From the Pastor’s Desk Pastor Detlev Vosgerau

"Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved." Matt 9:17 We have just passed another New Year and many of us have probably made some resolutions. Perhaps we have resolved to make important changes in our lives that are long overdue, or to perform tasks that we have been putting off. All too frequently though, the freshness of the New Year wears off quickly and we readily fail to make good on our resolutions or continue to put off certain things. This is often true in our spiritual new years and journey. Perhaps as we are approaching the season of Lent, we need to be reminded of wineskins and the lesson they teach us. The wineskins mentioned in the Bible were used to ferment new wine. They were made of some kind of animal hide, tanned and placed over a fire so that they could be sealed and softened. Then they were sewn up so that the new wine could be poured into them. When that was done they were sewn shut for a time, until the wine finished its fermentation and became good. No one who knew anything about making good wine would consider placing it in an old wineskin. For one thing old wineskins became hard and unyielding. They cracked easily and could not expand during the fermenting process like a new wineskin. To put new wine in an old wineskin would essentially be the same as pouring it down the drain because it would burst and both it and the wine would be ruined. What is the lesson here you ask? Well, sometimes you have to let go of the old in order to embrace the new. Lent calls us to repentance. It’s a time for us to wake up to all the old wine skins we keep and yet expect them to hold the wonderful new things from God.

Page 3: MESSENGER...Anthony and Regina Helbig for providing the stage. Neville and Chris Mibus for providing the trailer to transport the tree and stage. Trevor Materne- providing the Christmas

The message of Jesus was that new life comes out of death.

If we want to have the new life just maybe something of the old has to give way

and die?

Sometimes we pray that God will do new things in our lives.

I am sure our motives are sincere and we know that we are in need of something

fresh and life changing. Yet, it seems as though things stay the same and we

become almost feeble in our spiritual lives and walk with Jesus.

Perhaps there is something old in our lives that can’t hold the new wine; an

attitude, a misplaced faith, an unforgiving heart?

In our longing for something fresh from God we would do well to look over our

lives and our attitudes.

In his love for us in Jesus, we are free to acknowledge what is old, cracked and

not even capable of holding God’s grace.

We know that God will not withhold pouring his grace and Spirit into our lives.

The issue might just be that we can’t hold what is being poured in!

As a God’s children seeking a revitalised faith and life in Jesus, let us use this

Lenten season to examine and perhaps discover which old attitudes, faith and

behaviour cannot hold the new fresh wine of God’s grace.

Let us not only seek for God’s gracious outpouring on our lives and work,

but also to be new vessels of his grace.

A people who are fresh and refreshed.

Parish Notes Now you are the body of

Christ, and each one of you

is a part of it. 1 Cor 12:27

Parish AGM was held on 26th January. Pastor provided an opening devotion on “What are you worth?” and he also shared prayer.

Copies of the 2019 Parish AGM Minutes will be at each church, to be adopted at the next Parish Council meeting in March. Please take a copy and read through.

A few points of discussion…

Parish Council have been progressing with updating the Parish Constitution and are grateful for the advice and direction from Margaret Koch as she is on the LCA Standing Committee on Constitutions.

The Parish Ash Wednesday service offering will support Australian Lutheran College.

The Youth Group is now under the umbrella of St Peter’s Greenock. It was decided to continue to forward the offering from the Parish Palm Sunday service in support of Youth activities.

The Tanunda Lutheran Home visit in August has been capably organised by Helen Wendt, with sincere thanks. She is unable to continue in this role, so the meeting asked if the Ladies’ Fellowship could take up this Parish outreach event which is very much appreciated by the TLH community. Discussion at the ladies’ planning meeting on 28th January.

The final service led by Pastor Detlev Vosgerau in our Parish will be on 26th July at Greenock, followed by a luncheon in the hall. Retirement is just around the corner! Parish Chairman Geoff Saegenschnitter will liaise with District Office re the Call process. Please continue to pray for Pastor and Phyllis as they enter the home stretch after many years of faithful service. May God bless them and keep them in His care.

Elections: Whilst Geoff Saegenschnitter was returned as Chairman, the Parish still has vacancies for Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Rhonda Schild stepped down as Vice-Chair after many years and the Parish thanks her for her service. Margaret Koch has been assisting Parish Council as minute secretary and would be more than happy to mentor someone in the Secretary role – a wealth of experience on offer. Peter Neldner wants to hand over the Treasurer role and he too would mentor a person to step into a well organised system for which the Parish is very thankful.

CAN YOU HELP? Please give prayerful consideration about any of these roles and raise your hand to fill a position. PLEASE! Contact Geoff Saegenschnitter.

Page 5: MESSENGER...Anthony and Regina Helbig for providing the stage. Neville and Chris Mibus for providing the trailer to transport the tree and stage. Trevor Materne- providing the Christmas

Annual Leave: Pastor Detlev will be on Annual Leave from 28th January through to 23rd February 2020 inclusive. In case of an emergency, please contact one of your elders for assistance.

AGMs: To work with Pastor Detlev and his Annual Leave, please note dates for congregation AGMs: Greenock 1st March after 10.30am service; Gnadenfrei 8th March after 10.30am service and pooled lunch; Nain 15th March after 10.30am service.

Harvest Thanks: Once again to work with Pastor Detlev and his Annual Leave, dates for Harvest Thanksgiving services are: Nain 1st March at 9.00am preaching service; Greenock 8th March at 9.00am preaching service; Gnadenfrei Marananga 29th March at Whistler Wines beginning with a 9.00am preaching service.

For five Wednesdays during Lent (4th March to 1st April, 7.30pm at Greenock each time) Pastor will be presenting “Ordering Our Community - The 5 Key Areas of Mission and Ministry”. From the introduction … At all times it must be remembered that it is God who has called us to be His people. He has made us who we are. Our identity as Christians is a gift. It is a product of grace … Church organization and structures must be seen not as a fixed ‘it has to be this way’, but as a means of serving the mission and ministry of God’s people within our community and location. All welcome!

Blazeaid volunteers leave their home for months and travel to areas severely hit by fires to help with fencing, etc. They are provided with morning and afternoon smoke’o, a packed lunch and a community tea.

How can we, as a Christian family and community help? We are looking for generous people who can make (or donate) biscuits, slices, boiled fruit cake or any cakes that can be (or are) frozen. These can be brought after 5.00pm to Enis and Geoff Saegenschnitter’s home, Branson Road, Greenock. If preferred they can be brought to church and someone can deliver them when needed. Enis will be delivering the goods to the Blazeaid camp at Lobethal every 2 weeks (started 20th January). Thanks to everyone for their assistance to date – good response.

This is an important venture, not all home owners affected by fire can recover without help. Blazeaid helps when needed, we in turn are called to help Blazeaid.

HELP NEEDED: “Walk My Way Barossa 2020” is seeking volunteers on Saturday 2nd May from Barossa Churches to assist with any of the following to support a new Walk My Way event being held in the Barossa Valley… Trail marshalls, Breakfast helpers, Carpark attendants, First Aid officials, Drink Stop helpers, Registration helpers, Sweepers (final walkers) and Finish line cheer squad! The event will start at Redeemer Lutheran School (Nuriootpa) and conclude at St Jakobi School (Lyndoch) – 26km trek. So if you can’t walk but can volunteer with any of the activities listed in this notice, then please pass your name on to Pastor Detlev.

Professional Standards: If you have any queries regarding involvement and requirements, please contact Carol Kalleske at Greenock and Sally Pfeiffer at Gnadenfrei Marananga. There is a Co-ordinator Network Meeting at the LLL in North Adelaide on Saturday 21st March from 1.00-4.00pm.

St. Peter’s Greenock News

By Ali Barkley

“Sharing the Love of Jesus and Building a Caring Christian Community”

Christmas may have come and gone for another year, but the impact of Christmas never leaves us. We live in the light of Christmas every day because God gave a Saviour to the world, to grow with us, walk alongside us, cry and rejoice with us and to forgive us when we fall short. We can be so thankful for the gift of Jesus, for He is a gift that keeps on giving. “Freedom from Fear...You Are Here so it is Well”, was presented on Christmas Eve and it was truly wonderful to see the church so full,

in particular with so many visitors. Christmas Eve is a special mission opportunity for us as a church to witness to our community, to share the love of Jesus with them and give them a voice of hope. It wouldn’t be possible without the love and help of so many, and I truly can’t thank everyone enough who played a part in the evening, for all that you did. Thank you so much to... Pastor Detlev. JAM Children for learning their parts and delivering the message so capably. JAM Teachers and helpers- Ali Barkley, Michelle Mickan, Paula Menzel, Amie Kalleske, Amy McDonald, Tania Kalleske, Sarah Mibus, Kylie Lindner. John Barkley – for PowerPoint creation, prop construction, video creator, sound operator. Anthony Mickan, Eleanor Heinrich and Henry Wendt (pictured) for their willingness to share their personal story of a time when they were afraid- for their vulnerability and powerful witness. Henry Barkley, Jack Mickan, Isaac Barkley and John Barkley- multimedia and sound on the night. Peter Rawlings, Kym Kalleske, Don Helbig and John Barkley for setting up the stage and erecting Christmas tree.

Lyn Hoffmann and Lyn Waldhuter for organising the lollies for the children. Redeemer Lutheran School for allowing us to use their drama blocks. Nick Filsell for the loan of microphones. Paula Menzel and Kylie Lindner for the beautiful take home. Amy McDonald for buying and wrapping the children’s Christmas gifts.

Kylie Rosenzweig for her photography on the night. Mark Kalleske and the team of ushers who helped with seating and directing visitors. Heather Obst, Emily Mibus, Neale and Ariel Heinrich for providing the music. Members who sat in the chat room to allow visitors to have priority seating in the church. Everyone’s prayers.

...and to anyone I’ve missed 😉 – Thank you!

JAM- Commences for 2020 on Sunday 2nd February at 9.45am. Please see Ali if your child is kindy age and above and would like to join. Please notify Ali if any of your contact details or if your child’s medical history has changed. We thank Amie Kalleske who has helped us in JAM last year but is now taking a reprieve and we warmly welcome and thank Kylie Lindner for her offer of help and service.

GREENOCK AGM- Will be held on Sunday 1st March after the 10.30 am service.

Please prayerfully consider how you’re able to serve our church. We sincerely thank

Trevor Waldhuter for his many years of service as Chairperson

and Peter Rawlings as Vice Chairperson. They have both served

faithfully and we have all been blessed for their contribution.

We have these two vacancies to fill and we will be looking at

our new Ministry Model to hopefully adopt and put in place for

2021. Pastor Detlev has been preparing church council/ministry

team for this and will continue to share this with congregational

members when he returns from leave.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING SERVICE- This will be held on Sunday 8th March – 9.00am.

We would appreciate donations of produce and non- perishable foods, which at this stage

will be donated to Australian Lutheran College.

INDONESIAN VISITORS- Just after the last Messenger was released (hence wasn’t included),

we had the privilege of some special Indonesian visitors

from Pastor Detlev’s previous parish at Para Vista come

and share worship with us. Their singing and music was

truly spirit filled and we loved the passion and joy they

showed in sharing their faith through song. They treated

us to a wonderful performance using their hand made

Angklung (bamboo instrument). It was beautiful to listen

to. They played Happy Birthday and we sang to Wifrieda

Kalleske and the JAM kids loved it! Thanks to Pastor

Detlev and Phyllis for organising this visit.

Nain Notes Nain AGM will be held on 15th March after the 10.30am service. The Church Council will be presenting the draft Constitution for the Nain Congregation to adopt. Copies available at the Church. Your attendance at the AGM is vital for the Constitution to be passed as we need a quorum. Harvest Thanksgiving will be on 1st March at the 9.00am Preaching service. Our ALC Student Joseph Theodorsen has commenced his vicarage at St Mark’s Mount Barker under the leadership of Pastor Ben Pfeiffer. Our prayers and thoughts are with Joseph and his family at this time. He hopes to visit Nain again sometime after Easter.

Gnadenfrei Marananga Notes

Marananga Carols Evening at the church grounds was once again a time of friendship and community spirit. People gathered at the hall for a sausage sizzle (with thanks to many people behind the scenes, especially Jenny Neldner, Sally Pfeiffer) before the programme was presented in the church, capably organised by Marianne Kroschel, to whom Gnadenfrei extends its sincere thanks (also to Peter Neldner on sound). MC’s were Grant and Cathy Wills. Pastor Detlev shared a Christmas message. Marananga Brass Band personnel provided music for carol singing. Lively special guest Steve Angel entertained with several items. The Gnadenfrei Singers, with Alicia Kroschel on keyboard, brought more joy to the evening. A delicious supper and cuppa concluded another festive occasion.

Christmas at Gnadenfrei was a truly joyful time. It was wonderful to have many new faces at the tree decorating and setting up the historic nativity scene. For Christmas Eve, Grant and Cathy Wills led the service of readings and carols – a time for reflection and open praise for the gift that is Jesus. It’s always nice to welcome familiar faces to this service as families come together to share this special time. Gnadenfrei hosted the Parish Christmas Day service and it was a full house hearing the Good News of our Saviour’s birth! Special thanks to Pastor Detlev Vosgerau for leading an inspiring and hope-filled service.

AGM for Gnadenfrei is set for Sunday 8th March following the 10.30am service and a pooled lunch. Let’s come together for fellowship and serve where called.

Harvest Thanksgiving will be at Whistler Wines on Sunday 29th March, beginning with a 9.00am service with Pastor Detlev. Please bring along produce and non-perishable goods for families at Australian Lutheran College. Offering on the day will also be sent to ALC. Let’s give our thanks and praise to God our provider.

Maitland Congregation is coming to visit Gnadenfrei on Sunday 24th May. Our congregation visited them in Aug 2018 and now it is our turn to host them.

‘Mixed Blessings’ is available by contacting church members. Nine varieties in this excellent 2016 red blend wine.
