TOP TIPS ON HOW TO STUDY AT UNI WHILE AT HIGH SCHOOLSenior high school students in the Moreton Bay Region wanting an early start to their local university journey can get face-to-face advice from USC Moreton Bay staff and students on Tuesday 17 March.

The University will host an information evening about its Headstart program for Year 11 and 12 students on campus at 1 Moreton Parade, Petrie from 4.30pm to 6pm.

USC Schools Relationship Officer Kirsty Jarrett, who is based at USC Moreton Bay, said the free event would include a tour of the newly opened campus and talks for school students and their parents.

“High school students can choose from more than 30 first-year subjects at USC Moreton Bay, which will give them credit towards their Queensland Certificate of Education while working towards a degree,” she said. “There is no tuition fee for the first subject.”

Eighteen-year-old Kiah Vescovi, who will be speaking on the night, is a Northpine Christian College graduate who is now in the second year of a USC Bachelor of Paramedic Science.

The Beachmere resident completed two Headstart courses at USC Sunshine Coast in 2017, when she was in Year 11.

“ I s tud ied the in t roductory subject Communication and Thought, which every USC student is required to complete, and that assisted me in writing essays and locating credible sources for reports,” she said.

“My second subject was about behavioural health and how the human mind develops. My tutor was so enthusiastic, it helped me understand the growth and psychology of people and other concepts I still reflect upon in my daily life.”

Kiah said Headstart showed her the level of independence students had at university.

“It's called self-directed learning,” she said. “I learned how to manage my time wisely by creating weekly goals, and how to find resources if I needed help.”

Completing Headstart also put her ahead in subjects for her degree, which she was accepted into before finishing school after receiving a USC Early Offer Guarantee.

“I love my degree because I get to learn about the human body and practise with heaps of cool equipment,” she said.

“The Paramedic Science labs are awesome. I get to practise my clinical skills with manikins, a simulated ambulance, lifelike blood, needles and heaps more. Most of all, I have a passion for helping people and after my first placement working inside a real ambulance, I knew that this is where I want to be when I graduate.”

USC's Headstart Information Evening will provide details on the application process, eligibility, costs, scholarships, available courses and university entry options.

On Sunday the Save North Lakes Golf Course committee took their pop up stall down to the 5km Colour Frenzy run in North Lakes.

Many locals turned up to the event and got the chance to say hi to the team, as well as get a photo with their friendly koala.

SNLGC were talking with the community about the protection of the North Lakes Golf Course for the sake of our wildlife and community. “NO Development on the North Lakes Golf Course - EVER!”

“Be confident North Lakes. Save North Lakes Golf Course (SNLGC) is working tirelessly behind the scenes to save 100% of our open green space from ANY development. Join Us” says the committee

“We are fielding many enquires regarding the upcoming local government election. SNLGC is a non-political entity that enjoys bipartisan support... that being said, the upcoming local and state elections are of critical importance; our candidates and newly elected representatives need to appreciate their fundamental role in protecting the interests of the community (as opposed to developer donors). Please be informed before you vote!

The current toilet paper shortage, also known as Toilet Paper Gate, has the potential to cause havoc in private plumbing.

The panic-buying of the three-ply due to the Coronavirus has left some resorting to using wet wipes instead.

Unitywater is urging the community not to flush anything other than the Three Ps down the toilet – pee, poo and toilet paper.

“We don't mind what you wipe with, but if it's not toilet paper, please ensure you put it in the bin,” Uni tywater Execut ive Manager Customer Delivery Rhett Duncan said.

“We've heard of people cutting up old clothes or using newspaper, and while this might 'do the job', if you flush them down the toilet, you could cause blockages or sewage overflows in your home. Not only are these unpleasant, but can be expensive for homeowners to fix.

“Similarly, wet wipes, paper towels and tissues can create fatbergs or blockages when flushed and even if they say 'flushable', they don't break down like toilet paper does. Please ensure they go in the bin.”

Mr Duncan said flushing items other than the Three Ps could also cause issues in the wider sewerage system.

“Unfortunately, we have to deal with blockages which not only damage our infrastructure and impact how it operates, but it also means we have to divert our crews from other important jobs across our systems.”More information: www.unitywater.com/wetwipesarerubbish

CATCH LEONIE’S RADIO SHOW ALTERNATE MONDAYS AT 11AM ON 99.7 BRIDGE FM

North Lakes Counselling Services

Cate, it sounds like there is an awful lot of chest banging going on in your house with this entire “You love him more than me” caper. By buying into this emotional blackmail you are running around trying to please everyone and knocking yourself out.

Well if we put my counsellor hat on we can talk about boundaries, being a victim, teaching your family how to treat you and being proactive about change. We would look at strategies to turn the behaviour of the people, including yourself in the family around and ultimately I would give you homework with specific ideas for you to employ and perhaps commence family therapy.

But you asked me what I would do if I found myself in your nightmare and here it is. I would call a family meeting and outline the things that will be negotiable and the things that won't. I would inform the men in my life that now they are adults, that they have just as much responsibility to look after me as I have to look after them.

I would tell them that I love them all and if they don't believe this, there is nothing I can do about it so end of story. I would sit down with a white board and equally distribute the domestic chores among the five of us and explain that I am happy to wash whatever is in the laundry and is ready to go but that I would not be responsible for when it is washed and they can do their own ironing.

I would tell my sons that I will be running very interactive workshops in the laundry that clearly explains how the big white box with knobs on it works and that there will be exciting one on one demonstrations on how to hand wash delicates, use pegs and load the dryer. I would tell them that if they knocked on the toilet or shower door when I am in there that one of them had better be on fire!I would have a good hard look at the finances in the house. It's one thing to pay all the bills if our children are struggling or studying but it's quite another matter if you are paying for everything and they are dropping bundles of money on their social life and hi tech stuff. I wouldn't be paying for their lifestyle and if you are paying for their accommodation and meals as well as being a live-in maid so that they have money to whistle away, that's exactly what you are doing. If my sons all had secure well paying jobs I would tell them that they each will be paying me $100 per week board and ¼ of all the utility bills. Cate, I believe very strongly that we teach people how to treat us and in my view you are teaching your sons that you are ok with being treated as a doormat. Your boys may be very loving men and care for you deeply but you have set the standard in the house and now a new standard must be set. If we keep doing the same thing, we keep getting the same results. Tomorrow is a new day. Is it going to play out exactly the same as yesterday or are you going to stand-up for yourself?

Hello Leonie,

I am at my wits end. I work full time and have three grown sons who live with me and my husband.

The boys all work and have good jobs. Each of my sons feels that one of the others is my favourite and my husband says that he comes after all three of the boys. I am away from home for ten hours a day including travel time and the second I get in the door all four of them are at me. I hear what's for tea, where's my shirt, is the ironing done, there is no milk, did you pick up this or that and on it goes. I work with a group of truly awful people who make work a rotten place to be but I need to stay to meet commitments.

The boys pay me no rent but they do buy all their personal products. I feel like I'm either at work, doing laundry, cooking or otherwise chasing my tail. Last night, I sat in the toilet just to get away from everyone and you guessed it, my husband came banging on the door asking about something. I have three toilets in my house and I just tried to hide in one.

Help! I'm going to have a nervous breakdown. What would you do if this was your nightmare? Cate/Rothwell

‘till next week. Leonie

CHILD RESTRAINT FAILURE A TICKING TIME BOMB: RACQ RACQ has issued a dire warning to parents and caregivers who own a Joie i-Travvel child restraint after it catastrophically failed a safety test by the Child Restraint Evaluation Program (CREP) and given the lowest possible one-star rating. The convertible child seat almost completely failed the test in the forward-facing position after the crash test child dummy was catapulted out of the restraint upon impact. RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Steve Spalding said the manufacturer was aware of the problems found during testing and had strengthened the device in November 2019, but earlier models had not been removed from sale or recalled. "Our biggest concern is the safety of young children in this child seat and urgent action must be taken now to alert parents to the ticking time bomb they have in their car," Mr Spalding said. "In its rear-facing mode, the child restraint offers four-star protection but during its forward-facing test, in Isofix mode, the restraint straps sheared away from the casing causing the child dummy to be ejected. This is the first time since CREP began evaluating child restraints in 1992 that this has ever occurred." Mr Spalding said the restraint failed the test with deadly consequences and parents should have no faith the restraint will protect their young child in a serious crash. "Our advice to anyone who has one of these restraints is to replace it, and if you're

considering purchasing this product, ask the retailer if it has been manufactured after November last year," he said.

"While the manufacturer has upgraded the restraint, we urge retailers to check and remove any older stock to avoid parents buying such a poor performing product."

RACQ is a partner of the Child Restraint Evaluation Program which exists to help consumers make safer child restraint choices.

THE POWER OF THE PONYTAIL SPREADSACROSS AUSTRALIA Cancer Council Queensland's fundraising campaign, the Ponytail Project, has kicked off for 2020, and this year is its biggest yet.

From humble beginnings as a school fundraiser in 2015 held by students at St Margaret's school, the campaign was quickly adopted by students across Queensland, and now the movement is chopping ponytails nation-wide.

Students in Western Australia and South Australia are now able to rock the chop in 2020, with their respective Cancer Council organisations putting their hand up to help the students make a difference.

Raising over $450,000 in its lifespan, the Ponytail Project invites students to grow their hair, then chop it off to raise funds to support those impacted by cancer through research, prevention programs, and support services.

Ponytail Project 2020 ambassador Quinn Venz said rocking the chop in 2019 was a special experience.

“I signed up to the Ponytail Project because I've seen first-hand how devastating cancer can be for a person and their friends and family,” Ms Venz said.

“When I learned the Ponytail Project was all about celebrating bravery and raising money for those impacted by cancer, it was really just a matter of convincing my mum to let me cut my hair!

“I originally planned to rock the chop by myself, until the Ponytail Project team suggested getting my school involved.

“From there, over 75 students and a few teachers participated, the whole school got behind us, and we raised over $25,000!

“It became so much bigger than I imagined, the atmosphere was truly amazing, and I was so proud of my peers for helping me make a difference.”

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said the Ponytail Project is a great way for students to learn about cancer and

create positive change for those experiencing it.

“Not only does the Ponytail Project provide a way for students to raise funds for the work of Cancer Council Queensland,” Ms McMillan said.

“The Ponytail Project also gives students the opportunity to learn about the impacts of cancer, including ways to reduce their own cancer risk through making healthy lifestyle choices from early on in life.

“We encourage more teens and more schools to come on board, rock the chop and help us get closer to a cancer free future.”

OFFICIALLY OPEN: NORTH BRISBANE'S NEW WORLD-CLASS AUTISM HUB Brisbane's northside is now home to a world-class autism hub, with up to 50 local children benefitting from life-changing therapy and care at the new AEIOU Pine Rivers Autism Centre for Excellence, with an official opening celebration at the centre on Friday 6 March, at 10.30am.

AEIOU Chair Susan Rix AM said local families could now access appropriate support in a purpose-built centre designed with the needs of young children with autism at its heart.

"This centre replaces a much smaller, aging facility in Bray Park where local families experienced long delays to gain access to our service. We've nearly doubled our capacity in Bald Hills, in a centre that also offers a warm, naturalistic and inviting setting for the young children we care for.

"We are delighted today to be able to provide the people who brought this project to life, our partners and supporters, with the opportunity to tour the premises and see first-hand the impact it has on the lives of 47 children who are now benefiting from the facility, backed by a team of highly qualified staff.

"Early intervention is life-changing. At AEIOU, our team supports children to overcome challenges and learn vital life skills, while celebrating each child's unique qualities and the benefits of neuro-diversity within our community," Ms Rix said.

Made possible with $4.5 million in fund ing f rom the Aust ra l ian Government and a peppercorn lease from the Anglican Schools Commission, the state-of-the-art centre features four well-appointed activity rooms, therapy rooms, motor skills rooms and two state-of-the-art playgrounds. It will also facilitate training, outreach services and research programs.

The Hon. Luke Howarth MP said he was incredibly proud that the Australian Government had been part of such an important project. "Chi ldren wi th aut ism are a fundamental part of our community; hubs like this will allow them to best utilise their immense potential.

" T h e c h i l d re n w h o a re educated and the families that are supported at the centre will see the full nurturing that should, and now can, be expected.

"I also want to particularly extend my thanks to the Member for Dickson, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, as without his support the Hub would not have become a reality," Mr Howarth said.

A E I O U C E O A l a n S m i t h commended the Australian Government for investing in the futures of young children with autism, and recognised the generosity of the Anglican Schools Commission.

"This demonstrates a great commitment to young families, and the community. The early years of an autism diagnosis can be among some of the most challenging, and AEIOU is here to provide unrivalled support during that time." Mr Smith said.

Located at Attunga Street, Bald Hills and operated by AEIOU Foundation, the land has been gifted by the Anglican Schools Commission. Designed by Buchan Architects, the Hub w a s c o n s t r u c t e d b y Hutchinson Builders.
