Febr uar y/March 2017 Newslet ter

Message from Administration Aloha CKMS Ohana:

On March 3rd, we welcome our Western Association of Schools and Colleges

(WASC) visiting committee to CKMS.

WASC works in conjunction with the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) to

accredit educational institutions. The WASC Focus On Learning self-study is a joint

process between WASC and the DOE that examines what students know and are able

to do. This process helps a school identify and implement school improvement

needs, supports accountability, and earns an accreditation term. Chiefess Kamaka-

helei’s WASC accreditation is up for review this school year. March 3rd-9th, a team

of teachers, counselors, and administrators from WASC will visit CKMS to review

our programs and determine the term of the next accreditation.

We are excited to showcase the exciting learning happening at Chiefess Kamakahelei

Middle School. Our Teachers strive to make learning applicable to our students’

world, giving them opportunities to connect what is happening in the classroom to

real life experiences. In 8th grade this quarter fantastic learning experiences are hap-

pening in English where students are preparing to debate the topic of cell phone use

while driving. Through this process, they are polishing their abilities to use online

research from trusted sites to gather evidence to support their arguments and refute

their opponents claims. In 8th grade Science, students are studying earthquakes and

participating in the “Tower Challenge”, building structures which they hope will

withstand seismic waves created by a shake table. In 8th Grade Math students are

learning transformations, Geometry skills of reflection, dilation, rotation, and transla-

tion that are applicable in career fields such as drafting, architecture and fashion de-

sign to name a few.

The vision of CKMS states, “E Holomua I Ka Na’auao” ~ Progress through

knowledge, Always Striving, Constantly Learning, and Forever Improving. In

order for CKMS to continue strengthening our school, we need our parents’ in-

put. If you are a parent or guardian of students in grades 7 & 8, we need your

feedback to improve school quality. Students in 7th and 8th will also be com-

pleting the survey through their Advisory. We respectfully request a few mo-

ments of your time to complete the School Quality Survey (SQS). Your honest

responses will remain anonymous. Please respond by March 17, 2017. The in-

formation taken from the survey is extremely useful for schools to use in plan-

ning for improvement and other purposes.

Pomai Burkart, Joseph Hicks, Nouveau Naumu and Debra Badua

National Spread the Word to End the Word Day

Join the rest of the state and the nation in promoting the end of the use of the r-word on March 1st,

2017!!! CKMS Team Unify will be celebrating acceptance week after spring break. However, on Wednes-

day, March 1st we are asking all of you who have one of our CKMS Team Unify shirts or one of our past

Spread the Word shirts to wear your shirts. We still have CKMS Team Unify shirts if you would like to

purchase one for $20.

When some people say the R-word, retard(ed), they might not think it's insulting, but it is. That's why the

campaign 'Spread The Word To End The Word` takes action to spread the message about how hurtful using

the R-word can be. The campaign gets people to pledge to "stop saying the R-word as a starting point to-

wards creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people." This year, the annual Spread The

Word To End The Word took place nationally on Wednesday, March 1.

But just because the day has passed, does not mean it is too late for you to make a commitment and

pledge to eliminate the R-word from your vocabulary. The R-word might not seem offensive to people that

say it, but it's a very disrespectful thing to someone who has or knows someone with intellectual disabilities.

Retarded went from being a medical term to being an insult, a form of bullying and another word for dumb

or stupid. And it has to stop. Words are just as hurtful as physical harm.

Please join me in taking the pledge to end the use the R-word at www.r-word.org/<http://www.r-

word.org/>.
