Smilow Cancer Hospital opening from the ground up
MESSAGEFROM THE PRESIDENTHello Friends,
Fall seems to be the busiest time for the
Auxiliary, and this past fall was no exception!
Our annual meeting in September was a great
success with 107 attendees, and a wonderful
speaker Dr. Tom Lynch. Also, having the dinner
event on the water catching the sunset was a plus. The Atrium Gift
Shop and Fitzgerald’s Florist presented a beautiful array of gifts and
arrangements for guests to peruse and purchase.
Many of our committees were very active during this time period,
also. It was exciting to see our new members becoming involved with
projects on their respective committees. Many new ideas and
processes are being discussed and it is great to feel all of the energy.
Membership renewal letters were mailed in October and we’re
trusting that everyone has sent in their renewals for this year.
The Opera and Wine Lovers Dinner was wonderful. More than 65
people attended and enjoyed the excellent food from the Opera
Lovers Cookbook. The author, Francine Sagan, spoke about Italian
opera and referenced food with the operas and composers. Who will
ever forget her description of her grandmother whipping cream to
the tempo of Figaro? The Wines from Sensi Vineyards were enjoyed
by all and the soloists from the Yale School of Music exceeded
everyone’s expectations. It was not only an exceptional evening, but
profitable as well.
The Toy Closet Committee was in full swing with their annual
holiday deliveries and the Auxiliary conference room once again
became a beehive of activity with packing and sorting.
Kicking off 2010, the Toy Closet committee teamed with the
University of New Haven on January 30 and Quinnipiac University
on February 6 to host toy drives, both of which were successful
bringing in dozens of new toy donations to the program. Additional
drives are planned over the coming months.
It is my hope to keep the momentum going strong this year with
new ideas for projects, toy drives, fundraising activities and social
events. Share your ideas for a fun, exciting and lucrative 2010!

After years of intricate planning and painstaking preparation, SmilowCancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven was officially dedicated onOctober 21, 2009. At the ribbon-cutting event, which was attended
by more than 400 guests, including trustees, donors and communityleaders, speaker after speaker talked about the lives that would be saved andextended because patients could now receive treatment at the mostcomprehensive cancer hospital in the Northeast.
Special guests included Governor M. Jodi Rell, who told the audiencethat she was in awe of this building. “We are standing at the doorstep ofsomething great,” the governor said. “But this building won’t save lives –this is a building that will allow people to save lives. To accomplish thisduring an economic downturn is a testament to the will and vision of Yale-New Haven, Yale School of Medicine and Yale Cancer Center.”
Joel E. Smilow, former chair, chief executive officer and president ofPlaytex Products, Inc., and naming benefactor for Smilow Cancer Hospital, said the contribution he and his wife, Joan, made to the hospital that nowbears his name is an investment. “It will pay dividends every year. Everyyear, thousands of patients will benefit – they will receive the dividends.”
The day before the official dedication, YNHH employees were invited topreview Smilow during employee celebrations held in the building’s soaringtwo-story lobby.
Marna Borgstrom, YNHH president and CEO, along withhospital and community leaders, officially cut the ribbondedicating the Smilow Cancer Hospital.

A TIMELINE
Since 1953 the
Yale-New Haven
Hospital Auxiliary has
contributed over $5
million to support the
hospital and its
programs. Auxiliary
Committees offer
assistance, support and
education in a variety of
ways. The Atrium Gift
Shop, managed by a
professional team,
supported by volunteers
and overseen by the Gift
Shop Committee,
generates significant
revenues that support
Auxiliary projects. The
Toy Closet program
sends children home from
their hospital stay, day
surgery or clinic visit
with a new toy. Health
education lectures
provide educational
information to the
community expertly
delivered by noted
YNHH healthcare
professionals. The Project
Grants Committee has
contributed over
$675,000 to departments
for special projects and
distinctive needs. These
projects are just some of
the ways the Auxiliary
works closely with the
hospital to continually
support the hospital’s
needs and community
outreach efforts.
Sergeant James Lynch (third
from left) and officers of
Troop G, Connecticut State
Police based in Bridgeport,
recently donated several
dozen toys for the Toy Closet
Program. The officers
collected the toys by
conducting toy drives at
several Bridgeport area
locations. Troop G has been
donating to YNHCH for
more than 10 years.

Auxiliary members came out to celebrate the unveiling of a mural on display in the MRI Center in the basement of the Dana Clinic building recently. The picturesque,
colorful, multi-panel mural of underwater sea life was designed and painted by renownedartist Vladimir Shpitalnik and his students from the Paier College of Art in Hamden.
The mural project was funded by the Auxiliary through a project grant. The grant alsofunded a new live fish tank and play area for children in the MRI Center’s waiting room.
