Newsletter December 2016
Message from the Teachers It’s hard to believe that it is December already and
we will be celebrating Christmas soon!
The teachers are enjoying every day of school and
are very pleased with the progress the children are
displaying. They continue to amaze us with their
ability to learn more and to work hard.
Last month Sonechko and Veselka students enjoyed
the wonderful dance presentation by Catherine
Bawol, Jack’s mom, in the school gym. It was age
appropriate, well performed, and fun. We encourage
all kids to attend our in-class presentations even if it
is not on their regular days.
All Kalyna Kids students, including the OSC ones,
liked the art works they did under the guidance of
pan Sergiy Andriyenko who showed them how to
paint on the foamy “paper”.
Our bussed field trip to Festival of Trees was also fun
for the kids in spite of the bus
being late and the place being
over crowded. Our students
were well organized, supervised
and behaved. A ginger bread
cookie was a tasty surprise for
children at the end of a trip.
At this time, we are actively preparing for the St.
Nicholas concert.
Looking forward to the most amazing holiday of the
year; on behalf of pani Natalya, pani Oksana, pani
Alla, pani Natalka and pani Ksenia, I would like to
wish all Kalyna Kids families a Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year.
Sincerely, on behalf of the teachers
Pani Lesia
Executive Updates On the occasion of the glorious festival of the nativity
of our Lord, we extend our most heartfelt greetings to
all our students, their teachers, and their parents:
may our newborn Lord and Saviour grant you a joyful
celebration of His birth and His holy theophany, a
blessed new year, and success in all your god-
pleasing endeavours!
Христос рождається!

Dirty boots
To accommodate all of our children’s outdoor boots
and shoes, Kalyna Kids purchased some boot shelves
in the main lobby to the right of the doors when you
enter. Please leave your child’s boots there before
entering the classrooms. Thank you!
We also ask parents to please
remove your soiled boots before
entering the classrooms. Our
classroom carpets are not
designed for heavy soiling, and
any mud that is deposited is
tracked everywhere by the
children.

Requests
Our families have often been our greatest resource
for items that we need and for information. So we
humbly ask if you could assist us with either of the
following:
Contacts for our Christmas letter donation
campaign. We send out letters annually to
request donations to our program. We typically
send these to Ukrainian organizations but would
like to expand our request to other Ukrainians in
our community, such as business owners,
prominent community members, or anyone who
has an interest in maintaining our language and
culture.
Our teachers have requested some supplies for
crafts. They would like the left-over rolls from
paper towels, wrapping paper, toilet paper, and
wine corks, bottle caps, and new socks for sock
puppets.
Our OSC students have really enjoyed are the
Cooking Classes that the teachers have started.
However, we do not have a lot of kitchen supplies
and are still searching for donations of lightly
used kitchen ware (e.g. whisk, tongs, spatula,
spoons, bowls, frying pans, griddle, measuring
cups and spoons, colanders, etc.). The more items
we have, the more creative the cooking classes
can be!
St. Martin School News Although we operate independently
from St. Martin School, we enjoy very
good relationships with the
Administration, teachers, and
students. We are given storage space,
access to the gym and playground, use of the school
lobby, use of the Dance Academy, and much more.
Additionally, Kalyna Kids students are included in
most school special events. We also coordinate with
St. Martin to transition children between the school
and our Program, to enhance our Program, and to
avoid duplicating of fundraising efforts.
Therefore, we ask you to extend your courtesy to St.
Martin school by helping keep the lobby clean, and by
supporting their events and fundraisers.
Greeting Card Fundraiser
Our students created beautiful pieces of artwork that
were auctioned off in November, but we wanted
more family members and friends to be able to see
and have. We are selling packages of 10 greetings
cards. They include all of the grade's artwork as well
as a Christmas and Mother's day card in
Ukrainian. This package of 10 cards is being sold for
a low price of $20. The proceeds of these cards will
be used for our Bandura program. If you are
interested, please email
[email protected]. These cards can be used
as greetings cards, framed pictures, or gifts for family
members!

DROP-INS for EVENTS (Playschool and KE)
This applies to field trips, activities, photo day, concerts, and any other special event.
For Playschool/KE, your child may attend for the entire class with no drop-in fee - this is preferred, as it is less disruptive to all the students. You also are not required to fill out the Drop-in Form (we anticipate extra students on these days). However, please let the teachers know that your child is attending.
If you want to attend on an activity day for the activity only, wait in the lobby until the teachers open the doors to let you in (please don't knock on the doors).
If your child normally attends in the afternoon and comes to a morning activity or field trip, they cannot stay for the entire day, as our license does not permit this (unless they are in OSC).
