Q: What is this program? This is a Chapter 74 Medical Assist-ing program that allows students to explore medical assisting through instruction, externship and co-op op-portunities.

Q: How did you get involved with this program?I became a Medical Assistant in 1995 and fell in love with it. I have worked in the field as both a clinical and administrative medical assistant for

New Shop Opening!Medical Assisting BY: VICTORIA SANTOS

For the second time in two years, Diman is happy to announce the initiation of a new technical pro-gram, Medical Assisting. Victoria spent a few minutes, with our newest program instructor, Heather Hughes to help share what this new program has to offer.

GETINVOLVEDThere are almost 30 clubs and activities to participate in, here at Diman Regional. Getting involved is the best way to meet new people, stay active, learn new skills and boost your resume!

over 10 years and I’ve been teaching this program for over 10 years. I feel that Medical Assisting is a reputable profession to remain in until retirement or that can be used as a stepping stone for those who wish to advance their education and career within the medical field, and as an educator I have been able to help students see the various professions that they can further pursue.

Q: What will be the structure for your new program? There will be a freshmen class of 12 (six students per cycle). The classroom will simulate a medical office where students will have the opportunity to learn and perform administrative, clini-cal and laboratory duties. The students will be required to wear scrubs, which is typical attire for the medical office. Our shop scrub tops will be navy in color and the bottoms will be in line with the other health related programs at Diman.

Q: What are the career opportunities for the Medical Assisting program?Post-Secondary (a few samples):Administrative and/or Clinical Medical AssistantMedical Records TechnicianEKG TechnicianAssociate’s Degree (a few samples):EMT/ ParamedicOccupational Therapy AssistantRadiologic TechnicianBachelor’s Degree (a few samples):NursingLaboratory TechnologistSports Medicine

Q: What are some of the challenges you will have in your program? Medical Assistants have traditionally been women; however, more men have been entering the field and there is a need and often times preference for the male medical assistant. I think

the greatest challenge will be getting male students to consider this shop as a career opportunity.

More information regrading the Medi-cal Assisting program can be found on the Diman Website under the vocation-al tab (www.dimanregional.org)

Camron Botelho has been selected as our first player to be featured in Sports Spotlight. He is a senior, and the first male player on a Diman Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Team. He is one of six seniors and approximately 18 players on the team.

What position do you play?Libero - I’m a defensive player who serves the ball. The Libero wears a different color jersey from the rest of the team. I’m a back row player.

Do you feel awkward about being the only male player on an all-girl’s team? Not really. Try-outs was the only awkward part. The level of play is different than on an all-male team. There are certain restrictions, for example, males are not allowed to play the from row, which I totally understand and I’m fine with it. I stand almost 6 ft. tall and 150 lbs., it would be a disadvantage to the other teams.

Why did you choose to play volleyball this year, and not in previous years?I was a former fall athlete, playing football for 2 years. I also play recreational volleyball. I thought that, since this is my last year at Diman, why not try to play competitive volleyball?

What other activities are you involved in at Diman? As I mentioned, I am a former football player. I’m currently

a spring track athlete, competing in the long jump and triple jump. This year, I also planning to participate in the winter track team.

Who is the hardest team you’ve played so far this season? We’ve played two of the best teams, back-to-back. We lost to

Sacred Heart and Tri-County, who is currently undefeat-ed. Sacred Heart has always been a difficult team to

beat, but after the game, their coach approached me and gave me positive feedback.

Do you feel other males would be interested in playing for Diman?I have not faced any other males so far, how-ever, I know there are males playing on oth-er teams. I have been approached by several male students who have said they would be interested in joining the team next year. If any boy who wanted to join and is under 6 ft, they should be aware they can’t play the front and may be disadvantage to them.

What are your plans after graduation?I have plans to join the National Guard in the

summer. I have already signed up for the National Guard Student Flights Training Program. I also plan to attend BCC in the fall to study political science.

The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) announces the winner of the GAERF 2018 Student Design Competition. Now in its tenth year, the an-nual contest, themed “Domi-nate the Display!”, challenged students from secondary and post-secondary institu-tions to combine their criti-cal thinking and creativity to design and print an appeal-ing and informational label for a fictitious product (of their choice) that showcases its unique brand and influences the decision to purchase. Entries were judged on their compelling and influential design, (fictitious) product and brand identification, fit to the product container, creativity and originality, and use of printing enhancements.

An independent panel of industry expert judges chose six winners from among the 465 entries—three at the secondary school level and three at the post-secondary school level. Ethan Dollarhide from Graphic Commu-nications, won first place in the secondary school divi-sion of the GAERF 2018 Student Design Competition. Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation in-vited Ethan and Mrs. Gaudencio to attend PRINT 18 in Chicago, IL, where he was presented with a $2,000 award check at the student assembly during Career Awareness Day, Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

The winning submissions were featured in a special display during PRINT 18 at the GAERF exhibit booth in the Workforce Solutions area. Additionally, the entries will be showcased on the Association for Print website in the GAERF section.

Racism. Some say it started here when Columbus “discovered” America, and it has never truly left our nation as a whole. It’s al-ways been here. Some still possess this prejudice mind set, while there’s many others that accept and treat everyone as an equal. Al-though, it’s hidden in some hearts, highly present in others, and disappeared in the rest of us, it will forever be a history lesson for our country to never forget.

In The Hate You Give written by Angie Thomas, she highlights the modern racism that is ex-perienced in America today. Despite the history lessons that were taught about racism and how we should treat everyone fairly, acts of racism is still pres-ent in our society. For example, the unnecessary police brutality that many African Americans have experienced, is the key factor on what this book was written about.

As this story begins, it provides an introduction on the main character, Starr Carter, and her life living in the “Ghetto” Garden Heights neighborhood while attending the “fancy” Williamson high school. This high school also happens to have an enrollment majority of white students .

The story continues and suddenly, Khalil, a close, old Garden Heights friend of Starr Carter, dies right in front of her. Khalil was unarmed and not a threat to a white police officer. The people soon become aware of Khalil’s death. When they do, some of them use the facts of Khalil being a drug dealer to be an excuse for his death. They believe this is why the police officer felt the need to shoot him or that he had it coming either way, despite that he had not been any kind of threat at the time of the event and no one deserves to die that way. However, there are many others that fight for Khalil’s justice. While they do this, Starr also fights but she mainly fights with the grief of losing a friend. She struggles to be a voice for not only that friend but for her family, friends and many others.

Throughout this story, it doesn’t only talk about the police brutality and the change that needs to be made against it, but it also shows the stereotypes we as a society still use today. The messages from this book provides a cautious outlook and becomes a symbol of today’s society.

FROM THE SERIES: THE GIVER QUARTET

Think of the everyday choices you make…What color shirt you want to wear,What you eat for breakfast,Who you can love.

In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, nobody has those choices. This dystopian future com-munity has no perception of color, emotion, or choice. Ev-erybody goes to school, gets an assigned job, and does the same thing until they are “re-leased.” Throughout the sto-ry the main character, Jonas, sees color for the first time, feels snow, and understands love when nobody else does.

The world Jonas lives in, is ruled by “sameness”, a poli-cy that rid everyone’s mind

of color, choice, emotion, and freedom, generations before Jonas was born. Sometime before the setting of this story, mankind realized the best way to solve the world’s problems was to eliminate them entirely, no change in climate means there’s always a good crop, no disagreements and there won’t be any war. Everything that they believed was a burden on human society.

Jonas gets an opportunity, like no other, and his life is com-pletely flipped upside down. From sailboats to war, he expe-riences everything from the past, and the once perfect soci-ety he lived in, now is a trap of confusion and pain.

The same-title movie, available on Netflix, brings the story alive much better than I could have expected. From the black and white to color screen, to the casting, most of the imagery and storyline is true to the novel. . Though the recommen-dation is that you read the book first, to fully understand the plot and emotions, you can still perceive them through the screen.
