4 June 2019 The Messenger

Can you believe it’s June? Well, I can’t believe and yet, I’m glad it is because I love the summer! Well, as we move into the summer, I wanted to provide you with some updated information at Messiah.

First, I want to keep you informed of my health. I am doing well and continue getting stronger. My recovery from surgery has taken longer than I anticipated, and I will need more time to fully recover. Most importantly, the surgery re-moved the cancer and according to my bloodwork, I am cancer-free. I have a follow-up blood test scheduled in July for ongoing monitoring. Meme and I are

thankful for your loving and prayerful support and we remain hopefully optimistic for the future.

Secondly, this summer we have another loaded schedule at Messiah. June includes VBS, Confirma-tion Camp, and a Local Mission Trip. July entails our annual Rock N Praise Block Party. Please note that on Sunday, July 14th, we will only have one service at 10:00 AM. And if you blink, it will be Au-gust, and students will be returning to school! Also, we will have Messiah Outreach Day scheduled on Saturday, August 17th.

Thirdly, in terms of Messiah’s ministry vision (viewable on the last inside page), we have a great deal going on. Regarding families with young children, the Preschool & Childcare is starting a stra-tegic planning for growth and sustainability with True North Strategic Advisors, LLC. Forever Young continues to plan a variety of educational experiences (CPR training in August) and is exploring possible bus trip excursions. Finally, Messiah Emerging Adult Ministry – MEAM (formerly known as Singles and Starters) is in the process of planning several significant events, including the develop-ment of an ongoing weekly gathering, a fall speaker series at PFW, and educational opportunities for the congregation.

Last, but not least, Messiah’s hospitality atmosphere and facility master plan are top priorities this summer. For hospitality, as a result of a strong recommendation from our consultant at Faith Per-ceptions, we will be making some upgrades to the Narthex/Lobby area during the summer. In re-gard to the master facility plan, a Capital Campaign team is being formed to lead Messiah in the prayerful planning of generosity for the future. Also, we have currently collected over $100k of the $150k needed for roof repairs! This is amazing grace, so thank you for your ongoing gifts to-wards this effort. While we remain prayerful that Messiah will respond beyond this immediate need for the future of our building, we will be prepared to move forward with the roof in 2020 once we’ve raised the final $50k.

That is a lot of information, but it is vital information to convey about Messiah. Cleary, ministry does NOT slow down for the summer. If you have concerns or questions, please feel free to make an appointment with me and I’d be glad to address topics further.

Thanks again for your love to my family and me, your supportive participation at Messiah, and your devotion to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Peace, PT

The Messenger June 2019 5

Summer Praise

Easter Season, the Great Fifty Days in which we celebrate Je-sus’ resurrection from the dead, is almost over. And yet our song of resurrection goes on, for when we gather on the Lord’s Day, we are reminded that it is the day that Christ rose and is alive with us each and every day, inviting us to follow him and share the good news with those we meet.

So this month is one of transition from Easter to the long, green season of Ordinary Time that takes us all the way to November. And as we enter into our summer activities of Vacation Bible School, Confirmation Camp, Youth Mission Trip, weddings, and summer vacations, we claim the promise of the Spirit to guide us in our mission.

Two special Sundays are coming up:

June 9, Pentecost. We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early church and give thanks for the Spirit’s presence in our daily lives. On this day we also recognize those from Messiah who are graduating from high school and college.

June 16, Holy Trinity Sunday. In the trinitarian God we experience God’s love in creation, redemption, and sanctification, and we give thanks for God’s gracious care for us and all creation.

You are invited. . . During the relaxing days of summer the Sanctuary Choir takes a break from rehearsals, but we still have the heart and will to praise God in song. So on the first four Sundays of this month we invite all who would like to sing to come to the Community Room (Room 4) at 8:30 a.m. for a brief re-hearsal of an anthem for the 9:00 a.m. service. Singers of Middle School age through adults are welcome. Questions? Give me a call at the church (485-8716) or email me at [email protected].

Soli Deo gloria! Glory be to God alone!

For Messiah’s ministry of worship and music,

Stan Engle

CARE & NURTURE

From the Parish Nurses…

Ah – the good old days of summer (hopefully coming sometime soon)…sunshine, fresh air and many opportunities to eat in the great outdoors. Here are some things to remember when enjoying the family reunion at the park, tailgating at the baseball game, or floating down the river in your kayak eating your lunch.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease and Control), every year 1 in 6 Americans gets sick after consuming a contaminated food or beverage.

These illnesses are largely preventable with proper food safety. Potlucks seem to be a main culprit – foods sit out for extended periods of time at the wrong temperature, and a dish is easily contaminated when someone grabs a serving with their hands or double-dipping.

Wash, wash, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 40 seconds before and after handling food.

Keep cold foods cold. Place cold food in a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Meat, poul-try and seafood may be packed frozen to keep them cold longer. Keep the cooler closed – use another cooler to keep drinks in as it will get opened and closed more often lowering the temperature.

Don’t cross-contaminate foods. Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood securely wrapped to keep their juices from contaminating other foods.

Clean your produce well under running tap water before packing them in the cooler – even the ones with skins or rinds that are not eaten.

Before you begin your outdoor feast – make sure your hands and surfaces are clean. If you have no running water, use a water jug, some soap and paper towels. You could also use disposable, moist towelettes. Clean the area where food will be served and eaten. Keep all platters, bowls, and serving utensils clean when preparing and serving food.

This would probably be a good time to tell you to stay away from the Same Old Plate – do not put cooked food (from the grill) on the same plate that held the raw food unless it has been thoroughly washed in hot soapy water first. While on the subject of plates, encour-age the use of a clean plate for second helpings as the serving spoon may touch the used plate and then be put back into the serving piece. Ick!

Summertime Giving!

Summertime is fun and the living is easy, but often the giving is not. Summer attendance and offering contributions often drop significantly in our congregation. This is because of vacation travel, lake life, sports schedules, and other activities that keep members away from worship. If you would like to make your giving easy and consistent this summer, please consider our electronic giving options. Many of our members are already using this simple and secure way to make and track their giving. If you would like to learn more, please contact Cory Dold in the church office or check out our website at www.messiahlc.com and click on the Giving Button!

NEW Photo Directory!

It’s time! It’s time for us to update our photo directory. Sign up at church, or online at messiahlc.com/directory. We will be photographing all families July 23-27 right here at Messiah. You’re invited to be a part of our new photo directory. Our last directory was printed in 2012. As you look around you today, you will see that we have new families, there have been weddings, and babies, and kids who are young adults now. We’re chang-ing, and a new photo directory will help us capture these changes. Our directory won’t be complete without you!

Messiah Logo Items

For Sale! We have several Messiah Logo items for sale. This is a great opportunity to raise money for our roof and building fund and provide excellent exposure for Messiah in the process. See Kelsey Matthias with questions or if you would like to purchase yours TO-DAY!

Stock Gifts to Messiah

Did you know that you can gift shares of stock to Messiah? Do you own a security that has gone up in value, but you don’t want to sell it because of the taxes you would pay? If so, then you may want to consider donating the shares to the church. If an individual do-nates securities held longer than a year to the church, then he or she can claim as a chari-table gift the fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift. Messiah will then sell the stock and not pay capital gains tax as a result of being a qualified public charity. It’s a win-win situation. Please contact the church office for Steve Van Wyngarden for more in-formation.

A Note of Thanks

We wish to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, kindness, and support shown to John and our family over the past few months. We are thankful for your encouraging, uplifting, and supportive cards, visits, emails, kind words, and prayers. John received weekly PALS prayer cards that were the source of much comfort and strength to him and to our family. Many people were involved in honoring John through serving in various roles at the visitation and funeral service, for which we are grateful. We also appreciate those who planned, provided, and served food for the incredibly generous funeral dinner. Special thanks to Pastor Tim for the pastoral care he provided to John and our family through his weekly visits and sharing of Hoy Communion. Support, care, and prayers from Messiah have truly made a difference during this difficult time. We feel blessed to be a part of the Messiah family.

OPERATIONS

Landscape & Beautification Schedule

The Landscape & Beautification Team helps care for the property grounds, especially the flower beds and places where there is mulch. Some people or groups of people have se-lected areas they maintain throughout the summer. Other people just show up and help where it is needed most.

Due to the excess rain, our care for the grounds is behind schedule. So, we are scheduling the following days for the team to work on the grounds.

Saturday, June 15, 8:00-11:00 AM

Saturday, July 13, 8:00-11:00 AM

Saturday, August 10, 8:00-11:00 AM

Saturday, September 14, 8:00-11:00 AM

Saturday, October 12, 8:00-11:00 AM

On Saturday, June 15th, the Landscape & Beautification Team will concentrate on the front of the church, the east side of the building on facing Lahmeyer (across from Ravenscroft), and then work the sides towards the entrances. Please bring weed eaters, hedge trim-mers (manual or electric), shovels, wheelbarrows, and gloves. The more people we have, the quicker we can finish. Or if we have time, the team can address other areas as well.

Dave Mould, the Director of Property Care and Sanitation, will help facilitate these days. If you will be there on June 15th and would like mulch ordered for your area, please contact Dave through the office with your request by Wednesday, June 12th.

Thank you for helping maintain our beautiful property at Messiah!

OPERATIONS (cont)

Daytime Building Security

During regular daytime office hours, all exterior doors, except door #1, will be locked. We ask that everyone entering the building check in at the office. This will allow the staff to know who is in the building. For the safety of the childcare children, it is important that we account for everyone in the building at all times. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Messiah Lutheran Church Vision Statement Our Vision: To forever change lives through the Gospel of Jesus by becoming an equipping, empowering, and mobilizing church in our community that displays the love of Christ and con-nects with people of all walks of life through worship, communion, service, fellowship, and compassion, led by the Holy Spirit and focused on the Great Commission (Mt 28.18-20).

Our vision includes a 3-5-year focus on…

MEAM – Messiah Emerging Adult Ministry (ages 20-30) We desire to broaden our scope of ministry to meet the practical spiritual needs of

single, young adults. Messiah Lutheran Church will commit resources to expand hospitality and engage-

ment to emerging adults. In the next year, we will develop a social media ministry to engage young adults in

meaningful issues of faith and life. We will also create a physical space on our premises that will foster hospitable and authentic conversations.

Families with Young Children Messiah Lutheran Church desires to partner in worship and ministry with families with

young children. Through our preschool and childcare ministry (Preschool/Childcare), we can meet the needs of this group, which comprises a large portion of the community sur-rounding the church. It is of utmost importance to connect with these families because youth are the lifeblood and future of our church.

We will build and strengthen our relationships to families with young children through the Preschool/Childcare ministry.

In the next five years, we dream of growing church membership within the Preschool/Childcare program from 10% to 60%. Furthermore, we desire to increase attendance and inclusion of the congregation at Preschool/Childcare events and Preschool/Childcare fami-lies at congregational events.

Forever Young Messiah Lutheran Church is called by God to reach Empty Nesters, both those nearing

retirement and those already retired, with the Good News of abundant life through Jesus Christ. The skills and experiences of these adults are a rich resource for our community.

We will offer them new opportunities for worship, for fellowship among themselves and within our congregation, seminars and personal services to maintain and improve their quality of life, and avenues for them to be of service to the community.

In each of the next 5 years, we will offer 4-6 meaningful outreach activities for person-al growth, fellowship, and service.
