www.olivenhain.org 1 Happy Spring Olivenhain! It is wonderful to have these longer days, (of sunlight that is) to just get more done and yes, maybe a bit sleepy in the morning with the darkness, but it seems like you can get more accomplished in a day. I just love it and it also means summer is right around the corner, not that I am trying to speed up time, at all! Last month we had an accomplished workday at the OTC grounds, thanks to Twink Bumann for organizing the day and for the incredible goodies to snack on. I want to personally thank the participants who took time out of their Saturday morning to come help. We had a nice turn out and completed everything that was on the list! Thank you to the OTC Board and Chair members that were present and thank you to, Kyla Wilson, Blake Spangenberg, Chris Hyndman, Nate and Katy Knorek, Gage Janzman, Bryan Jung, Romy Beigel and Chris Schenthuizen and Richard Bumann, (please forgive spelling errors) and if I forgot anyone thank you as well. It means so much to have the help of the community on days like this and appreciate it very much! If you couldn’t make the workday, do not fret, we can always use a lot of helping hands at our largest Spring Event, the Annual Beer and Brat Fest, April 29th, the last Sunday of the month. Come out to enjoy one of the best deals around for a day of fun with families and your community. We will have the usual fanfare of incredible food, local brews and it wouldn’t be complete without music from Earl Flores and his band. Thank you to our local sponsor for the event, James Jam with Prudential California Realty, who has continued to be the title sponsor for many years straight, we appreciate the support James! Come on out for a brat, a brew and let kids have fun in the inflatable jumpers while you enjoy an afternoon in the sun. Please visit inside the Meeting Hall where you will find local Arts and Crafts for sale as well, a little something for everyone! Surprise Alert: The OTC BOD has created the T-Shirt that will soon be for sale and will be ready at the Beer and Brat. I have personally been waiting for this for the last few years and they will be available in less than a month, so get ready for the new design and I have a feeling the first run will sell out fast so bring some extra bucks with you to style the entire family with shirts. The proceeds of all the OTC sales go straight back to the maintenance and preservation of the grounds and historic buildings that we enjoy year round. You can always find the Olivenhain license plate frames, Beer Steins, Cookbooks and Historic Books at The Postal Corner on Rancho Santa Fe Rd, please stop in, support your local business and pick up something for a family member or a new neighbor. Thank you Postal Corner for your support! Speaking of new neighbors, if you meet someone new to the area, a great welcome to the Neighborhood would be to sign them up for this monthly Newsletter so they can stay informed of what is happening in Olivenhain. You will soon be seeing our Membership Drive Banner hanging up at the Meeting Hall and we are intent on driving up our membership, so any help you can provide would be appreciated. “Colony Olivenhain” History Book

In 1981, Richard Bumann, descendent of one of the original colonists, published a local history book titled Colony Olivenhain. You can order using the order form on the cover sheet, or stop by and pick one up at the Postal Corner in

Olivenhain Platz, on the corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Encinitas Boulevard.

On April 22, 2012, from 11:00am – 4:00pm, the Encinitas Preservation Association will be hosting the Boathouse Plus Architectural Tour. The tour will begin at the historic Bumann Ranch, a 10-acre homestead built in 1886 in Olivenhain. For the past 125 years, the Bumann Ranch has been the home to three generations of Bumanns. The ranch has been carefully preserved — the buildings and contents are entirely original and unchanged — which provides visitors with a taste of what homestead life was like in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This is a unique opportunity to see the only working ranch in

Encinitas that has survived into the 21st century.

The Bumann Ranch is one of many Encinitas gems that are a part of this extraordinary Architectural Tour. The tour

also features the Self-Realization Hermitage and Gardens, the Derby House, the School House, La Paloma Theatre, and the Boathouses. This is an event for the whole family and for anyone who wants to learn more about the

beginnings of old Encinitas.

Tickets are available for purchase in advance at Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association and Coast Hwy Traders. On the day of the tour, tickets will be available to purchase at the School House, Boathouses and Coast Hwy Traders. Tickets are $25 and children under 12 can enjoy the tour

for free.

Encinitas Garden Festival & Tour 2012

April 21 from 10 am to 4 pm

Each year, the Encinitas Garden Festival & Tour visits one of Encinitas’ unique neighborhoods for a self-guided walking tour. On that day, tourgoers stroll through as many as 25 gardens. Because this is a walking tour, visitors get an upclose view of each neighborhood, along with a genuine feel for its texture and

the character of its residents.

The festival celebrates all types of gardens, and all types of gardeners, with a special focus on how homeowners use their spaces. Every neighborhood brings its own surprises. Gardens

range from small and intimate to grand and formal.

This year, the festival visits a hidden corner of Leucadia where garden tourists will stroll through a tropical oasis filled with rare plants, a private sanctuary garden with French touches, an historic Spanish home and garden, a birder’s paradise of native plants, a canyon side garden with stunning views of habitat and

ocean, several artists’ gardens and much, much more!

The festival also features a free Gardener’s Marketplace offering a unique collection of garden-related vendors and talks by garden experts on topics such as backyard vineyards, gardening with natives, chicken gardening, children’s gardening

and using art in the garden.

To find where to purchase tickets in person, by mail order, or online, or to learn more about the Encinitas Garden Festival &

Tour, go to

For those residents of Olivenhain who have not been actively supporting the efforts to halt the high-density project at the end of Desert Rose, the time to come off the sidelines is nearing. It was recently disclosed in a meeting with City officials that high-density projects are the only ones currently under development in Encinitas. This has mostly to do with the economics of making more profit by building more homes on a given lot and the lack of large land parcels available for development in Encinitas. This could mean that other parcels, similar in size to the lot at the end of Desert Rose, could be targets for high-density building. Up until now, the only image of high-density has been conjured up in our minds. Now, there are a couple of projects under development that give us a clear idea of what it would mean to our community. The high-density projects

pictured below shows what we have only been able to imagine.

The Save Desert Rose Steering Committee has been diligently working with an attorney, biologists, hydrologist, fire safety experts and traffic safety consultants to attempt to limit the developer’s ability to build twice the number of homes on the

parcel than it was zoned for. If the developer is successful in bringing this blight on Olivenhain, it will surely open the door to similar developments throughout our neighborhood. Aside from the fact that this type of building is so inconsistent with the character of our community, we mustn’t overlook that it will over-burden our emergency services, add upwards of 250 additional vehicle trips daily onto Rancho Santa Fe and threaten the stability of the neighboring and downstream wetlands. We must stand united against this proposed high-density project in

our community.

The committee was told that it is possible that this issue will come before the City Planning Commission in May. Please visit SDR’s website at www.savedesertrose.com to make a contribution and to learn more. Please subscribe on the website so that you can receive emails about upcoming meetings and important issues. Your financial support and presence at the City meetings may make the difference between preserving Olivenhain as we know it today or having it become just another

testament to urban sprawl.
