The Message of Fatima

The story of Fatima begins in 1915 when three children, Lucia agedten, and her two cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, aged nine and

seven respectively, noticed a peculiar cloud in the sky. It appeared on

three different occasions, more than ordinarily white and perfectly

visible as a human form. It was a foretaste of what was to come.

Apparition of the Angel

1. In the Spring time of 1916 it came again, "a light whiter thansnow, revealing the form of a young man, he spoke: "Fear not, I am the

Angel of peace. Pray with me." Kneeling down, he bowed his head to

the ground and prayed, "My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love

You. I beg pardon for those who do not believe, nor adore, nor hope,

nor love you."

Having repeated these words, he rose and said: "Pray like this. The

Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of yoursupplications."

2. In mid-summer 1916 the Angel appeared again quite suddenly

saying: "What are you doing? Pray! Pray a great deal! The Hearts of

Jesus and Mary have designs of Mercy for you. Offer up Prayers and

Sacrifices to the Most High. Make everything you do a sacrifice, and

offer it as an act of reparation for the sins by which he is offended, and

this way. I am its Angel Guardian, the Angel of Portugal. Above all,

accept and bear with submission the sufferings sent you by our Lord."

3. In the autumn of 1916 the Angel appeared a third time, holding in

his hands a chalice surmounted by a Host, from which drops of blood

were falling into the chalice, leaaving the chalice and the Host

suspended in the air, he prostrated on the ground and repeated this

prayer three times: "Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I

adore you profoundly, I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul

and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of

the world in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by

which He is offended. By the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart,

through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary I beg theconversion of poor sinners."

Then rising, the Angel took the chalice and the Host. He gave the

Host to Lucia and the contents of the chalice to Jacinta and Francisco,

saying: "Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horridly

outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your

God."

Apparitions of Our LadyI. On May 13th 1917 Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta were playing in the

Cova da Iria, about a mile away from home, when suddenly they were

beautiful lady dressed in white, poised over a holm-oak young tree.

She was more brilliant than the sun, radiating a sparkling light. The

Lady spoke: "Do not be afraid. I will do you no harm. I am from heaven

and have come to ask you to come here for six months, on the

thirteenth day at the same hour, Later on will tell you what I want and

will return here a seventh time."

Lucia addressed the Lady: "Shall I go to heaven? "Yes, you will."

And Jacinta?" "She will go also." And Francisco?" "He will go there

too, but he most say many Rosaries first,"

Then Lucia asked; "Is Maria Das Neves in heaven?"

"Yes, she is."

'Amelia?""She will be in purgatory till the end of the world." (Amelia was

about nineteen when she died).

Our Lady asked the children: "do you wish to offer up to God all the

sufferings He desires to send you in reparation for the sins by which He

is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners?"

When the children replied, "Yes we do", Our Lady said, "Then you

will have much to suffer, but the grace of God will comfort you."Finally, Our Lady instructed the children: "say the Rosary everyday

in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war"

2. June 13th, 1917, the three children had just finished saying the

Rosary with a group of people when Our Lady appeared at the same

spot again, and spoke with Lucia:" want you to say the Rosary everyday,

and to learn to read. Later I will tell you what else I want."

"I will take Jacinta and Francisco to heaven soon, but you mustremain here for some time longer. Jesus wishes to make use of you to

make me known and loved, he wants to establish in the world devotion

to my Immaculate Heart."

Lucia was sad at the thought of being left alone without her

cousins, but Our Lady said to her Do not be disheartened. My

Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to

God,"

3. July 13th. 1917 - Again there was a flash of light and Our Lady

appeared over the holm-oak young tree and spoke with Lucia."...

continue to say the Rosary everyday in honour of Our Lady in order to

obtain peace for the world and the end of the war, because only she can

obtain it."

"I want you to tell us who you are, and to perform a miracle so

that everyone will believe that you appeared to us," Lucia said.

"Continue to come here every month. In October I will tell you

who I am and what I want, and will perform a miracle so that many

may believe."

"Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say often, especially when

you make some sacrifice: "Oh Jesus this is for the love of You, for

the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committedagainst the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

Then the children were given a vision of hell in which they could see

demons and those who were damned. Our Lady said to them: "You

have seen helI where the souls of poor sinner go. In order to save them,

God wishes to establish in the world, devotion to my Immaculate

Heart. If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved, there will be

terrible war will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI.

"When you see a night lit up by an unknown light, know that it is

the sign God gives you that He is about to punish the world for its

crimes by means of war, hunger and persecution of the Church and the

Holy Father. In order to prevent this, I shall come to ask the

consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion

of Reparation of First Saturdays.

"If my wishes are fulfilled, Russia will be converted and there will

be peace. If not Russia will spread her errors throughout the world,

promoting wars and persecution of the Church. The good will be

martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer and various nations

will be annihilated. But in the end,My Immaculate Heart will triumph.The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me and it will be converted,

and a period of peace will be granted to the world ...

"When you recite the Rosary, after each mystery say: "Oh my Jesus,

forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to

heaven, especially those who are most in need of Thy mercy."th th

4. August 13 and 15 - On the morning of August 13 the three

children were kidnapped byt h e h o s t i l e G o v e r n m e n t

Administrator and were thus

prevented from being present

in the Cova da Iria to meet Our

Lady. In the meantime a crowd

of about 18,000 had assembled

there. At noon they heard anoise like thunder and saw a

flash of light followed by a filmy

cloud which came from the

east and settled on the little

holm-oak young tree, paused

for a few moments then rose

and disappeared.

children returned home after

their kidnapping experience

and went out minding sheep at

a place called Vallinhos, a short

distance from home. Here Our

Lady appeared to them and

spoke with Lucia: "I want you to

continue going to the Cova da Iria on 13th, and to continue saying the

Rosary every day. In the last month I will perform a miracle so that all

will believe."

Then with a sad expression She said: "Pray, pray very much and

make sacrifices for sinner's, for many souls go to hell because they havenobody to pray and make sacrifice for them."

5. September 13th, 1917 - As before there was a flash of light and

Our Lady appeared on the holm-oak and spoke with Lucia; "Continue

to say the Rosary in order to obtain the end of the war. In October Our

Lord will come, and also Our Lady of Dolours and our Lady of Carmel.

Saint Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world. God is

your sacrifices. In October I will perform a miracle so that all will

believe."

6. October 13th, 1917 - Each month from May to October people

arrived in ever increasing numbers to be present for the apparition of

Our Lady. On October 13th an estimated 70,000 were present in spite of

torrential rain which began early on the evening of the 12th. At twelve

O'clock Lucia announced that Our Lady was coming. There was a flash

of light and Our Lady appeared over the holm-oak, and spoke to Lucia:

"I want to tell you that I wish a chapel to be erected here in my honour,

for I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue to say the Rosary everyday, the

war will soon end, and the soldiers will return to their homes. Do not

offend God our Lord any more, for He is already deeply offended."As Our Lady disappeared, the curtain of clouds covering the whole

sky split as if torn down the middle and rolled aside to leave the sun

shinning in a great expanse of sky. Although it was midday, the crowd

could stare at the sun without being blinded, for it shone like a silver

disc, very clear and bright but without the blazing dazzle of normal

midday sun.

To the right of the sun the three children saw a vision of the HolyFamily St. Joseph and the Holy Child made sign of the Cross three times

over the crowd. Lucia then saw Our Lady of Dolours with Our Lord

beside her. He made the sign of the Cross over the crowd. Finally Lucia

saw a vision of Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the Infant Jesus on her

knee.

The whole crowd witnessed the miracle promised by Our Lady in

her earlier apparitions. As they gazed at the sun they saw it move. Itbegan to spin like a giant wheel, shooting out great beams of coloured

light. Suddenly it seemed to break away from the sky and moving in zig-

zag jumps, appeared to plunge down towards the crowd. The

phenomenon lasted about fifteen minutes and was witnessed not only

by the huge crowd gathered in the Cova da Iria, but also by many people

in the surrounding district up to thirty miles away.

The Message of the Immaculate Heart of MaryOn December 10, 1925 Our Lady with the Child Jesus appeared to

lucia at the Convent in Pontevedra where she was then a Dorothian

Sister. Our Lady rested one hand on Lucia's shoulder, while in other

hand she held a heart surrounded with sharp thorns. The Child Jesus

spoke: "Have pity on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother. It is coveredwith the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment,

and there is not one to remove them with an act of reparation." The Our

Lady said to Lucia: "My daughter, look at my heart surrounded with the

thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their

blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me, and say

that I promise to assist at the hour of death with all the grace necessary

for salvation all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive

months go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, recite five

decades of the Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour

while meditating on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary, with the

intention of making reparation to me."

Jesus explained to Lucia that confession could be made eight days

or even longer. provided they receive Me in the state of grace and have

at Tuy, to ask the Consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart,

promising by this means to prevent the spreading of its errors and to

bring about its conversion.

In 1943 Our Lord appeared to Lucia and complained bitterly and

sorrowfully that there are so small a number of souls who are willing to

renounce whatever the observances of His law requires of them saying:

"The sacrifice required of every person is the fulfillment of his duties in

life and the observance of My law. This is the penance I now seek and

require."

Why Five First Saturdays?

Our Lady asks for the First Saturday devotion in reparation for the

sins committed by those who:-1. Deny her Immaculate Conception ;

2. Deny her Virginity;

3. Deny her Divine Maternity ;

4. Disrespect her Statues and Images;

5. Down-grade devotion to her, especially among children.

The Message of Divine MercyOn February 22. 1931, as Sister Faustina, now Blessed Faustina,

relates the experience:

"I saw Jesus dressed in a white garment. He held one hand raised in

blessing and with the other, He was touching His garment at the breast.

From under the garment came two rays of light; one red, the other

pale."As she knelt motionless,

immersed in cross currents of joy

and fear, Our Lord spoke:

'Paint a picture according to

the vision you see with the

inscription, "Jesus I Trust in You." I

desire that this picture bevenerated first in your chapel and

then throughout the whole

world.'

This apparition repeated

itsel f so many t imes. Her

confessor advised her to ask for

an explanation of the red and

white rays. She did and she was

instructed:

"The rays on the picture

represent the blood and water

which gushed forth from the

depths of My Mercy when My

agonizing Heart was opened on

the Cross. The pale rays symbolize

the water, which justifies the

soul; the red rays represent the blood, which is the life of the soul.

These rays shield the soul before the wrath of My Father. Fortunate is he

who lives in their shelter, for the just hand of God will never reach him."

He then gave her a short prayer and told her to recite it often:

"0 Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus as a

fount of Mercy for us. I trust in You."

Sister Faustina looked deep into the Merciful heart of Christ, and

wrote in her diary:

"The Lord permitted me to see the immensity and greatness of His

Mercy. If only souls could realize how much God loves them! All

comparison, no matter how strong and touching, is only a pale shadow

of the reality."

Jesus confirmed her statement many times, and pleaded for the

return of sinners-great sinners. He told her:

"Write, the greater the misery the stronger the right to Mercy.Summon all souls to the confidence in the incomprehensible abyss of

My Mercy for I desire to save all. The well of Mercy was opened wide

with a lance on the Cross for souls. I do not exclude anyone."

Again and again Our Lord came to Sister Faustina and repeated His

invitation to sinners, assuring them of His open arms.

Know, My daughter, that My Heart is Mercy itself. From this sea of

mercy graces pour out upon the whole world. No soul that comes to medeparts without being comforted. All misery vanish in my Mercy, and

every grace, redemptive and sanctifying, stem from this source."

"Distrust of souls tears at My bosom. The lack of confidence in

chosen souls hurts Me most. Despite My inexhaustible love they do not

trust Me!"

Our Lord had a word too for our times. As hopes for peace fade,

floods rampage, strikes threaten and the whole world continue to beunsettled. His words to Sister Faustina take on a deeper meaning.

"Tell ailing mankind to draw close to My Merciful Heart and I will fill

it with peace... mankind will not find solace until it turns with

confidence to My Mercy."

In order to bring about this all-out conversion to the Mercy of God,

Our Saviour offered some aids to that end. Four were specifically

mention: the Picture, the Chaplet of Mercy, the Novena, the Feast.

The PictureAt the first apparition Our Lord instructed Sister Faustina to paint a

picture with the words: "JESUS I TRUST IN YOU." Our Lord desires the

picture to be venerated and attached a promise to it:

"I promise that the soul that will venerate this picture will notperish. I further promise to that soul victory over its enemies already

here on earth and especially in the hour of death. I Myself, shall defend

that soul as my own glory ..."

A most unusual aspect of the Mercy message is the promise of

physical protection; contained in the words:

I will preserve the cities and homes in which this picture shall be

found." The promise was miraculously manifested during the second

world war in the manner in which Cracow and Vilno were spared from

destruction when Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. Warsaw and

practically every other major Polish city was either destroyed or badly

damaged except for Cracow and Vilno which happened then to be the

only two cities where official ecclesiastical approval was granted for

spread of the message and display of the picture for public veneration.

The Chaplet of MercyOn September 13, 1935, Sister Faustina saw an Angel, depicted to

her as the executor of God's wrath, In his hands were lightning bolts of

thunder. She understood the Angel was about to visit a certain place on

earth and mete out punishment on its inhabitants. Our Divine Saviour,had made Sister Faustina's heart after His own merciful one, and she

was sorrowful and begged the angel for mercy. But somehow she

realized that her poor prayers were without power to appease the

wrath of God. Then suddenly the Holy Trinity was manifested and at the

same time she heard these words:

"Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of

your most beloved Son and Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement of oursins and the sins of the whole world. Through His most sorrowful

passion have mercy on us and on the whole world,"

Wonder of wonders, as she repeated the words over and over the

Angel was powerless to mete out the punishment. The next day While

going into the chapel she heard once again:

As many time as you enter the chapel, immediately recite the

prayer I taught you yesterday."

She recited it at once and the voice spoke again:

"This prayer is given to appease the wrath of God. You will recite it

for nine days on the part of the Rosary (Five decades) in the following

manner."

The following day an inner voice taught her to say this prayer on

ordinary rosary beads.

The NovenaOur Blessed Lord also gave Sister Faustina a Novena to His Mercy.

He said: "I desire the confidence of My creatures. Let not even the weak

and sinful fear to approach Me; even though their sins be numerous as

the sand of the earth all will vanish in the fathomless pit of My Mercy."

She received definite instructions on how to make this Novena:

"During these nine days I want you to lead souls to the fount of

My Mercy, in order that they may draw from it strength, refreshment

and all the graces they need in the trials of their lives, equally in the

hour of death. Each day you will lead a group of different souls and

immerse them in the sea of My Mercy. Each day you will beseech the

Father through my bitter passion for grace for these souls."

The Feast of Mercy

The Novena can he made at any time, but our Lord wishes it be

made beginning Good Friday in preparation for the Feast He was to tell

her about: the Feast of His Mercy, which should be celebrated on the

first Sunday of Easter. Our Lord said;

"My daughter, speak to the world of My inexhaustible Mercy. I

desire that the Feast be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, especially forpoor sinners, The very depths of My Mercy will be opened on that day, I

will pour out a sea of graces upon those souls that will approach the

fount of My Mercy. The souls that will go to confession and communion

(on that day) will obtain a complete remission of sin and punishment.

Let no soul fear to come to Me, even if its sins be as scarlet. This

Feast emerged from the bosom of My Mercy and is founded in the

My Mercies. I desire that it be celebrated with great solemnity on

the first Sunday of Easter."

Our Blessed Lord warns:

"Write: before I come as the just One. I first open wide the gate of

My mercy. He who does not want to pass through the gates of Mercy

will have to pass through the gates of justice.

Our Blessed Mother appeared to Sister Faustina too. On the Feast

of the Annunciation in 1936. Mary said to her:

"I gave the world a saviour. You must proclaim His Mercy to it and

prepare it for His Second Coming. He will then come not as a Merciful

Saviour, but as a just judge. It will be a day of horror; resolved to be the

day of justice, the day of the wrath of God. Angels tremble before it ...Speak to souls of His great Mercy while there is still time. If you remain

silent now you will have to account for a great number of souls on that

final day. Fear nothing. Be faithful to the end.

The Message of the Sacred Heart

The sacred Heart of Jesus and its unbounded love for man was

known in the Church long before St Margaret Mary. But only a few

of the faithful were devoted to it or honoured it. Its worldwide

devotion was destined for a later period in the world's history,

when men's hearts were growing cold and indifferent and Our Lord

received insults in return for His love; when the terrible heresy of

Jansenism which set limits on God's love and Mercy was gaining

ground like cancer in France.On the feast day of St John. in the little dark convent chapel

standing to this day, Margaret was wholly overcome by the Divine

presence. She relates "He made me rest for a long time upon His

Sacred Breast, where He revealed to me the marvels of His love and

the unexplainable secrets of His Sacred heart ..." He said, My Divine

Heart is so inflamed with love for men, and for thee in particular,

that being unable any longer to contain within itself the flame of its

burning Charity, it must spread them abroad by thy means ..."

In another vision, Christ's Heart was exposed to her on a throne

of fire and flame, casting rays on every side brighter than the sun

and as clear as crystal. He told her that the limitless love which He

had for men had been the source of all His sufferings. It was the

great desire He had to be perfectly loved by men which had madeHim form the design of revealing to them His Heart and of giving

them, in these latter times, this last proof of His love and proposing

to them an object to engage them to love Him. "He assured me that

we must honour the Heart of God under the figure of His flesh, a

picture of which he wishes to be exposed in order to touch the hard

hearts of men ... And wherever this picture should be exposed to besingularly honoured, it would draw every sort of blessing"

In yet another vision on a first Friday on an unnamed month,

she relates, "He revealed to me the unspeakable wonders of His

pure love and showed to me how intensely He had loved men, from

who he received in return only ingratitude and slights." He said,

"Do you at least comfort Me as far as you are able." When she

could do this. He ordered her to receive Holy Communion as

often as obedience permitted. He especially commanded her to

receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of every month. He

added, "Every night between Thursday and Friday, I will make you

share in the overpowering sadness which I felt in the garden ofolives."

She was to rise between 11 o'clock and midnight and remain

prostrate on the ground with Him for an hour to lessen or reduce in

some way the bitterness which He felt at finding Himself deserted

by His apostles at that time.

A great vision occurred during the octave Corpus Christi in June

1675. Margaret kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament exposed,

heard these words, "Behold this Heart which has so loved men, that

it spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself in order

to prove its love for them." Our Lord then demanded that the First

Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi be a feast day set aside to

honour His Heart; the faithful were to go to communion and make a

solemn act of reparation to His Sacred heart. He said, "I promisethee that My Heart shall open to wield abundantly the sway of its

Divine love upon those who shall thus honour it and cause it to be

so honoured."

Promises of the Sacred Heart ofJesus

Below are summarized the twelve most important promises

made by Our Lord to St Margaret Mary to those who shall honourHis Heart.

1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of

life.

2. I will bring peace into their families.

3. I will comfort them in all their trials and hardships.

4. I will be their secure refuge during life and above all in

death.

5. I will pour special blessings upon all their undertakings.

6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and Infinite

Ocean of mercy.

7. Lukewarm souls shall become devoted souls.

8. Devoted souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.

9. I will bless every dwelling where a picture of My Heartshall be exposed and honoured.

10. I will give to priests the gift of converting the most

hardened souls.

11. Those persons who spread this devotion shall have their

names written in My Heart never to be erased or wiped

away.

12. I promise thee, in the limitless mercy of My heart, that its

all powerful love will grant to all those who go to

communion on the First Friday of every month for nine

continuous months, the final grace of repentance; they

shall not perish or die in its disfavour or without receiving

the Sacraments. My Divine heart will be their assured

The Message of the Miraculous MedalIn July of 1830, Our Lady appeared to Sister Laboure, now Saint

Catherine Laboure and gave her the message of herMiraculous

Medal. On 18th, July She said. "My child you too will know sadness,

but in the time of trial, come here before the altar and pour out allyour troubles. Then you will receive every

consolation.

"My child, the good

God wishes to charge

you with a mission. You

will have much to

suffer, but you will bear

it all with the thought

that you are doing it for

His glory. You will

understand what the

good God desires, and

it will trouble you only until you make it known to him who is todirect you. You will be contradicted, but you will also have the

graces you need. Do not doubt. Speak with confidence and

simplicity. Fear not,"

Late afternoon, Saturday, November 27, while she was at

meditation with other religious at the chapel, Our Lady revealed

the mission to her. Our Lady appeared to her standing next to apicture of St. Joseph, and upon what seemed to be a shinning

globe. Her simple, flowing dress resembled the colour of the sky at

dawn, a radiant white, shot through with shimmering gold. A white

veil covered her head, falling gracefully to bare feet and in her

hands she held a small golden ball surmounted with a cross, which

she pressed lovingly to her heart.

Sister Laboure gazed in ecstasy at the marvelous sight, quiteheedless of the other sisters around her. Then suddenly she

noticed that the Virgin's fingers were glistening with numerous

brilliant rings. The stones in these rings sent forth such dazzling

rays that one could hardly bear to look upon them. Indeed they

enveloped the Blessed Virgin in so much splendor that neither her

feet nor her robe could be seen. And yet some of the preciousstones were not sending forth any rays.

"The globe which you see represents the world, especially

France, and every one in it. The rays are the symbol of the grace I

shed on those who ask me for them." then after a pause She said:

"The stones which send forth no light represent the graces which

people forget to ask me."

Suddenly the golden ball which the Blessed Virgin was holding

vanished. She lowered her hands, and the brilliant rays shone forth

with even greater splendor. A moment later an oval frame

appeared about her, with an inscription in golden letters: '0 Mary

within the depths of her own heart: "Have a medal made after

this model," It said. AII who wear it after it has been blessed will

receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck.

Graces will abound for those who wear it with confidence."

Presently the vision seemed to turn around, revealing a letter Msurmounted by a cross and a bar. Beneath the M were the Hearts of

Jesus and Mary; the first crowned with-thorns, the other pierced by

a sword, and the whole encircled by twelve stars.

Sister Laboure explained to her Mother Superior at one time

that the rays of glory proceeding from her outstretched hands, was

to make people to understand that in God's plan, all grace and

blessings are distributed through the Most Holy Mary.

The Message of the Brown ScapularThe Blessed Virgin gave this

promise to Saint Simon Stock

on July 16th in the year 1251:

"Whosoever dies clothed in

this (Scapular) shall not suffer

eternal fire."

Also to Saint Dominic She

gave the message:

"One day through the

Rosary and the Scapular I willsave the world."

St. Alphonsus says: "Just as men take pride in having others

wear their livery, so the Most Holy Mary is pleased when her

servants wear her Scapular as a mark that they have dedicated

themselves to her service, and are members of the true Family of

the Mother of God."The Lamb of God who takest away the sin of the world is

symbolized in the wool brown Scapular.

To Pope John XXII in the year 1322 She gave the following

promise of the Sabbatine Privilege ('Sabbatine' meaning

'Saturday'): I, the Mother of Grace shall descend on the Saturday

after their death, and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory. I shaft

free.
