General Informa�onPolyurethanes (PU) are one of the most versa�le plas�c materials.
Catalysts exert a considerable influence on PU structures and its end proper�es. There are several chemical reac�ons that occur in Polyurethane PU and Polyisocyanurate PIR systems.The three primary chemical reac�ons are: isocyanate/isocyanate; isocyanate/polyol, and isocyanate/water.
Trimeriza�on is required for the produc�on of rigid foams.Gel reac�on is the defining reac�on for all urethanes.Blow reac�on is important for many foams but produces unwanted gassing in other systems.
These reac�ons occur readily at temperatures above 110⁰C. However, at room temperature without a catalyst, they are slow, taking days.O�en di-amines (and short chain diols) are added as crosslinking agents.
Catalysts have a tendency to catalyze several reac�ons at once, although to differing degrees, and their individual ac�on can be highly temperature and �me dependent.
A mix of catalysts is o�en required to achieve a delicate balance between all these reac�ons in order to achieve the desired end product proper�es and pot life.
Addi�on of metal-containing catalysts in concentra�ons that can be measured in ppm have a profound effect on the rate of reac�ons and offer synergy with amies catalysts.
Catalyst deac�va�on can be a func�on of water content in the PU system and thus hydroly�c stability of the catalyst is also an important formula�ng considera�on.

Tin Catalyst• Tin-based catalysts are widely used in the industry as general purpose fast ac�ng catalysts.• PATcat 3001 (DBTL) and PATcat 3003 (DBTDA) are very versa�le catalysts. For CASE applica�ons, DBTDL can be considered as the workhouse catalyst due to its high efficiency.• PATcat 3012 (Stannous Octoate) is the principal �n catalyst used to manufacture flexible polyurethane foam.• PATcat 3022 is a slow ac�on catalyst providing longer pot life and good hydroly�c stability among other �n catalyst.
Non-�n Catalysts• Apart from being more environmentally accepted, these catalysts may offer performance advantages over �n catalysts in some applica�ons.• Bismuth catalysts’ cataly�c ac�vity is comparable to �n catalysts. They provide low toxicity, are non-yellowing and demonstrate excellent gloss reten�on.• Zirconium Catalysts are fast curing catalysts with selec�ve catalysis. They also provide good pot life with excellent exterior selec�vity• Zinc Catalysts are versa�le catalysts and are hydroly�cally stable. They provide long reac�on �me with good selec�vity.• Potassium catalysts are primarily used as trimerisa�on catalysts and also contribute in gel reac�on.
These catalysts show low ini�al ac�vity at room temperature.
Their ac�vity increases as the exotherm rises or when external heat is applied.
Delayed-ac�on catalysts are of par�cular interest in molded product applica�on where ini�al flow proper�es are paramount.
Many industrial adhesive, sealant and cast-able elastomer applica�ons require a delay before onset of the gel reac�on o�en followed by a “snap cure”. Organomercury compounds are known to provide a long induc�on period (delay) followed by a sharp gela�on profile (snap cure) but due to their inherent toxicity replacements are essen�al.
Most of the delayed ac�on catalysts offered by Patcham produce gel �mes slightly shorter than those provided by mercury catalysts at ambient temperature, allowing for greater product throughput.

Trimeriza�on provides a rigid cell structure important for high insula�on foams as well as flame retardancy and structural integrity.
Potassium Acetate is more of a general purpose catalyst that is very powerful with the trimeriza�on reac�on.
Potassium Octoate is a more specific trimeriza�on catalyst.
