Ministry NotesOhana Youth Week Aug. 4-11

    By Rev. Hank Jenkins

n the Disney animated movie, Lilo and Stitch, there is a wonderful scene where the main character, Lilo, is reciting the definition of the Hawaiian word Ohana to her older sister and care-taker. In her definition she says, Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. This understanding of family is one that the youth group here at Missouri United Methodist has decided to embrace as the theme for Youth Week 2015, which will take place August 4-11.

Youth Week is an annual youth event at Missouri United Methodist Church that marks the ending of the summer break from school and allows one more chance at fun and freedom before the start of classes in the fall. This event has typically taken place the week before classes start in the Columbia Public School district. We are actually moving the date up a week this year in order to accommodate our students who attend the Southern Boone County School District and start a week earlier. As always, youth week is a time for our youth to gather in fun and fellowship and increase the bonds we all share in our love for one another and Jesus Christ.

We will kick off youth week by joining the rest of the church at an All-Church/Community BBQ and Movie Night on Tuesday, August 4. THE WHOLE CHURCH is invited to join together as a family at 4 p.m. for a time of food, fun and games, as we cook hot dogs and hamburgers, have bounce houses and other games, as well as a dunk tank. More importantly this will be a time to come together and share in laughter with our whole church family. After the outdoor festivities, we will go upstairs to the MPR to watch a movie together. Because we acknowledge that we are a part of a larger Christian and denominational family, on Thursday, Aug. 6, the youth will begin two days of mission work at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church here in Columbia. From 9-11 a.m. on that Thursday, we will be working with Wilkes to clean up and do yard work around the outside of their church building and on Sunday, Aug 9, we will work inside their sanctuary from 1-3 p.m. to polish and clean pews, as well as other parts of their facility.

On Friday, Aug. 7, we will travel together as a youth family to Big Surf Water Park in the Lake of the Ozarks region for a day of water fun. We will meet at the church at 8 a.m. that day and travel together and return about 6 p.m. that evening. The cost of this event is $20 per person and as always, please bring a friend with you.

We will follow a day at the water park up with a day at the baseball park on Monday, August 10 as we travel to Kansas City to watch the Royals take on the Detroit Tigers. We have 25 tickets reserved for youth going into 6th grade through 12th grade at a cost of $10 per person. Once again, friends are invited to come. We will be leaving the church around 3 p.m. and will be home around midnight.

Youth Week 2015 will come to a wrap on Tuesday, August 11, with a backyard party at the home of Corey and Anna Zacherl. Once again we will have food, games and worship for the youth as we come together for a final day of fun as a family before we begin our school years. Please look for our registration and make sure to sign up for all events you would like to attend and if you are an adult who would like to help out in these activities, please contact Rev. Hank Jenkins at [email protected] or 573-443-3111.

This is a time of wonderful fun, mission and worship and we look forward to drawing together as a family and showing our Ohana to each other.

    Rev. Hank Jenkins
