Message From The Principal Shady Lane Elementary School, Deptford Township, NJ Jackie Scerbo, Principal Volume 5, Issue 1 Sep - Nov 2015 Greetings from Shady Lane! Welcome to our Fall Edition of the Shady Lane Times for 2015- 2016 school year! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanks- giving and rested up for the upcoming weeks of December! It has been a great fall for many reasons. It’s always a joy when we get kids back in the building in September. I wondered how our stu- dents would handle the earlier schedule, and I am happy to report they have done exceptionally well! Overall, our lateness has been down, please help your kids keep up great attendance. It gets especially dif- ficult as the holidays approach but the kids still benefit from a good night’s sleep and getting to school on time. The weather has treated us well and our students have been able to get out to recess more often than last year at this time. Hopefully this will continue but if not we have ar- rangements made to provide some fun activities if they are inside. As in the past, our decision to stay in or out is based on the “feels like” temperature on our district web- site. If it “feels like” 32 or below we stay in. As we approach the holidays keep in mind our students will be hard at work until the break and will have some fun as well. We hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season! Jackie Scerbo, Principal

Greetings from Shady Lane!

Welcome to our Fall Edition of the Shady Lane Times for 2015- 2016 school year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanks-giving and rested up for the upcoming weeks of December! It has been a great fall for many reasons. It’s always a joy when we get kids back in the building in September. I wondered how our stu-dents would handle the earlier schedule, and I am happy to report they have done exceptionally well! Overall, our lateness has been down, please help your kids keep up great attendance. It gets especially dif-ficult as the holidays approach but the kids still benefit from a good night’s sleep and getting to school on time.

The weather has treated us well and our students have been able to get out to recess more often than last year at this time. Hopefully this will continue but if not we have ar-rangements made to provide some fun activities if they are inside. As in the past, our decision to stay in or out is based on the “feels like” temperature on our district web-site. If it “feels like” 32 or below we stay in.

As we approach the holidays keep in mind our students will be hard at work until the break and will have some fun as well. We hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season!

My Summer Vacation By Zahra Dela Cruz, 3rd Grade

My vacation was awesome! We went on a road trip! We drove 6,000 miles and we went to 14 states from east coast to west coast and Vancouver, Canada. It took us 23 days. We left at 3:00 in the morning. In the car, we would play our iPads or write on our window using markers. Sometimes we would open Shop-kins as a reward for being good. We would make crafts out of yarn and we would read little questions and answer them. We hiked a lot. It wasn't actually that tiring. But when we hiked to the Hollywood sign it was tiring. It was really hot. But hiking was fun! We also went to National Parks and got Junior Ranger Badges and patches. It was cool! We slept in hotels and swam in pools. But, if we couldn't find a hotel, we would sleep in the car in a Walmart parking lot. We sometimes drove long times. Also we visited cool places like The Four Corners, The Grand Canyon, and The Hollywood Sign! I had a fun vacation!

PTA NEWS The PTA is off to a busy start this school year! In addition to introducing themselves at Back to School Night, they hosted Pumpkin Carving Night and Shady Lane’s Halloween Party at the Deptford Skating Center. Both events were well attended, and they hope to get even more parents and students to come to events in the future. As in past years, the PTA welcomed Veterans with refreshments at Shady Lane's annual Veteran’s Day assembly.

Some upcoming events include Holiday Tables and Cookies and Milk with Santa. Holiday tables allows students to shop for loved ones and will be held during the week of December 7th. Cookies and Milk with Santa will be in the evening on Thursday, December 17th. For those new to the school, this event in-cludes crafts, snacks, Santa, and more!

Over the next few months, there will be more opportunities to support the PTA through family nights and fundraisers. You can receive updates and support the Shady Lane PTA by liking their page on Facebook and attending meetings listed on the Shady Lane calendar!

Manhattan, NY A couple months ago over the summer, my family and me spent the night in Manhattan. At first I thought that what else could there be to see besides the Toys R’ Us in Times Square. By the way there is a 20-foot T-Rex and a Ferris wheel that you can ride on that is over 50 foot inside the store!! But I was wrong

because there was so much that we saw. We went to the fa-mous wax museum and took pictures with the president, Mi-chael Jackson, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and all the superheroes to name just a few. We saw Grand Central Sta-tion, the ball that drops on New Year’s Eve, Scholastic, and my mom took us to a Macy’s that is 10 floors. But the most amaz-ing site I saw was The Freedom Tower. This was the site of Ground Zero and now it has tallest tower in North America, ac-tually the western hemisphere. It is 1776 feet tall to represent year the Declaration of Independence was signed. We went on the observation deck that is the exact height of the original

twin towers. The elevators took less than 60 seconds to go up 1200 feet. There we could view the city 360 degrees. I could see all the bridges that led to New Jersey and the tallest skyscrapers.

Things to do in Virginia By Sujay Patel, 4th Grade

When we visited Virginia over the summer, we went to some fun places. Our first stop was Virginia Beach. But before we got there we had to drive through the Chesa-peake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. This bridge and tunnel com-bined is 23 miles long. The next day we drove to Colonel Williamsburg/Jamestown. There we got to see the first English settlement that led to the United States. We saw a reenactment with soldiers and people who dressed like they did in the 1600s. They used cannons and horses like they did back then. After we spent a day there, the next day we went to Water Country USA. This is Virginia’s larg-est water park and has over 30 water rides. On our last day, we went to Busch Gardens. This is now my favorite park. The theme park is divided into sections by different

countries like Ireland, France, and England. It has more that 50 rides. I ended my trip to Virginia by final-ly having the courage to ride a roller coaster that went upside down.

Sujay’s Corner

My First Eagles Game I went to my first Eagles game on November 15th. My dad had surprised me with tickets to see the Miami Dolphins play against the Eagles. I put on everything that I had that was Eagles. Before the game I felt so excit-ed and anxious. When we got to the stadium, all that I noticed was every-one in green, black, and white. It was awesome. The crowd started to

cheer before the game and never stopped until the end. The crowd really got loud when the Eagles made a touchdown. We were high-fiving people we didn’t even know. Even though the Eagles ended up losing by one point, 19-20, I still had a really exciting and fun time.

Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty Over the summer, my family and I went to Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty. The ferry took us to Ellis Island first. I learned that over 10 million people who came from other countries to America stopped at Ellis Island first. While we walked around, I got to hear stories from actual people who came to this island before 1950. It was really interesting to me. We also saw photographs and read facts about the island and people. Then it was time to go see the Statue of Liber-ty. I learned some cool facts about the Statue of Liberty. One is that she has a birthday that is celebrated in October and it was a gift from France that symbolize freedom. Another is that there are over 300 steps to the crown of the statue and there are 25 windows around the crown. Also, did you know that the 7 spikes on her crown represent the 7 oceans? It could also represent the 7 continents. My sister and I couldn’t believe that the statue is copper and turned green because

of the reaction of copper and water. The last cool fact is that the statue weighs over 400,000 pounds. So the next time you visit the Statue of Liberty, you will know these fun, cool facts.

Back to School Three, two, one

We are going to have fun It’s back to school

It will be cool We will meet new friends

That we will keep to the end It’s time to meet our teachers Who will have cool features

I will have PE, library, music, and art That’s not only the good part I will have Spanish and band

Isn’t that grand I will have a great school year at Shady Lane

I will learn a lot in my brain

Around Shady Lane We have been in school for little more than two months and so many exciting things have happened around Shady Lane. We had pumpkin carving night in October. This is when students come back to Shady Lane in the evening with a gutted pumpkin. We carved funny or scary faces on the pumpkins. Then the teachers handed out little battery candles. Mrs. Scerbo turned off the lights and all of our pumpkins were lit showing the faces we carved. We

also had pink day in October. Students and teachers wore pink to show our support for cancer. We had a fun week where we got to wear crazy hats, mismatched clothes, and our favorite sport team clothes. In November we had an assembly for the veter-ans and parents. Each grade sang a song that was in honor of veterans. We prac-ticed our song during school to sing it perfectly for our concert. Look out for more fun things to do at Shady Lane.

Shady Lane Cares For The People In It’s Community!

Students and staff at Shady Lane have shown their community pride again. On Pink Day we wore pink and formed a human ribbon for breast cancer awareness! We had a variety of activities to raise money for Breast Cancer awareness and research. During the month of October we sold bracelets, pencils, and ribbons, to the students. Also during the month we had penny wars and spirit week. We made a hope tree with the pink ribbons purchased by the students. To raise additional funds the staff was allowed to wear jeans on Pink day.

We collected a grand total of $ 1,058.74 Shady Lane truly cares for the people in its community!!

This past June, Shady Lane School hosted its 7th Annual Lemon Day Event. All the proceeds raised from Lemon Day were donated to Alex's Lemon-ade Stand and we raised a whooping $3,840. It

was another successful event in which we sold t-shirts, bracelets, pins, pret-zels and lemonade. We also had a change drive in which the students brought in close to $1,000 just in change. Can't wait to see what this year will hold for Lemon Day.

Shady Lane Elementary School’s Turkey Run is a great chance for students to give back to their community and have some healthy competition. Students can donate different kinds of non-perishable food to the school to distribute to fami-lies in need for the holidays.

This can really make some people happy and just make their day, whether they’re giving or receiving. My class won a pizza party because we donated the most items, and that’s great but it’s nice to know that other people are going to come home and know that there’s food in the cabinet for them. The students at Shady Lane are doing such a good thing.

Collecting the items and seeing how many cans and boxes of food stacked up, it was really great to see how much kids tried their best to contribute. Especially seeing some of the younger kids bring in so much, I know Mrs. Smith and Graham’s class brought in 197 which is amazing!

A lot of people don’t know this too, but the school as a whole brought in over 1,000 items for local fami-lies in need! I believe that is a record and an astonishing one too. So many people are going to benefit from this event.

The Turkey Run also sets an example for kids to give back to their community. It also gives them realiza-tion that some people don’t always have food and that you should always be thankful for what you have.

Sixth Grade Animal Shelter Drive By Mrs. Milligan

During the month of October, the 6th grade class at Shady Lane Elementary School held a drive for the Gloucester County Animal Shelter. As a class, we read a story titled “Stray” and researched what animal shelters do for our community. We were excited about helping out and made posters and decorated drop boxes for the drive.

It was the hope of the students that the animals at the shelter would enjoy the food, treats, and other goodies that we collected. We would like to thank you, the students and families of Shady Lane, for your donations.

We received a letter of appreciation from the Gloucester County Animal Shelter and they posted recogni-tion of our efforts on Facebook.

Happy Diwali!! By Mr. Richardson’s Class

We learned about and celebrated Di-wali on Thursday, November 12th, 2015. Mrs. Mannepalli taught us about the holiday she celebrates in her home country of India. It is called the Festival of Lights. Mrs. Mannepalli brought in diyas (little clay lamps) to

show us how she decorates her house. She presented a Power Point presentation to show us how they celebrate Diwali in India. We saw colorful and sparkly fireworks. We saw how the girls and boys in a school danced in India with our President Barack Obama and the First Lady. After her presentation, Mrs. Mannepalli brought in yummy cookies for us to enjoy and celebrate Di-wali! Happy Diwali! Thank you, Mrs. Mannepalli!

Pink Day in my Classroom By Isabella Urbanski, 2nd Grade

I love Pink Day! First, you can see boys wearing pink. Boys don’t usually wear pink. You can also see peo-ple with pink hair. It looks crazy cool. Pink Day is my favorite part of the year. Pink day is awesome!

Halloween Fun By Tyler K. Brown, 2nd Grade

On Tuesday October 27th 2015, I went to the PTA Halloween Skating Party at the Dept-ford Skating Center. First, I went skating on the rink with my friends. Next, I played in the fun house. Then I ate cheesy pizza. I saw many cool Halloween costumes. My friend Lucas wore the same costume as me, a zombie skeleton. Erin was a bumble bee. Her sister won a prize for her costume, and it was the Headless Horseman. I thought it was the scariest. I won a prize for Spin the Pin. We had so much fun! Thank you for setting up the PTA Halloween skating party.

Veterans Day Assembly By Eddie Dugan, 3rd Grade

This is about the Veterans Day assembly. It's the best day of my life I think. I like it because you get to go up on the stage and sing to the veterans and to your parents. My favorite part of that time is the back drop of all the children's veterans. I love you veterans!!

I’m Thankful For… By Yukta Narayan, 5th Grade

I am thankful for my 2 sisters. They take care of me and spend most of their time helping me. My sisters have studied with me and even helped me with my homework. I have never thanked them, but I still appreciate what they do. I regret doing nothing for them, but that is what makes us sisters. I love them and I would spend everyday hugging, helping, and caring for them. I am thankful for them they take over a big piece in my heart.

I am thankful for my parents. They look beyond the present and look forward to the future. My parents want to see what is good for me and also my education. We have spent days studying together and doing whole math books in one summer. They don’t do that just for fun, they seek higher potential in me. My parents want me to have a higher percentage in my grades and keep it that way. The pair wants me to qualify for Junior Olympics and have better times for swimming. There has been some ups and downs, but we have made it through the rough patches. We have had some arguments, but that doesn’t change anything.

I am thankful for my dogs. Their names are Oscar and Windsor. We took Oscar from one of my dad’s col-leagues. We did it for a reason because the family we took him from would have to take care of too much. His brother would’ve lived with him, but we took him at 2 months old. He is now 3 and had him for almost 3 years. He has had my back when I cried or was down and he even snuggled with me if I had a cold or was cold. He would act as my blanket. When he was a puppy, he was the size of his head now, I personally think that’s cute and funny. He pooped under the Christmas tree when we got him, so we got him a Grinch sweater. The sweater can’t even slip through his paw or face now because it’s too tiny. On the other hand we have Windsor too. We only had him ever since June 12th, 2015 which is 5 months. He is always cheerful and snapping at Oscar but that is just the way he plays. Windsor is more of a people lover than a dog lover, and no matter what, he always has a tennis ball or any other dog toy in his mouth. He specifically likes this pink, Bar-bie tennis ball that my friend, Umali, gave him.

I am thankful for my aunt. Her name is Maureen and she is really close to both my sister and I. Aunt Maureen takes us to swimming every Thursday and she doesn’t drop us off at GCIT until we have dinner. That means she takes us to dinner every Thursday, but sometimes she can’t make it. She spoils us by buying everything for not only me, but for my sister too. My aunt isn’t always about dinners and swimming, she looks up to our grades and she looks forward to our futures. My aunt and I are already looking for good things to do when I get into high school, so I know what I want to major and minor in. I appreciate that she looks for the best of me. Aunt Maureen always asks what my grades are every time we meet up.

I am thankful for the life I live. I am thankful for the life I live because not everyone gets to live a good life. I get a nice comfortable bed to sleep in and even a nice closet full of clothes. I even have a toothbrush to brush my teeth and a hairbrush to brush my hair. I host birthday parties at my house and have enough to pay for all the party favors and food. I get Christmas and birthday money. I get to eat at expensive restaurants and eat a whole, full meal. My whole family can pay off the bills and taxes and have a Mercedes Benz for a car. For the life I live, I appreciate it.

I am the most thankful for my education. I am thankful for my education because not everyone gets to learn as much as I do and get an actual teacher. Also, because back in the olden days women and female children were not allowed to go to school and had to clean the house and be like maids. I appreciate the grades I get from learning and all the support I get. I also love how I put in as much effort and get good things out of it. The effort really made me do better. I also like how we can now buy practice books from book stores and practice any of the subjects. I am amazed about my effort being put in my work, how my teachers are trying to make us as students smart, intelligent kids.

Overall, I am thankful for many things. I really appreciate that my teachers, parents, and other family mem-bers look for the best in me and also support me. I have many more things I am thankful for, but these were just the few. Hope you have a good Thanksgiving! Thank everyone who is around you and supports you.

The Girls’ Scary and Spooky Halloween By Yukta Narayan, 5th Grade

On a dark and stormy night 4 girls were having a sleepover. This was a Friday night, but it wasn’t an ordi-nary one, was the night before Halloween! The girls’ names were Jenna, Lisa, Katie and Natalie. It had already become midnight and the girls were still up. They were telling scary stories in Katie’s room with no lights on and just a nightlight, when all of a sudden they heard banging on the front door. BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG! Katie and her friends knew that it wasn’t her parents because they were asleep and her sister was sleeping over her friend’s house. They continued to tell more scary sto-ries when they heard banging on the front door again. BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG! They got scared so all of the girls went downstairs and looking through the window to see who it was. When all of the girls finished looking out, Natalie checked again and saw something white. Natalie told Lisa and she went to open the door. Lisa picked up the note and read: ‘Tomorrow while Trick-or-Treating something will happen to you!’ Lisa got scared and thought that the others should read it too, so she gave them the note to read. Jenna, Natalie and Katie all gasped. The friends took the note seriously and started to panic and freak out. After a couple minutes, Jenna, Lisa, Katie, and Natalie started to head up the stairs. They soon fell asleep.

The next morning they woke up and remembered the note first thing. They wanted to forget all about the note so they just continued to get ready and gossip. While the girls were doing their makeup, the doorbell rang. The girls rushed downstairs to see who it was. Natalie opened the door again and read the note. The note read: ‘Your surprise starts now!’ The girls just threw the note away, forgot all about it and went back upstairs. They finished doing their makeup and putting their costumes on. Jenna, Lisa, Katie, and Natalie came downstairs and started to eat a light breakfast, a bagel with some orange juice. It took them 15 minutes and 26 seconds to eat. Jenna counted because she is smart and a brainiac. They fin-ished breakfast early just to get their candy bags ready. Jenna then remembered the note and came up with a guess, or hypothesis.

“What if a neighbor was trying to scare us and tell us that we will get a lot of candy from everyone’s house?” asked Jenna sure of herself.

The girls headed out and started to get ready by putting on their shoes and extra pieces of their cos-tumes. Also, be ready to knock on everyone’s door and walk a lot. Jenna, Lisa, Katie, and Natalie stopped at all of Katie’s neighbors’ houses. When they knocked on the doors, all ladies answered the door and they handed 3 to 4 big handfuls of candy per person.

After 4 hours of Trick-or-Treating in the morning and afternoon combined, they walked back to Katie’s house. They all came up with the idea of counting their candy. Jenna had 472, Lisa had 498 pieces of candy, Katie had 412 pieces of candy, and Natalie had 421 pieces of candy. In total, they had 1,803 pieces of candy.

All of a sudden, after all the fun they had, they remembered the note AND Jenna’s hypothesis. They all thought she was right. The girls all started laughing and talking about their reactions to the notes.

They still were curious who put it there, so the 4 friends went to the neighbors’ house and asked if they tried scaring them and put the notes on Katie’s front porch. The neighbors said YES! They were all flab-bergasted! The neighbors asked if Jenna, Lisa, Katie, and Natalie got scared and guess what? They all said YES!

On the way back to Katie’s house the girls were talking about how this Halloween was the best one yet. This was their scary, spooky, and frightening Halloween adventure. They all had a spectacular Halloween!

Longwood Gardens Field Trip This year Shady Lane’s Fifth Grade class was the recipient of a grant from Longwood Gardens. The grant covered admission and bus fees for all 5th grade students. The students participated in a hands-on pro-gram, “Beyond Recycling”. The students were broken up into groups of 10-15 students and a teacher with their own educator, from Longwood, for the 90 minute program. Participants were taken on a rotat-ing basis to three separate areas of the Conservatory, where they learned about the development of Longwood Gardens and took part in mini-lessons focusing on renewable or nonrenewable resources. The trip was an informative experience for all of the students who will be taking part in the decisions that will affect the future of our planet.

Why I Love Fall By Eddie Dugan, 3rd Grade

I love fall because I love going pumpkin picking. My mom, dad, my brother, and I went to the pumpkin patch. When we first got there we went to play on the hay stacks. Then we went on the hayride. Me and my brother were so excited! When we got to the pumpkin patch we picked our pumpkins fast. Usually we take forever. I said to my mom “i want A big pumpkin” and as soon as I seen a big pumpkin I ran to it. I picked it up and said to my mom” I want this pumpkin” . They even had horse back rides there! Then me and my brother bought some animal food so that we could feed the other animals. They had cows, chickens, and goats. It was a great day at the pumpkin patch!

At school we have pumpkin carving night. I scrapped out my pumpkin at home and then brought it to school all cleaned out. I went with my mom, brother, and my friend Hailey. When we got there I spotted with my own eyes my two teachers Mrs. Bradley and Mrs. Moore. There were other teachers there too. The principal came to compliment on my pumpkin that I carved. When we were all finished carving our pumpkins we turned out all the lights and turned on the candles in our pumpkins. My pumpkin lit up in the dark. Mine was cool not to brag! It was such a fun night.

Fourth Grade’s Trip To The Zoo By Landon Sentak, 4th Grade

The fourth grade field trip to the zoo was great! We went to the Philadelphia Zoo, America’s first zoo! Don’t you hate when the animals at the zoo aren’t doing anything? The day we went the animals were so active! The male lion was running around with the female pride. The sea otters kept jumping in and out of the water. The orangutan family was playing with old white sheets and cardboard boxes. It was the first time I’ve ever seen the King Cobra slithering around! The fourth grade classes had fun walking around and exploring the zoo.

Fun Facts about animals in the zoo:

Giraffes only need 20 minutes to 2 hours of sleep per day

Polar bears fur looks white but is actually clear like fishing line

Gorillas eat about 50 pounds of vegetation every day

Orangutan females have only 1 child every 7 or 8 years

Sea otters are called river wolves in South America

Each tiger has its own unique striped pattern kind of like our fingerprints

Wicked House By Rachel Reagan, 3rd Grade

Down the street just by the Halloween store there was the creepiest house EVER!!!!! It had werewolf’s howling, ghosts, trees falling down, and even cautions tape!!! They say that maybe somebody died in there. But that`s not true because police checked and no one was in there. When the police came out, they couldn`t even talk. They looked like they were frozen. People from all over the world knew about this house. They called it the Wicked House.

It`s been over a year. It began to get even creeper than usual. They even had a theme song for that house. Next it was Halloween. And there was a full moon! That`s when werewolves come out. In a differ-ent house up the street there is a little girl named Sara. She was frightened and never wanted to go any-where when there was a full moon. So her mom told her “you`ll be fine”. So she went. And when she walked by the Wicked House she went on the other side of the sidewalk.

But when it`s Halloween there`s a portal. So you halve to be CAREFUL so, that you don`t get sucked in. But it was too powerful and Sara got sucked in. It was the next day; her mom was freaking out and called the police. They were on it. They searched and searched but they couldn`t find a little girl. Then one po-lice guy said to himself: f-u-l-l-m-o-o-n. Then he said another word: p-o-r-t-e-l. He told the another police officers: last night there was a full moon, so that means there was a portal and she must of got sucked in.

Finally, it has been 3 days and they got the army. They didn`t do this before because it was too scary so, this time they really did it. And blew up the house and all the kids flew out of the portal from years ago .And the house was no longer there.

The House of Doom By Emma Jenkins, 3rd Grade

This is the scariest house on the block. The people who dared to come in never came out …dondondon!!!! On Oct. 31, do not go near this house because someone scary and mean used to live in there. There is now a ghost who eats children. The latest victims were Sophia, Taylor and Emma. They were tricked into coming in the House of Doom. It was so scary because different spirits cause TWITCHES to your bodies if you are caught looking at their eyes! The House of Doom has black hats, witches in black dresses, and evil spirits. Wake up! Wake up! It’s Halloween! ‘YEAH!’ let’s go get some CANDY! But not from the House of Doom!!!!

Classroom Barter Experience By Mrs. Schilling

My Grade 3 students were studying Economics in our Social Studies class this marking period. We learned about bartering in both our Social Studies and ELA stories. During our E & I period, we had a Bartering Day "Enrichment" experience on Friday, November 20, 2015. Each child brought an item that he/she no longer needed or wanted from home to be traded. Our classroom became a marketplace where students bartered their items. It was a great “Real World” experience for my students. My stu-dents were able to make the connection to our current Social Studies Unit on Pilgrims, and how they bar-tered with each other as well as the Indians/Native Americans. My students had a blast. I want to thank our principal, Mrs. Scerbo, our Director of Special Education, Mr. Barnes, & our Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Morehead for stopping in and taking part in our lesson.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by

celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citi-zens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile cel-ebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

The Knight and the Beanstalk By Brian Crothers, 4th Grade

In a distant land, Barney the Dinosaur was running away from the cops with one hundred Dinolandia Dou-bloons. He was cut off so he ran through an alley. Barney’s hover-board followed him and he got on. Then a cop cut him off. He tried to fly over him, but got sucked into a portal. Barney landed in an unfamiliar place. Barney needed to find someone who could show him around.

To his luck, the Hamburglar was also being chased. Barney saved the Hamburglar by having him jump on his hover-board. Barney said, “We should team up!” The Hamburglar responded, “sounds good”. The Hamburglar told Barney that they were transported to Australia. “Australia?” The Hamburglar replied, “It is a place on earth.” Barney could not believe he was no longer on Dinolandia.

Barney then threw some magic beans on the ground and said, “a beanstalk will grow right here tomorrow. It will connect our worlds.” Suddenly, a man who looked like Tom Brady walked by. Actually, he was Tom Brady! He was on vacation and heading back to the United States the next day. As he was going to the airport he saw the beanstalk. Then he said shockingly to himself, “is that a giant purple dinosaur climbing the beanstalk?” As Tom started climbing, the Hamburglar ran past him and also started to climb. Tom looked up and said, “here goes nothing!” As he started to climb, armor fell from the sky. It turns out that the armor came from the same portal that the beanstalk created. The armor fell right on Tom Brady and transformed him into the Legendary Knight of Will! A sword also fell through and Tom put it at his side.

As soon as Tom got to the top, he saw that Barney had stolen some explosives. Tom blocked Barney from the beanstalk and said, “are you going to blow up my world?” Barney said, “no you have it all wrong! I’m going to blow up my world!” Tom shouted, “I will stop you with my Will Blade!” The Knight of Will drew his sword, trying to stall until the police arrived. Suddenly, the Hamburglar arrived and joined with Barney. The ensuing battle raged for days. Finally one collapsed. The Hamburglar fell in defeat and went to Di-nolandia jail with Barney. The knight returned home with memories that he will never forget and Dinolan-dia is glad they have the Legendary Knight of Will on speed dial.

A Flying Dinosaur Is it a bird? A dragon? No, it's Changyuraptor Yangi. The creature had feathers, wings, and could fly. It lived more than 125 million years ago. It is one of the earliest known flying dinosaurs. Scientists found the fossil in China. It is the largest fossil of its kind ever found.

The Beach Visit By Mark Escarrilla, 6th Grade

One day in the summer, we were going to the beach. It was just going to be an ordinary day to the beach. Having fun with friends and riding the waves. And it was like that, except for some parts.

Let’s start from the beginning. We were in the car, ready to go to the beach. We drove about 20 minutes before we heard a repetitive bumping noise. We stopped on the side of the road and discovered that the tire was flat. My dad called AAA, and the guy started getting the spare tire. Our uncle picked us up, but my dad stayed behind with the AAA guy. We stayed home until our dad called us. Unfortunately, the spare tire was smaller than the other tires so we couldn’t go long distances. As a solution, we got the oth-er car and picked our dad up from the tire service place, and had a normal driving trip. Late, but normal. Everything went well afterwards. Had fun with friends, almost got pulled by the waves into certain doom, had a delicious homemade sandwich. After that we went to a restaurant and ate delicious mussels, but we had to eat outside since the place was a bar. We sat near a harbor and had a beautiful view of the sunset. Most of our friends went home after we were done eating, but a few stayed behind and had ice cream with us. We said goodbye, and got into our car. Then we drove about 10 minutes until we heard a sputtering noise. My dad pulled over to the side of the road. Our car had broke down. We were all like “Again?”

Again we called AAA, and we sat in the car for nearly an hour. The worst part was… our phone was out of battery. Finally, AAA got here. They towed our car to a car service place and we had to stay at a gas sta-tion for over an hour before our uncle picked us up again. It was midnight by the time we got home, when we would have been home at 9 if nothing unusual happened.

It was a crazy and wild day. Many things happened, including filling my mouth with salt water and cough-ing tons after that. Not to mention most of the bad things happened not on the beach. But it was an amazing day, one of the best days.

Pope Francis in Philly By Samantha Dela Cruz, 6th Grade

Blinking, I tried to shake off the tired feeling. This very morning, at 3:00, my family and close friends were traveling to Philadelphia to see the one, the only, Pope Francis! Slowly but surely, I made my way to the car, and fell asleep again. So exciting!

We arrived at the parking lot of the station and ate breakfast there while waiting for our friends and fami-ly to arrive. My family had brought a lot of food in case anyone got hungry. Around 6:00 A.M, we went on-to the train to get to Philadelphia. Through the bitter cold, we pushed on.

Arriving at the station, we got out and started walking. After about 2 miles, we got to the area. A bag check was needed. No fruits allowed, so everyone was eating their fruits instead of throwing them out. Some were even trying to pass them out! When we got in, all I saw were porta-potties everywhere! We found a good spot at 8:00 right in front of the fence where the pope would soon be driving. Now we would just wait.. 8 hours. Great.

Everyone fell asleep while waiting but me. We brought blankets to lie on, but the ground was still hard, no space, and it was hot and cold at the same time. Nothing to do but watch. 8:00 A.M, 11:00 A.M, 1:00 P.M, 3:00 P.M. 11 hours have passed with one more hour to go, so I pushed on with boredom. I have gone too far to turn back.

Finally, the time had come. A lot of people had arrived since 4:00 A.M. My cousins and I stood on the bars and waited until the guards passed. The pope-mobile finally wheeled across us and the crowds went wild. So many phones taking videos and pictures! We saw the pope pass us waving, and it was exciting and overwhelming. It was the best 10 seconds of my life.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 By Arianna Richards, 4th Grade

One day Rose, Kernel Corn, and Citron wanted to go golfing so they went to the Putt Shack. Once they got there they saw Peashooter and said “Hello Peashooter seems like your golfing too. Would you like to join us?”

Peashooter said “Yes I’m going golfing and I would be delighted to join you guys!”

Then once they got their golf equipment they began to practice and each took turns, but when it was Rose’s turn she accidently hit the ball to hard and it fell into a pond that was 10 feet deep. After that she raced over to the pond and called over her friends to come and help. They did.

Peashooter suggested “We should ask for a rope.”

Rose said “Ok, I’ll go get the rope and you three can chill here till I come back with the rope.”

They said “Ok.”

Then when she got back with the rope peashooter told them to tie the rope around him so that he could go under the water to get the golf ball and so they did. Once they pulled peashooter back up they were amazed and they played a few more golf games until it was evening.

In the morning Peashooter, Citron, and Kernel Corn went over to Rose’s house and played video games in the afternoon the three went over to Peashooter’s house and Citron’s house for a little while and in the evening they went over to Kernel Corn’s place and played games, watched videos, and then they all went to sleep.

My last day with my friend (well almost the last) By Kamari Brown, 3rd Grade

The (almost) last day with my friend was the weirdest day of my life. Well, anyway I will tell the tale of the (almost) last day with my friend. On October 31, 2010 my friend Jimmy and I went trick-or- treating. We went to the scariest house on the block. Number 832 was the scariest house on the block. We went there last. We had a lot of candy. Most of it was just weird looking, so we just threw it away.

We knew we weren’t allowed to eat weird looking candy. When we arrived at the haunted house a hand from under the tombstone got a great grip on my leg. Jimmy pulled him off. But then, Jimmy got grabbed by the tombstone Skeleton I pulled Jimmy and the skeleton’s hand fell apart. But after that a ghost appeared and said it was my soul. I knew it wasn’t my soul. It was so obvious.” I’M STILL ALIVE YOU FOOLISH GHOST” said. I looked in the window of the haunted house I saw nothing. Then I looked a second later, there was a zombie. Jimmy said “we’ve got to get out of here bro”. “I could never agree more buddy” I said. But the skeleton grabbed Jimmy. Jimmy almost went down with the undertaking skeleton arm. But luckily I rescued Jimmy be-cause I wasn’t losing my friend on my watch.

Farewell Mr. Reynolds!! We will miss you!! Happy Retirement!

Kitty Hawk: Where Dreams Take Flight! By Mrs. Mannepalli

The airplane plays a significant part in the world’s transportation and economy. After all, we cannot imag-ine life without quickly travelling across the oceans and continents. I was thrilled when an opportunity presented itself to visit the birthplace of powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It was more signifi-cant for me because I lived on a rocket launching station before we immigrated to America and aero-space is deeply intertwined with our lives.

The advancement in aerospace has been phenomenal. My grandmother born 6 years before the first flight by Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk in 1903, saw within her life time, Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon!

Driving through the Outer Banks in North Carolina to reach Kitty Hawk was a pleasant experience. The weather was excellent and the traffic was not heavy. I should note that the wind was sustained. Inci-dentally the strong and sustained wind was the prime reason Wright Brothers’ selected Kitty Hawk for their experiment.

First, we went to the Wright Brothers National Memorial park. Our guide told us that it was here that the concept of “impossible” was buried. There are four large stone markers for each flight they took on that day. Next, we visited the museum. The photo of Wilber Wright running along the side of their flying plane is one of the most iconic pictures in the world! It is the second most reproduced picture in the world, next only to Neil Armstrong's foot print on the Moon. A full scale model of their first plane is also displayed on site. We ended our tour by visiting the Wright Brothers monument located on top of a hillock.

There is an inspiring lesson to all our students. Before the Wright brothers, many famous engineers and scientists spent millions of dollars but couldn't succeed. The Wright brothers, two bicycle mechanics with only high school education and modest means, accomplished what others thought was impossible. This proves that there is nothing a person cannot accomplish if she/he is driven by an original idea and enthu-siasm!!!
