That’s right, Patrick was born into a wealthy Brish family. It wasn’t unl he was 16 that he would make his first visit to Ireland. Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raid- ers who invaded his family’s estate. For the next six years Patrick was a prisoner, and he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion. This is where Patrick found and culvated his Chrisan faith. Patrick walked nearly 200 miles to the coast of Ire- land and ulmately escaped back to Britain. Once home, Patrick felt the strong desire to return to Britain and share his faith. Patrick began religious training, a course of study that lasted more than 15 years. Happy March,

St. Patrick’s Day is a day synonymous with green, the Irish, and a handful of other savory activities. I can honestly say I don’t really know much about St. Patrick or the day we celebrate for him, so I did some research. Many of

us know that the holiday observes the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Did you know that St. Patrick wasn’t Irish? That’s right, Patrick was born into a wealthy British family. It wasn’t until he was 16 that he would make his first visit to Ireland. Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raid-ers who invaded his family’s estate. For the next six years Patrick was a prisoner, and he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion. This is where Patrick found and cultivated his Christian faith.

Patrick walked nearly 200 miles to the coast of Ire-land and ultimately escaped back to Britain. Once home, Patrick felt the strong desire to return to Britain and share his faith. Patrick began religious

training, a course of study that lasted more than 15 years. After his ordination as a priest, he was sent to Ireland with a dual mission – to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish. He not only returned to Ireland to preach, but Patrick chose to incorporate tradition-al ritual into his lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to eradicate native Irish beliefs. This is where we get the Celtic Cross.

Fast forward to 1762, and the first St. Patrick day Parade is held in New York City. This is where we begin to see the many traditions of celebrating Irish culture as Patrick did many years prior. Growing up, St. Patrick day was a day to wear green, and usually skip dinner (I was not eating cabbage and corned beef when I was 10 years old). As I’ve gotten older and found a love for history, it has been interesting to learn why we truly celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. If you have any interesting St. Patrick’s Day facts or stories, I would love to hear them!

Vivian Horne was born September 26, 1938 in Worth County, Georgia. She was the third child of James Thomas Dorminey and Mary Lois Golden Dorminey

and has an older and younger sister. Her only brother passed away in March of 2015 at the age of 79. Vivian and her siblings spent their childhood years in school and helping their daddy and mother on the farm. She graduated from Doerun High School in 1956.

Vivian married George Donald Horne, Sr. on December 17, 1955 and moved to Colquitt County to live on the farm where he had lived all his life. They had two children, Don Jr. in 1957, and Carole in 1961. Vivian and Donald farmed growing tobacco, cotton, peanuts, corn, cows, and hogs. She worked for a short time outside the home and sometimes cut out and sewed an outfit to wear before she went to work. She also made all of Carole’s clothes when she was a little child. Vivian was by Donald’s side working in tobacco, helping out with the hogs, hauling peanut wagons to the buying point, and anything else that needed to be done, including bookwork for the farm records.

Vivian was an immaculate housekeeper as she cleaned, vacuumed, and mopped (moving all the furniture) every day before

the children got on the school bus. She prepared three meals a day, froze and canned vegetables, and enjoyed working in her yard where she grew flowers and ferns, keeping them through the winter in her green house. Vivian enjoyed mowing grass in a specific pattern and twice a week many times and would not allow anyone to mow it as long as she was able.

Vivian and Donald traveled to several countries as Donald served in various capacities for Farm Bureau, Colquitt Regional Medical Center, Gold Kist, and some others that enabled them to travel.

Vivian was a volunteer at the hospital for many years. She took care of her elderly mother and father and when Donald got sick, she was his caregiver as well. She is a member of and attends New Elm Baptist Church where she was active when she was younger.

Vivian and Donald lived on the farm for 59 plus years and made the decision to move to an assisted living facility in Moultrie in January of 2015. They moved to Legacy Village in December of 2015 and Donald passed away on January 2, 2016. He was the love of her life and her best friend. Vivian has four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Vivian enjoys her home at Legacy Village and has become attached to the staff and caregivers. She enjoys interacting with all the people and likes to help them.

Nehemiah 8:10 says, “…the joy of the Lord is your strength!” So many times in our lives, we face storms, trials, temp-tations and, yes, we even become

weary. But I have learned personally that regardless of the storms, etc., I can remain strong in the Lord!

In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul describes the glory of God in his life, in ministry. Then he alludes to the thorn in the flesh, Satan, sent to buffet him. He said, “I sought God thrice to remove it and yet Christ said unto him, My grace is sufficient for thee.” My strength, yes Jesus strength, is made perfect in weak-ness! So, to put all this together, joy is the fruit of the spirit. As a child of God, we re-ceived this fruit that came from the Lord Jesus.

Joy is defined as gladness, joyful. And Je-sus said in the scripture, “These things have I spoken unto you that my joy might remain in you and that your joy might be full!” So, let us maintain the joy of the Lord that we might remain strong in the Lord!
