Whether your tastes run to birdcalls or to charming vistas, surprises wait along the curving, oak-shaded roads of western Volusia County. Here in the tiny city of Lake Helen, 11 riders in November and 12 in December embarked on the first five-day tours offered by the Florida Discovery Bicycle Center, a pioneer- ing program of the Florida Bicycle Association. The idea is to help riders brush up their skills while bicycling with a certified instructor—and especially to refresh their awareness of how to stay safe on the road. I call it bike camp for grown-ups. You check in on a Sunday afternoon, start Monday in the Road 1 training of the League of American Bicyclists, then daily pedal out from town as weather and other variables allow. This is a vacation with a second purpose, the greater enjoyment of a hobby that also offers growing numbers of Americans a healthy escape from abject dependence on the car. Lake Helen stands a minute or two off Interstate 4 between Orlando and Daytona Beach. It's about 50 years removed from either one. This little place has limited its growth in order to preserve the gentle pleasures of small-town life. Motor traffic is slow, front lawns deep and shady, and the people warm- ly welcoming. As we pedaled through town on our excursions to nearby sights such as DeBary Hall, some of us virtually glowing in light- weight garb of neon lime or international orange, smiles and friendly waves greeted us along the way. The welcome was more than outward. Residents had us into their homes and back- yards that first week for two of our evening meals, tasty indulgences in Southern favorites—barbecued ribs and chicken one night, ham, black-eyed peas and fried green tomatoes another. Naturally there was icy sweet tea. Some other meals were served by two local bed-and-breakfasts, the Ann Stevens House, built in the 1890s by one of the origi- nal spiritualists of neighboring Cassadaga, and Cabin on the Lake, recently bought by Phil and Heather Lindsay, from England. They fed us well, with succulent steaks at the Stevens House and, from the Brits’ kitchen, a hearty cottage pie with young asparagus, rounded off with grandmum's lemon cake. Another day, our group pedaled to DeLeon Springs State Park for kayaking, followed by lunch from the tabletop grills at the park's Old Sugar Mill Restaurant, where diners pour and flip their own pancakes. Afew months ago a storyran in the Chicago

Tribune (and many ofits affiliated Tribune papers)on the increasing popularity

of "fixies,”fixed gear bikes, the kind that track racersride in velodromes. The rear hub is fixed;you can't coast.

This trend is not just in Chicago, butnation-wide. I've been used to seeing fixiesin bike meccas like Portland, or in cities withbig bike messenger crews, but seeing thempop up in Orlando has been quite a surprise.

I've seen groups of fixies riding throughmy neighborhood.

They're not club riders; no spandex; oftenno helmets. Some are off-the-shelf models;others home-made from conventional bikes.

This trend is clearly not coming from thebike shops, from bike clubs, or certainly anymainstream media.

One key clue to the origin of the trend: theriders are all 20-somethings.

It's clearly the Web.

Fixies themselves are not the point here;it's how their popularity has grown.

FBA has attempted to keep up with theevolution of the Web, but not as well as itcould, or as I'd like to see.

Ultimately our success as an organizationwill hinge on how well we connect withpeople and provide them with things orinformation of value.

Our Web presence is OK, but it doesn'ttake anywhere close to full advantage of theWeb's current connectivity potential, and asquickly as things evolve on the Web wedon't want to get anyfurther behind.

Our site is ratherold-school. It hasgood information onit and it looks great,but it provides noopportunity for oth-ers to contributeother than by sendingus an e-mail.

We have an e-mail list, but it's primarily adiscussion forum, not a very good tool forcompiling information or making connec-tions.

For instance, we have tried (or wanted to

try) to collect information on cycling inter-ests such as bike shops, cycling-specialistattorneys, and touring info.

We want to facilitate local cycling advo-cacy. Doing such things requires a lot oftime and money if you have to get a personto go out and collect and update such infor-mation. But what if those interests came to usinstead?

If we had a Web presence that providedvalue to all the state's cycling interests, theycould provide their own information through

our hub. Howabout an interactivemap where cyclistscould rank theroads?

An area wherecyclists couldschedule smallgroup rides or findout if another bike

commuter might live nearby one could ridewith?

Find out where you can rent a bike?Our site is oriented around the things we

do and wish to do, which is necessary. Butperhaps it also needs to be about the things

people are searching for. Those are not necessarily the same things.

Check out www.google.com/trends. Youcan compare how search terms rank. You'llsee that people are searching for "biketrails" about 20 times more often than theysearch for "bike safety."I know things like these can be done techni-cally; it's all just data. But we also need tounderstand how to draw more people to oursite and keep them coming back.

So that's why this column is entitled"Geeks Wanted." If you are Web savvy, orknow someone who is, and are willing andable to help FBA, we want to hear fromyou.

What is energy exactly? Laura Hallam

M aybe this finallycould be the year

we begin tounderstand what it is that

pushes our bicycles.

Of course, when we think about it, it is ener-gy in the form of calories burned from thefood we ate before the ride.

Energy is a component of everythingaround us not just the stuff that makes thecars go zoom past us or us past them.

Everything that was made, by humans,was usually made by a process that washeated, treated or beat to get that item intothe form that it presently exists and energydid the heating, beating and treating.

This heat, beat and treat mentality useshuge amounts of energy, most of whichcomes from overseas in the form of crudeoil.

Being a part of a bicyclist-related organi-zation, we may want to consider in theupcoming year all the ramifications of theword energy whether it's while we drive ourcars, when we buy new things or, on ourbicycle, be quite efficient and effective withusing locally produced energy to do ourlocal types of things.

When we shop we can look for productsthat are bio-regional and created by methodsother than the heat, beat and treat methodsuch as local foods and products that don't

hide all their transportation energy costs andwastes associated with them.

Most of the time we forget that energy isused in the transportation and creation ofalmost all the products, even organic onesthat show up at our doors or on our tables.

By cutting out the transportation costs webring the efficiency level up to a much high-er point than if we let everything show upfrom other places. Most fertilizers that growthe crops come from crude oils too.

There is a term that is growing in oursociety and it deals with processes withmanufacturing that happen at room tempera-ture using water as the main solution, notdangerous chemicals, where nothing is heat-ed, treated or beat.

Bio-mimicry is the word. Presently with bio-mimicry, scientists

have been observing natural processes andapplying those to industry. Gigantic gainsare being made in the areas of solar panels,cleaning agents and natural solutions of allkinds and both types.

Think of the word solutions and check itall out on the WEB. You may be sur-prised—as was I.

Within the next 10 years, scientists hopeto have all the protein interactions under-stood with the process of natural sunlightdriven photosynthesis where light energy istransformed to other types of energy with anefficiency rate of 98%.

This will one day give us organic—basedsolar collectors that are cheap to produce,highly efficient and will simply changeeverything about energy forever.

Plants have been doing it for hundreds ofmillions of years very effectively and effi-ciently.

You as the consumer will have to educateyourself on the real issues concerning elec-tric versus hydrogen powered cars andunderstand that it's not about what kind ofpower is pushing you forward but what kindof energy it takes to create, maintain anddrive those vehicles.

Total Energy Loading and use is thethought package we need to unwrap and useeach day with each purchase.

There is no free ride in a world of energyand the sources of it are changing and shouldbe.

Today it seems we are still being manipu-lated by both the automobile manufacturingassociations and the oil producing compa-nies.

It is up to us, the citizen and consumer ofthese products, to understand their true ener-gy coefficients. Mandates are falling in thelast days of the oil empire only to berestored and applied by us the informed con-sumer.

This is the year for knowledge and thenaction. Ride your bike more and look up

more too. If you upgrade your auto, upgradeit to something more efficient, preferablyelectric or hybrid.

And when you buy products look deeplyinto their energy use history. But by allmeans, make it a fun year full of useful dis-coveries, applications and preparations.

Why as bicyclists should we care? It'smore about being partners in a world whereeverything is dependent on oil and energy.

It's about knowing and understanding thatthere are many scientists around the worldworking hard on these issues and makinggreat headway.

It's about not giving up hope and becom-ing involved in your community whereveryou live.

It's about regionalizing your lifestyle andneeds to reflect conservation of energy andbetter manufacturing processes. You'vealways been part of the solution as a bicy-clist.

Now you can be a bigger part of the solu-tion as an educated citizen who uses a bicy-cle for uncountable real reasons too.

Renewed inspiration drawn from tragedybrought the association back to life.

FBA on September 27, 2006, entered its10th year of dedication to building a more

bicycle-friendly Florida.

Jump in on our back wheel as we lead you toward our 10th anniversarywith a review of where FBA has been, and, with your encouragement andsupport, where we hope to be.

FBA’s original logo representedthe statewide emphasis on bicy-cling programs organizers feltwas crucial to an effectiveadvocacy program.

A newsletter without a nameannounces the rebirth of the Florida Bicycle

Association. The official 501(c)(3) charter is dated September 27,1997.

The cover story reviews the December 26, 1996, crash that killed MargaretReynal and Doug Hill near Gainesville, whose deaths, according to thenewsletter, “cast a glaring light on our plight as cyclists in a motorized world.”

What difference, the story asks, would better roads with marked bicyclelanes, better education for both cyclists and motorists and more supportivelaw enforcement make?

Summer 1998Share the Road specialty license plate campaign announced

The new FBA was no slouch in the visions department with a mission of statewide education and advocacy. Thatwas a big order for a club with few members and membership fees of only $20/individual ($30/family). To help pro-vide funding for educational programs it hoped to manage and develop, FBA resurrected an idea from the old FBAand set out a campaign to obtain legislative approval for a “Share the Road” license plate. All the association need-ed was 10,000 signatures on a support petition, $30,000 to pay for the initial plate run, a marketing plan for spend-ing the funds and encouraging ongoing sales and a bill passed by Florida’s House and Senate. Deadline for signa-tures and funding: December 1998.

As 1998 drew to an end, FBA asked Bike Florida for help with the required fee. Bike Florida was happy to assist.FBA and its new plate partner met the year end deadline and proceeded to the next stage of the game: tag designand legislative approval.

Then excutive director Carol Wilson credited, among others, Henry Lawrence for spearheading the tag campaign,the Governor’s Council (Bike Florida’s parent organization at the time) for helping with the inital hurdles andFDOT’s Pat Pieratte for her work in securing 402 grant funding that reimbursed Bike Florida for the $30k.

Late in ’98 FBA dis-patched its then secretary DwightKingsbury to meet with Florida Off Road BicycleAssociation board members about merger possibilities. After a longmeeting, during which, as Kingsbury reported, “the consumption of prodigiousplatefuls of Italian cuisine” (accompanied we surmise by equally prodigiousamounts of adult beverage), the group reached an agreement to consideragreement.

Shortly thereafter, FORBA’s Bob Michaels attended FBA’s 1998 annual boardmeeting where much give and take ultimately resulted in a marriage, of sortsof the two organizations.

Nuptuals eventually took place in February ’99, with FORBA becoming anFBA committee.

FBA’s first 10 years...

CAUSE OF DEATH: APATHY - A Cautionary Tale...

West Palm Beach Bicycle Club foldsby Linda Leeds

It is with regret and sadness that weannounce the disbanding of what was per-haps the oldest cycling club in the state, theWest Palm Beach Bicycle Club, onDecember 31, 2006.

Founded in 1963 by Bob Husky, whopassed away this past summer, this once-great club slowly died of apathy, disinterestand the unwillingness of most members totake responsibility for running the club.

For most of its 43 years, the club wasvery active in many aspects of cycling: regu-lar weekly rides, a time trial series, advoca-cy, social events and touring.

Touring included three major events: theTour of Sebring, the Cross Florida Tour andthe Lake Okeechobee Lark.

The Tour of Sebring began in 1982, grow-ing out of the September Century programby the League of American Bicyclists (thenusing the term “Wheelmen”) and wasattended at its peak by almost 600 cyclists.

It was tremendously successful both inpopularity and as a "cash cow" for the club,allowing it to make substantial donations tomany worthy causes involving cyclingand/or children.

Hurricane Frances in 2004 caused thetour’s postponement, and by the next year,no one wanted to take responsibility for pro-ducing the event.

The host hotel, the Kenilworth Lodge,graciously ran it in 2005, donating the pro-ceeds to the club, with the arrangement thatthe event would "belong" to the Lodge afterthat if the club was unable to organize it. In2006, that's what happened. The event con-tinues successfully, but no longer under clubauspices.

The Cross Florida Tour began in the '60sas a stage race across the state, and national-ly-known racers came to participate. Theroute varied, but for many years went fromthe East Coast to the West.

In later years, as it became harder to pro-duce a race due to increasing traffic, theevent evolved as a tour. It always included acentury, and sometimes went fromOkeechobee to Punta Gorda. It was discon-

tinued several years ago, because no onewanted to organize it or even help.

Bob Mohr started the Lake OkeechobeeLark, a one-day 120 mile road ride aroundthe Big O, in 1989, with eight riders and onesupport vehicle.

It grew to over 100 riders and was suc-cessful for several years. It later was domi-nated by racing groups from other counties,making it very difficult to run properly andsafely.

Then the same old problem reared its uglyhead, and that event, too, was discontinued.

The Time Trial Series was tremendouslysuccessful for quite a while, drawing ridersfrom all over South Florida. Most took placeon A1A, with a few longer ones out on StateRoad 80 near 20 Mile Bend.

Traffic management became difficult.Without this, it's not possible to run a safeand effective race. And then, too, the sameold problem.

Several of the weekly rides go on as self-sustaining events, but these don't requiremuch effort or commitment, and peoplewant to ride, so naturally, the rides go on.

Interest in helping with club administra-tion dropped to almost nothing. The clubwas on life support for the past two years:no president or vice president, very fewdirectors, and no one offering to step updespite repeated pleas to the general mem-bership. Many wanted to have a club, but noone wanted to help make it happen.

Club assets have been split evenlybetween the Florida Bicycle Association andthe Boca Raton Bicycle Club's A1A LegalDefense Fund.

PLEASE don't let this happen to yourclub. Do what you must to maintain interestand participation in not just activities but inadministration.

Bring in new people to keep things fresh.Make it fun.

Most of all, instill a sense of responsibili-ty in your members, and urge them to "own"part of cycling's future.

The plate design (shown on facing page) used to kick off the initial campaign subsequentlyevolved into the plate design shown above. The original design created problems with the tagauthorities and was set aside in favor of a centrally located graphic drawn to show the bikeras seen from a passing car “allowing plenty of room” for the bicyclist.

After six years on the road the original plate has been retired, replaced by a design thathearkens back to the original layout. Jacksonville cyclist Jenita Porfilio, 64, diedAugust 2, as the result of being struck by acar in rural Ontario. Dan, her husband, wasriding directly behind her when the crashhappened.

Wandering Wheels, a bicycle club basedin Upland, organized the Canadian bikingtour.

Jenita and Dan were helpful volunteers atBike Florida events. They were among thefew whom you could put in charge andknow that everything would be in goodhands.

"It was the fourth day of a 12-day ride,"Dan Porfilio reported. "She had ridden35,000 miles in 34 states and Canada."

But there were many other numbers thathelped define the life of Jenita. She was amother of three, a four-year-survivor ofbreast cancer and had helped build 35Habitat for Humanity houses in Marion,Indiana.

"She was organized and creative," MarvWiseman, her Indiana pastor said. "She hadthat ability to be the kind of family switch-board for keeping relationships connected.

“And when they take off cross country,there is not a shortage of places where theycan stay overnight, simply because shemaintained all those relationships."

"We're having a hard time dealing with

her loss," said Elaine Behnke, a friend of 33years. "The only consolation is she lovedbicycling and going on these trips and shewas doing what she loves to do when shedied."

Dan, who retired from running a localinsurance agency, said he has no plans toride again.

Wednesday morning, he was on his bike,riding in a group of three with his wife, as isthe custom on the tour. The group was bik-ing along the Trent-Severn Waterway, whichlinks Lake Huron and Lake Ontario.

"From where I was, I could see every-thing," Dan Porfilio said.

A car came around a curve out of controland crossed the centerline. Local police saidthe driver was 25-year-old ElizabethMcLinden.

Jenita was at the front of the cyclists andcould not avoid the car, which was comingat her sideways.

The car struck her bike, and she waspitched about 30 feet in the air, landing in anearby ditch.

Dan was able to avoid injury and went tohis wife's side. She was conscious, waitingfor help.

"I asked her where it hurt," Dan said."She said, 'Everywhere.'"

The police came and a helicopter, whichtransported Jenita to a Toronto hospital morethan 100 miles away.

Dan was left at the scene with a few bik-ers. A passerby took him into Peterborough,where he rented a car for the drive toToronto.

"I thought I would probably be dealingwith getting her home with a broken leg," hesaid.

But Jenita died in Toronto of internalinjuries before her husband could reach her.

"She was a wonderful ... person," saidBob Davenport, founder of WanderingWheels. "She was probably the one personin the whole group who knew everyone.

When you have someone like that die rightin your midst you know the whole group isdeeply impacted."

He said it was the first fatality the clubhas had on one of its tours. It was estab-lished in 1964.

Jenita’s son, Richard Porfilio, Fort Wayne,said his mother did so much with her life.

"She loved to ride," he said. In addition to more than 150 mourners,

there were quite a few cyclists at her memo-rial service in Jacksonville in earlySeptember. There had also been a servicewith friends and family in Indiana.

Memorial ride honorsUte BurkhardtUte Burkhardt, 38, of Hollywood, Florida,was struck and killed October 26 by a truckdriver while she was cycling.

To honor her, members of several cyclingclubs in South Florida along with numerousfriends and co-workers gathered at BigWheel Bicycle.

On November 26, more than 200 cyclistsdeparted shortly after 8:00 a.m. riding any-where from 20 to 40 miles and returning to afestive bar-b-que thrown by Big Wheel own-ers Tony and Sandy Chin.

A donation drive resulted in a monetarygift to FBA in Ute's name. The associationwill earmark benefit proceeds towards bicy-cle safety education and awareness programsfor cyclists and motorists.

The group hopes this event will be thekickoff of an annual memorial ride to honornot only their friend and riding companion,but all the bicyclists who have lost theirlives to road accidents.

In addition to honoring lost lives, theyhope to unite like-minded cyclists to pro-mote education to vehicle drivers, cyclists,pedestrians and law enforcement officers toallow drivers and cyclists to coexist safelyon the roads.

Seventy percent of bike crashes occurwhen the motor vehicle driver fails to yieldto bicyclists. According to the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration'sWebsite, last year 784 bicyclists were killednationwide and an additional 49,000 wereinjured in traffic crashes.

Of the 784 killed nationwide, 124 crashrelated deaths occurred in the state ofFlorida making it the highest fatality statefollowed by California.

These numbers can be greatly reduced bybetter bike path systems and proper educa-tion to cyclists and drivers alike.

OGT won over the volunteers by hiringthe IMBA Trail Solutions Crew for a visitlast winter. The year before we had consult-ed the Crew for risk management guidance.The volunteers implemented many of theirrecommendations in 2005, and IMBA felt thelocal support was present to go forward. Thecrew consisted of trail building professionalsfrom Virginia, British Columbia, Delaware,and California. Heavy equipment for mov-ing mud made development of the Freeridecomplex a reality. OMBA members inspectand document trail and feature conditions ona monthly basis.

Local riders quickly accepted the trailchanges. Respecting closures of some trailsto simplify routes and ensure safety becameeasier. OMBA also moved forward withother recommendations that ensure safetyand increased enjoyment of our trail features.Skills classes are offered before club meet-ings, some women-specific.

Besides simplified routes, we have provid-ed current maps and a progressive "skillsarea" to practice near the parking lot, andestablished the Ocala Bike Patrol.

This division of IMBA's NationalMountain Bike Patrol serves as ambassadorson the trail, providing direction, basic firstaid and rescue knowledge, as well as biketools. Look for the yellow and green jerseys!

Documenting volunteers and their hours"proves" the club's value. This year OMBAwill have contributed 2400 documentedhours to the Greenway Santos trails!

Having progressive, pro-active land man-agers makes riding and volunteering easy inOcala. (Personally, I wish it were so easywith road planners!)

On our last night,we dined al frescoin DeLand, thenambled into theCaffe da Vinci for ahigh-powered bluesset by the talentedsinger-songwriter

Magda Hiller. Standing at the back door,nearly glowing with pride, was her father,bicycle activist and travel writer Herb Hiller.

We didn't really make this trip for thefood, but our daily exercise doubled thepleasure found on our plates. We enjoyedour carbs without guilt, knowing we couldburn them off before another sunset.

My own rides ranged from eight to 34miles a day, but since individual abilities areconsidered in selecting routes, longer ridesare possible.

Most cyclists can ride farther than theythink, according to our instructor, FBA's pro-gram director, Lyndy Moore.

A "sag wagon" accompanied our excur-sions with fluids and energy food, andrespite for any rider needing a lift.

How different we all were andhow quick to become friends werea wonder to me. Your writer wasthe least-experienced rider on thistrip, but even the road-burninglong-distance riders and two rock-wise mountain bikers picked upuseful tips.

We all slept at the friendlyCassadaga Hotel, next to the cen-tury-old Southern CassadagaSpiritualist CampmeetingAssociation, and started each daywith tea or coffee in the homeylobby.

Our rooms were included in theall-inclusive fee of $845, and werequite adequate. However, if you'refussy about decor or your shower,either of the B&Bs or the Azalea Cottagecould offer nicer rooms— though you'll paymore. The other cost of comfort would beless time spent with your fellow riders.

Our great unexpected pleasure was acampfire talk by natural historian MikeBrothers, whose word pictures of how thesea formed the land around us helped usunderstand how precious is the natural lifebetween the mid-state ridge and the western

outreaches of Daytona Beach. We also learned how the meandering St.

Johns once brought hunters, planters andland speculators to the Florida interior, wheregreat schemes and dreams were hatched,tried and sometimes abandoned.

Today's dreamers have their own bigideas, and some would fill the open spacebetween river and Atlantic with new citiesand suburbs. Lake Helen's hospitable mayor,Mark Shuttleworth, was lamenting someone'seffort to hammer together 4,000 homes at theoutskirts of his growth-curbed city. We allcould be glad that we came first, and rodethe parks and roadsides in relative peace.

It's not that every mile was smooth rolling.This is part of Florida's hill country, after all,so working up a sweat didn't take long.

We rode almost entirely on streets or high-ways. Part of the point, after all, was todemonstrate that one doesn't need a bicyclepath for good riding. And if there were tensemoments when a motorist behaved badly orthe pavement was too narrow for comfort,we were quickly learning how to each takeresponsibility for our own safety and that offellow riders—things like verbal alerts fordebris on the road, hand signals for all turnsand slowdowns, and how pedaling at asteady pace, even downhill, can help preventa spill among riders behind.

These and many more are the parts of

safer bicycling, and safer roads forall travelers.

I'm already benefiting from fellowrider Lee Berger's demonstrationthat my thumbs are no match for atire gauge to tell whether my tireshave the 85 to 100 pounds of airneeded for easy pedaling, and FBApresident Mighk Wilson's seat-height adjustment, which hasmarkedly reduced the stress on myknees.

One of the dubious pleasures of living in apopular state is the notoriety. We eagerlysearch the lists that result from studies, sur-veys and polls to see whether our communi-ty has made the grade—or avoided the dis-paragement.

Well, ever-in-the-news Orlando climbedto the bottom rung of another top 10 list asone of America’s Worst Communities fortraffic rush hour delays. According toForbes.com, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA highway system leads thelist with 93 hours average annual delay.

This means in addition to however longthe normal commute time, LA-LB-SA com-muters waste more than two work weekssitting in traffic tie-ups.

Orlando commuters, number 10 on thelist, spend a mere extra 55 hours of delayper year due to accidents, bottlenecks, traincrossings and construction.

Source of the figures is the 2005 UrbanMobility Report, released in May of thatyear so the numbers really are a picture of2003 traffic. Back then the prognosis washigher than normal growth in congestion,traffic and delays compared to other largecities of between 1 and 3 million popula-tion.

So, Orlando, now you know how youstood—literally—in traffic three years ago.

Why do we bother mentioning thisancient history? Because Tim Lomax andDavid Schrank, who publish the report outof Texas A&M University(http://mobility.tamu.edu/ums/) took 2006off to refine their research methods. Theirnext UMS is due out this coming May.

We’ll all be eagerly waiting to seewhether Orlando—or any other of our traf-fic congested cities—makes the top 10 listagain.

“HEY DAD, what are we doing this week-end?” Megan and I asked. Dad—JimGlanz—responded, “Going on a bike ride!”

2002 found our family searching for activ-ities we could do together. We located theFlorida Freewheelers bicycle club and joinedthe Saturday social rides. That, indeed, iswhere it all began.

Megan and I alternated weekend rides onthe trailer bike pulled by dear old Dad. Aswe grew and became more experienced(about a year), Megan rode her single bikewhile I continued pushing Dad on the rides.

Soon, I was on my own bike and our cararrived at ride starts with a three-bike rackloaded with bikes.

In 2005, Megan got the racing bug andjoined the Orlando Road Club (ORC) tobegin training and learning skills needed forcompetition.

Her first race was in Sanford and eventhough she placed last this did not discour-age her. She continued to practice hard andended up placing 4th in both the FloridaPoint Series and the Florida Cup.

We were all very excited for her andhoarse from cheering during the race. Oneadvantage of a big sister being tired after arace: no energy remaining to pick on littlesister.

At age 11 Megan completed her first cen-tury at the Endless Summer Watermelon ridein September and rode many a mile with abiking buddy and mentor, Mr. Larry Gies.

He sang songs with Megan when the rid-ing got boring and that is SURE to motivateanyone to keep pedaling. Plus, it's alwaysbetter riding and learning from experiencedcyclists instead of Dad. Megan went on tocomplete her second century at the HorseFarm Hundred. We've both made some greatfriendships on the rides and enjoy our bicy-cle family. Miss Fairlie (Florida Free-wheeler president and a school teacher)always talks with us on the rides and keepsus motivated to do our best.

Mr. Mike at Mud, Sweat and Gears inOrange City keeps all our bikes mechanical-ly ready to ride or race and makes sureMegan has everything she needs for eachrace.

Miss Lyndy (FBA) always gives us safetytips and neat bike stuff and she has taught ushow to be safe and courteous riders. All ofthe ORC coaches have helped Megan train

and learn and have supported her every stepof the way to become a better racer.

We have many more adult friends thatencourage and support us and we both feelreally lucky to be a part of this group.

Megan has received a lot of moral supportand advice from fellow racer, MichelleBlake and her mother Miss Diane. Plus, theyhave fun together off the bike too!

We both participate with the Lake CountyPAL cycling team and encourage each otherand the new riders that show up. Meganalso can be found riding with the BOBbies,an all girls cycling group, and we also prac-tice on Thursdays with Colavita team.

Our dad helps other kids on the rides,because they will listen to him and not theirparents just like us!

Megan's fastest time trial average was19.6, so she really gives Dad a workout onthe rides they do together!!

As for me, I will start racing when the2007 season starts, and it will be fun for usall to compete with each other to help us allget better. When we're grown up, we'll rideon the front of a tandem and let Dad ride asthe stoker to pay him back for all the yearshe's pulled us around on the bikes. Andthen WE will be in charge.

No, I don't always say nice things aboutmy sister, we fight and argue just like allnormal sisters. I do admire her for racingand going after her dream and I am learningwhile I watch her so I can beat her whenwe're in the same class. So, look out sis, I'mon your wheel and waiting to pass.

Tiffany is a 9-year-old 4th grader atDiscovery Elementary School. Megan is 12and in 6th grade at Deltona Middle School.Jim Glanz is just Dad. At home taking care

of the rest of the family is, of course, themost important cheerleader, Mom.

Saturday, August 26 found 18 cyclists at theLake Helen Coffee and Tea Company sip-ping coffee, eating bagels and listing intent-ly.

Speaking were Lake Helen mayor MarkShuttleworth and FBA president MighkWilson.

After a brief welcome, the mayor coveredthe history and growth of Lake Helen andhow the bicycling program supports theLake Helen mindset.

Mighk then added the benefits of the loca-tion to the new FBA touring and trainingprogram.

He started the riders off with an overviewof the safety training that will be conductedon each tour.

With the trainees fed, motivated and excit-ed to get going, I gave an overview of theday and WHY we were taking the tour lead-ers on a tour….to see how the group dynam-ics will work.

The cyclists weren't really “trained,”rather, given background information on thearea, how the tours will work, the resourcesand partners making it happen, plans forfuture bike lanes and trails, where the localbike shop is located—all while getting toride.

Another reason for the gathering was toget pictures of key sites with cyclists—withthat in mind, we started out on a 30 mileroute, similar to what the touring cyclistswill experience.

We rode by city hall (the “classroom” forthe Road I class on Mondays); the newequestrian center; the Ann Stevens Bed andBreakfast (our Sunday evening orientationand dinner site) and; the Cassadaga Hotel

(the sleeping headquarters for the tours).Next we headed to a trail head and got anupdate on the trail coming through that areaof Volusia County.

These stops each had speakers so we rodeto them to gather information AND had anopportunity to check cell phone service tosee which communication method was mostreliable in the rural areas.

Next stop was Ed Stone Park along the StJohns River where we learned from SusanneInman, Volusia County Leisure Services,about the trails plan for the county and somewater options for our touring cyclists whoalso like to kayak or canoe.

At the new DeLand Cyclery, Joan Carterfrom FDOT met us to provide informationon FDOT plans, policies and the connectionsin the works for the area.

We took her with us to Stetson Universitywhere writer Herb Hiller met us and gave anupdate on touring in Florida, greenways andtrails, connections and how the discoverycenter fits eco-tourism.

The final leg was back to Blake Park inLake Helen where submarine sandwichesawaited some hungry cyclists.

We saw what needs to be included in thetour guide manual; met those interested inleading rides; saw how much the group splitup based on ride speeds/habits and gainedother knowledge useful for making the tourssuccessful vacations for our cycling guests.

And the participants were able to do whatwe all love to do on Saturday mornings: gofor a bike ride. Anyone interested in participating in futureride leader training, please email me [email protected].

Be prepared, as you approach these loca-tions, to brake and or swerve/turn to the right, if someone sneaks past your pre-vention measures.

You don't need to be fearful, just alert.Emergency braking (do you know how?)and/or a quick turn to the right (do youknow how?) can stop or steer you out of thepath of an illegally turning motorist. Boththese maneuvers are taught in the LAB RoadI Course.

Ride aware: know what is going onaround you and think what if? as you ride along—know what you will do if vari-ous, predictable things happen.

Be prepared: know how to do emergencybraking, and quick turns, as these two maneuvers can save you.

Ride safer by doing these things and yourcycling will be more confient and enjoyable.

Florida's bicycle clubs were very generous to FBA in 2006 over and abovetheir $100 membership dues. FBA appreciates all membership clubs, butwishes to recognize the following for their commitment to our association:

FBA also received $1667.00 in contributions from the United Way. If youcontribute to the United Way, you can designate FBA as your preferrednon-profit organization to receive funds.

A right hook occurs when a motorist passesa cyclist then brakes and turns sharply rightin front of the cyclist causing or almostcausing a collision.

Prevention starts with keeping aware ofintersections and driveways on your rightthat drivers may turn into.

Watch (with a rear view mirror) as youapproach these, and if you see a motoristcoming from the rear whose arrival timingmight put them in conflict with you, do twothings: 1) put your left arm out in a slow-ing/moving left signal (hand and armstraight, pointed down at about a 45 angle),then 2) move a foot or two to the left toemphasize your presence.

Motorists who are going to turn right willalmost always slow and go behind you, andthose who are going through the intersectionwill move left a little and pass you.

A successful partnership between SeidlerProductions, FDOT, TransportationTechnology (T2) and the Center forEducation and Research in Safety (CERS)has students donning helmets before gettingon their bike.

After a successful pilot program trackinghelmet use and increases in middle schools,FBA is adding elementary schools to theprogram.

We're especially interested in elementaryschools that will promote students into theparticipating middle schools.

The pilot program results showed that stu-dents wore their helmets more often, didn'tremove them when “out of sight” of theschool and wore them properly.

Since middle school students are VERYfocused on driving, it's important to empha-size that bicycles are vehicles and bicyclistsare drivers and follow the same rules asother drivers, though no license is needed.

One key fact that students remember, isthat if they get a ticket while on a bicycle(no helmet, running traffic control devices,wearing headsets, etc.) and they don't paythe fine, it will delay their getting a learner’spermit.

make them comply. But once they get usedto helmets, they find that riding and helmetsare just a way of life.

We've put helmets on heads of about 500students who could not afford helmets plusthe ones who have increased wearing with apurchase of helmets from local bike shopsand retailers.

Along with the helmets, students arebeing educated about bike and helmet safety.

While FBA's helmet program is no longergrant funded, we do have a “helmet angel”who has generously donated funds to help ushelp promote healthy kids through moreactivity.

Biking to school and for recreation canget students off the couch and out in thefresh air to exercise and burn calories.

Students biking to school also protect theenvironment by reducing emissions for shortcar trips and waiting in the parent pick upline at the school.
