Bulletin Déc 2016 Janvier 2017 Page 1 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT My first year as President of the Confederation Chapter was lots of fun but also very challenging due to the lack of participation and financial support by members. The financial support (annual dues) helps the Chapter to sponsor a portion of costs for certain events, enabling us to give a reduced price for events. I am taking this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who helped me during the year, especially Claude and Aline. At the Annual General Meeting that took place at Delicious Steak House on November 14 th , 2016, it was approved by the attendees that my mandate would be renewed and that the annual dues would be increased from $10 to $15 in 2017. If you have suggestions for future events, do not hesitate to send it to “ [email protected]” or Facebook at “Confederation Chapter, Heritage Club”. HOUSEKEEPING INFORMATION Volunteering : The motto of the Heritage Club is “People helping People” and we would like to know of any activity you are currently participating in that benefits people and/or the community and how many hours you spend at it per month. This is one of the criteria that each Chapter is measured upon Canada Post, and it affects our yearly funding. Santa Letter Program: Are you participating or want to participate in the Santa Letter Program in 2017, the Confederation Chapter could look for a space where all the members could gather and answer to Santa letters, depending on the number of interested members. Please give us your feedback by email at “Confederation_Chapter.bell.net”.

TIPS AND SAFEGUARDS TO PREVENT FRAUDS AND SCAMS FOR OLDER CANADIANS

Keep all personal documents in a secure place. If you do not need them, do not carry your birth certificate, passport or Social Insurance Number (SIN) card.

Never tell another person your PIN or passwords and ensure to cover your hand when entering your PIN at bank machines and when making store purchases.

Safely dispose of old bills and statements – shredding is best. Do not click on pop-up windows or respond to e-mails, open attachments or go to Web site links sent by

people you do not know. Your bank or credit union will not send you anything by e-mail unless you ask them to.

Never give out your credit card number, bank account or personal information to someone over the phone, at the door, or over the Internet unless you know the person or organization you are dealing with, or you made the contact.

Do not sign an agreement or contract to buy anything without giving yourself time to think it over. If a salesperson insists that an “offer” is “time limited” and you must decide at that moment, it is probably better not to buy.

Be suspicious if someone you do not know asks you to send them money or a cheque, or to return money they “accidentally” sent you.

Before hiring someone or agreeing to have work done on your home, ask for proof of identify and references and check them.

For more information, visit www.seniors.gc.ca or visit your local Service Canada office.
