cold working or heat distortion cannot be determined by visual or heat distortion cannot be determined by visual inspection, hence test results often produce erratic and inaccurate tensile properties.

Blanking Press and Grinding System - Our Specimen Blanking Presses are available in C-Frame & O-Frame Designs for punching metallic specimens out of sheet metals with thickness up to 8mm. Blanking is the most efficient and economical method for specimen preparation. Also a High precision Specimen Grinding System which removes the cold hardened edge within a short time and guarantees a high accuracy of the specimens, is available.www.WorldofTest.com/blankingpress.htm

Tensilkut I Milling Machines - The Tensilkut I was designed for the specific purpose of preparing flat metal or non-metallic test specimens. The compact size of the equipment permits it to be conveniently located in the laboratory. Small table top units or larger floor mounted models are available to accomodate any space and/or work volume requirements. The specimens are accurate to within +.0005” when prepared on the Tensilkut machine with a Tensilbit and a standard or special master template. Optional mist coolant and vacuum systems are available for the Tensilkut I.www.WorldofTest.com/tensilkut-1.htm

Tensilkut II Milling Machines - The Tensilkut II is an upgraded version of the original Tensilkut machine, developed in response to customers’ requests for an enhanced, yet still manually operated, economical way to prepare tensile bars and other samples. The Tensilkut II is an enclosed machine which includes integral misting, chip removal and motor speed regulation units. The chip shield around the control head protects the area around the unit from debris, while the sound deadening package absorbs much of the noise of the unit. A series of power switches located on the front of the panel enables the operator to easily access those accessories desired, while the emergency stop switch located on the machine cuts power to all systems simultaneously. For added safety, the Tensilkut II is equipped with a foot-control (“dead-man’s”) switch; the Tensilbit will not rotate unless the operator depresses it. As with the Tensilkut I, the Tensilkut II is accurate to within +.0005” when preparing specimens with a Tensilkut master template and Tensilbit.www.WorldofTest.com/tensilkut-2.htm

Specimens of light gauge sheet must be blanked, sheared or die cut to the required tensile configuration. The basic principle of shearing causes severe deformation and distortion to the critical specimen edges and creates even greater variations and errors in the physical properties.

The ideal tensile specimen should duplicate the pure basic metal or plastic being tested with a total absence of tool marks, incipent cracks, induced stresses, internal deformation or heat distortion. Our range of sample preparation technologies achieve these ideal requirements and produce an almost perfect test specimen.

Metallography

www.WorldofTest.com/metallography.htm

Metallography is the science of revealing and evaluating the internal structures of materials. It is one of the most important methods of materials research today, indispensable to the scientist as well as to the engineer. More recently, advanced materials such as high tech metal alloys, ceramics, composites and polymers have appeared which made metallography become an increasingly vital part of modern industry.Through a process of cutting, mounting, grinding and polishing, a smooth surface is obtained to reach the materials true structure. In order to achieve high preparation quality and reproducible results; a combination of “Right equipment, Correct preparation method and Right consumables” which we call “Total Preparation Solution”, is required.

CUTTINGThe first step in preparing a specimen for metallographic or microstructural analysis is to locate the area of interest. Sectioning or cutting is the most common technique for obtaining this area of interest. Proper sectioning guarantees minimal microstructural damage. Excessive subsurface damage and damage to secondary phases (e.g. graphite flakes, nodules or grain pull-out) should be avoided.Sectioning can be categorized into two areas: Abrasive Cutting and Precision Wafer Cutting. Abrasive cutting is generally used for metal specimens and is accomplished with silicon carbide or alumina abrasives in resin or resin rubber bonds. Proper blade selection is required to minimize burning and heat generation during cutting which degrades both the specimen surface as well as the blade cutting efficiency. Precision wafer cutting is accomplished with thin diamond blades. Wafer cutting is especially useful for cutting ceramics and minerals as well as some metallic materials.

METACUT 250 and METACUT 350 cutting machines are designed for wet cutting of large and small, regularly or irregularly shaped workpieces of metallic, ceramic or composite materials. METACUT 250 has the capacity to cut solid sections up to 90 mm in diameter. The cutting capacity of METACUT 350 is 130 mm. The side access port permits the sectioning of extra-long workpieces. METACUT cutting machines are available in Automatic(A) and Manual(M) versions. SERVOCUT model is the perfect choice for a wide range of materials and for heavy duty cutting applications. It combines the two well proven cutting techniques into the same machine: Chop cutting: The specimen is clamped and the cut-off wheel approaches the specimen via a rocker arm. Table-feed cutting: Feeding the clamped specimen into a rotating cut-off wheel using a slotted feed table. The workpiece to be cut can be accurately positioned in 3 axis which is displayed digitally on the front panel.Precision cutting is used for precise and deformation-free cutting of “Metals, Ceramics, Electronic Components, Crystals, Composites, Biomaterials, Sintered Carbides, Minerals, etc.” MICRACUT Precision Cutter has its place in virtually any metallurgical, geological, electronics, research, biomedical or industrial laboratory. The applications are endless. MICRACUT family of precision cutters are available in 4 different versions.

MOUNTINGAfter cutting the specimen, the next step is mounting. The aim of mounting is to handle small or odd shaped specimens and to protect fragile materials, thin layers or coating during preparation as well as to provide good edge retention. Mounting produces specimens with uniform size so that it is easier to handle in automatic holders for further preparation steps. Basically, two metods are available: Hot Mounting and Cold Mounting. In hot mounting, the specimen is mounted under heat and pressure with a hot mounting press. Cold mounting is preferred for samples which are sensitive to damage from heat and pressure (like coatings, PCB, etc.) Cold mounting resins are easy to use and require mixing which is then poured into a mould and allowed to set.We offer Hydropress and MetaPress Programmable and Automatic Hot Mounting Presses as well as VACUMET Vacuum Impregnation Unit for cold mounting.

GRINDING & POLISHINGIn order to obtain a highly reflective surface that is free from scratches and deformation, the specimens must be carefully grinded and polished before they can be examined under the microscope. Qualitest offers high quality instruments and consumables for achieving this goal.

DIGIPREP preparation systems are designed for fully automated materialographic sample preparation for consistent and reproducible specimen quality. DIGIPREP’s Automatic Head controls the force applied precisely and specimens are prepared exactly the same way everytime, independent of operator skills. With the ability to store and recall preparation programs on the LCD screen, same consistent results are obtained. High level of automation improves the efficiency and gives the operator free time for other tasks in the laboratory. Efficiency is further increased by adding DOSIMAT Peristaltic Dispensing Unit for automation and control of consumable consumption.

FORCIPOL Series of instruments are available as Single wheel and Dual wheel Units (200/250/300 mm wheel size). Both single or double wheel versions are available with constant, dual or infinitely variable rotating speeds with digital display. This allows the setting of the optimum speed for each individual preparation process. When the number of specimens to be prepared increases, FORCIPOL instruments can be fitted with FORCIMAT automatic head for automation. FORCIMAT automatic head provides high rate of sampe preparation and frees the operator from the grinding and polishing procedures

CONSUMABLESHigh sample quality and reproducible results can only be achieved with high quality consumables. Selecting the right consumables for each specific application is not just a matter of preparation qualty - it is also the best way to save time and money. Our cutting, mounting, grinding & polishing consumables for microstructural analysis are produced to match to your specific requirements for high preparation quality. Choosen from a wide selection, designed and tested for use on Metkon metallographic equipments as well as on competitive units.

Resonant Fatigue Testers . Portable Testers

www.WorldofTest.com/fatigue.htmResonant fatigue testing machines can stress specimens or structures with a dynamic load superimposed to a static load. The dynamic load is generated by an oscillating system (resonator) which runs in its natural frequency. The oscillating system consists of masses and springs whereas the structure or the specimen which has to be tested is also part of.The Resonant Fatigue Testing Machines get used to full resonance, i.e. the operating point is situated on the top of the resonance curve. The resonator is excited by an electromagnetic system.Taking advantage of the resonant effect, the power consumption is very low (typical 20 to 500 Watts), with the operating frequency in the range of 50 to 300 cpm.In combination with our Control and evaluation system and software, you can have an intelligent and easy to operate package for your fatigue testing requirements.

ApplicationsResonant Fatigue Tester Machines are very often used for fatigue tests (S/N - curves) or in the fracture mechanics for precracking and crack propagation tests. This principle has many advantages compared to servo-hydraulic machines. All types of tests with a high number of load cycles are beneficial applications for resonant testing machines because of the high testing frequency, and as a result very short testing time as well as very low power consumption. The additional advantage in comparison to servo-hydraulic systems with its actuators, valves and pumps is that maintenance is not required due to the wear resisting construction. The resonant testing machine VIBRRO-FORTE is the latest development. The design of the VIBRO-Forte 500 is based on a strict further development of the resonant system MAGNODYN. An ideal solution has be found to test long shape components like fasteners, reinforcement steel bars, etc. and round and flat specimens. The changeable frequency range is between 50 and 160 Hz depending on the stiffness of the specimen. Noteworthy is the low weight of a testing machine at this high capacityOur Resonant Fatigue Testing Machines are available in the following configurations:1) Mikrotron Resonant Fatigue Tester Compact version, for low load range 5-20 kN 2) Testronic Resonant Fatigue Tester Mid-Capacity version, for load range of 50-250 kN3) Vibro-Forte Resonant Fatigue Tester High Capacity version, for load ranges up to 500kN4) CRACKTRONIC Resonant Testing Machine, A handy system for dynamic bending load applications.

Sheet Metal Testing Machines

Model 100Basic hand-operated sheet metal testing machineRecommended for use wherever a low rate of forming is carried out on thinner sheet metals. An attachable microscope is available as a practical accessory which has a light fixture to illuminate the specimen, making detection of cracks even easier. The blank holding force of 10 kN required by the standard is applied by means of disk springs. The deep drawing index is displayed on an electro-mechanical pulse counter with a resolution of 0.1mm.Drawing force: max. 30kN Blank holding force: 10kN Test: ERICHSEN cupping test Sheet thickness: 0.1-1.5mm

Also suitable for testing materials of less than 0.1mm thickness

Model 111Electro-hydraulic cupping tester with automatic test sequenceThis easy-to-use cupping test machine is intended for conducting tests on sheet metal and strip for the quick control of incoming goods and quality inspection. Its sturdy construction also makes it ideal for use in in-process controls. Designed as a compact benchtop model, this test machine requires a minimum of space. The test cylinder is installed at an angle, enabling the tester to remain seated whilst observing the test. The specimen holding force and drawing speed required to conduct tests to meet the relevant standard are set automatically once the start button is actuated. The cupping test is then conducted automatically. The deep-drawing index is shown on a digital display (resolution 0.1mm). The test machine functions automatically and consequently stops by itself once the specimen has failed. This procedure can be delayed by means of a potentiometer. This is necessary in particular when testing thicker sheets to obtain an objective assessment of the fracture. A special microscope is an optional extra and enhances this procedure.Drawing force: max. 45kN Blank holding force: 10kN Test: ERICHSEN cupping test Sheet thickness: 0.1-2.0mm

Sheet Metal . Strain Measurement

Model 144Laser Bulge AnalyserDuring the hydraulic cupping test (Bulge test) the sheet metal specimen is formed by means of oil pressure without friction. The Laser Bulge Analyser measures the dimensional changes for the first time online during the forming process. If the testing machine is equipped with the appropriate facilities, it is also possible to control online the test parameters. Thus tests e. g. at constant deformation speeds, can be performed. The system determines material data for an extended characterisation of material and quality assurance. The evaluation software calculates the flow curves until failure of material. The Laser Bulge Analyser in connection with a sheet metal testing machine is used where a quick material assessment at low expenditure for the specimen preparation is required.

Model 190Sheetmetal marking instrumentEnables the electro-chemical appli-cation of measuring grids usingappropriate marking templateswhich are available with circle dia-meters from 2mm upward.Sheetmetal markings provide infor-mation aboutthe behaviour of sheet metal during forming. The degree ofstrain due to elongation or compres-sion is clearly recognizable in direc-tion and size on the basis of thedeformation of the applied measur-ing grid.Marking templates with circular measuring grids between 2and 8mm and a marking line thicknessof 0.1mm

Erichsen-AutoGrid Fully Integrated Sheet Metal Testing System with Automatic Strain Measurement The integration of the Sheet Metal Testing Machine with the 3D Camera System allows the drawing processes to be directly observed through the opening of the test head. Thus enabling to combine and analyse the data results from both systems. For this reason, at any point during testing, not only is the 3D Camera System data available, but also the corresponding Sheet Metal Testing Machine data, i.e. drawing stroke, drawing force and sheet holder force. This procedure simplifies considerably the choice of correct image sequences and additionally assists in the interpretation of individual test results. As an additional feature, the data evaluation software of the Sheet Metal Testing Machine displays additional information
