Message from the first year guardian Dear first year students

As first year guardian, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you. Congratulations on being selected to study either Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology! It is definitely an achievement seeing that so many interested would-be students had applied. You will soon realise, when speaking to your friends in other departments, that our department is the best. We are a relatively small department and therefore, although always remaining professional, we function as a family. Here you will meet mentors that you will always refer to in your future professional life, future colleagues, and life-long friends.

You will be able to rely on the staff for support - academic as well as support with personal matters. As your year guardian, I am available to assist you with academic and personal issues. I believe in a holistic approach – a happy student is a successful student – so please feel free to visit me in my office (room 3-1.1).

You will find that we all work very hard – lecturers as well as students – and that is why we are the top department in the faculty and also the best Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology department in the country. Although you will have to work hard to give your absolute best, you will also find that there are many enjoyable moments and events that will reinforce the decision you have made to enrol for one of the degrees offered here.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you!

Kind regards,

Mrs Mia le Roux

Academic Staff

Message from the Head of Department

Professor Bart Vinck

Dear new students and future colleagues,

First of all I want to welcome you on behalf of the Department and the Faculty of Humanities and want to thank you and your parents for having received your trust in our University to provide you with a highly specialised academic training in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. I am convinced that this is for all of you a major step forward in life, since your studies here will determine not only your future professional life but also the life of your future clients in the real clinical practice. To make this transition as smooth as possible, we have a motivated team of excellent academic and support staff members available and an elected group of students (House Committee) who will be here to support and assist you. If you need help of any kind, please come forward and just ask them. My door is also always open for each of you. I wish you a fantastic year full of exciting learning opportunities, full of interesting social experiences, new friends, and very important: a good result at the end of the year. Welcome! Prof. dr. BHME Vinck Head of Department

Dr Jeannie Van Der Linde A sentence or two about yourself I am a speech-language pathologist, a wife and a mom of two beautiful children. I am the head of speech-language pathology in the department. I love animals and enjoy a good book. Your field of interest and research My fields of interests are voice disorders and improving access to care (early intervention) in underserved communities.

One piece of advice for our first years Never lose sight of your dreams, always try to see the bigger picture Dr Leigh Biagio-De Jager

A sentence or two about yourself I am senior lecturer in Audiology and the head of Audio. I have four furbabies - 3 bassets and 1 yorkie. I spent 15 years in private practice in Pretoria and Cape Town, and worked in paediatrics overseas, and even had time to play golf before landing up here at UP four years ago. Your field of interest and research Auditory electrophysiology, otoacoustic emissions, broadband immittance and telehealth are my areas of research. In other words objective assessment - basically all the tests where the patient gets to relax and sleep

while I do all the work! One piece of advice for our first years There is a big jump from being at school. You no longer have teachers that provide you with every single bit of knowledge during classes. You have lecturers who guide you, provide structure and point you in the right direction. In other words - facilitate your learning. Lectures are fast paced and are jam-packed full of new information. In order to keep up, prepare beforehand and work independently to revise the work thereafter. So university students have a much more active role to play than scholars in determining the outcome of their own studies. Own it! I know you will love it!

One piece of advice for our first years

You have chosen to study at a great department and at a great university. You have also chosen outstanding professions. The knowledge, skills and empathy of audiologists and speech-language therapists can significantly improve the lives of our clients across the lifespan. Your first year of learning to become an audiologist or a speech-language therapist matters a great deal, because each one of you matters. My best wishes to you all. I am looking forward to seeing you in class. - Prof K.

It is compulsory, as these four years will be the best of your life.

Mrs Talita Le Roux A sentence or two about yourself I am an audiologist and mother of the two most beautiful princess girls. Your field of interest and research Cochlear implants, aural rehabilitation (counselling and parent-guidance), childhood hearing loss. One piece of advice for our first years Keep the balance! One piece of advice for our first years

Frequently asked questions

1. How many lectures does a first year in this department have every week? During the first semester, approximately 20 lectures per week. Mondays are quite long. Students are recommended to bring a snack, drink and lunch along as there is not a lot of time to walk around campus to buy food or drinks on a Monday. There is a vending machine on the ground floor of the Communication Pathology building (our building).

2. Where do I go on the first day of lectures? The Communication Pathology building Room 4-4 (all the way up the stairs and across the roof). All departmental lectures (SWL, KMP, SPP and ODL) are presented in our building.

3. Do I have to attend all lectures? Yes, attendance is compulsory. Good class attendance is also associated with successful completion of modules.

4. I heard we have anatomy lectures on another campus. How do I get there? ANA is presented by Mr C Jacobs at the Basic Medical Sciences building (Basiese Mediese Wetenskappe gebou) at the Prinshof campus of UP. There is a bus that shuttles students between main campus and Prinshof regularly every day. ANA lectures commence at 7:30 on a Thursday morning (while the bus only departs at 7:30) and therefore it is recommended that students make use of alternative means of transport. Students in this department usually help each other with opportunities to get to and from campus for ANA lectures.

5. I see other students wearing uniforms. Do I have to wear a uniform every day? No, students only wear uniforms when completing practical work. First year students have minimal practical work and may only require a uniform for one or two opportunities during the first year. Second years and senior students wear uniforms often – please plan accordingly.

Page 20: Message from the first year guardian - UP · Message from the first year guardian Dear first year students . As first year guardian, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you

6. What is the uniform in the department? Navy bottoms (trousers or skirts) and white tops (blouses or shirts) with a name badge. Many students prefer wearing navy scrubs. The House Committee will assist students to place orders for scrubs and other clothing items during the year. Each first year student will receive a name badge from the department this year.

7. I want to talk to senior students. How do I get in touch with them? The House Committee is available at any time for any first year’s questions. The chairperson, Angenita, will be able to assist you with finding senior students to talk to. See the HC pages later in this book. The HC also pairs each first year with a second year ‘buddy’ so that you always have one older student to ask if you have questions.

8. How do I know which text books to buy? What about second-hand books? Ask the lecturer if you are unsure. Read the study guide: Prescribed books are ‘must-haves’. Recommended books are nice to have. Be sure to compare prices between the bookshops in Hatfield, on campus, and across from the campus (Wize books). Senior students often sell second-hand books, which are less costly. Make sure you have the correct edition of the book.

9. What does it mean if a lecturer says ‘reading work’? Do I have to summarise the textbook and study the work? Reading work refers to more in-depth information on the topic covered in the lecture so it is important to read thoroughly in order to grasp the main concepts. Reading is not memorizing. Reading supports your understanding of a topic. Please attend to the scope of reading work that the lecturer recommends. Talk to the tutor about study methods for a university student as your method of studying will now be different from how you studied in school.

10. Where can I find old test and exam papers to help me prepare? Use the AIS (the library) to find old papers. Speak to senior students for tips on how to prepare for tests and exams in different subjects.

Page 21: Message from the first year guardian - UP · Message from the first year guardian Dear first year students . As first year guardian, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you

11. What modules and how many credits do I need in my first year?

First year of study: (121 credits) Fundamental modules AIM 101 Academic information management ALL 110 Academic literacy and ALL 125 Academic literacy for Humanities or SEP 110 Sepedi or ZUL 110 isiZulu 110 or Setswana 110 Core modules ANA 111 Anatomy FSG 110 Physiology FSG 120 Physiology KMP 110 Human communication KMP 120 Human communication ODL 110 Audiology ODL 120 Audiology ODL 181 Audiology: Practical SLK 110 Psychology SLK 120 Psychology SPP 110 Speech-language pathology SPP 120 Speech-language pathology SPP 181 Speech-language pathology: Practical SWL 101 Speech science SWL 111 Speech science SWL 181 Speech science

12. I am already feeling overwhelmed. Is this normal? Yes, take a deep breath. If you constantly feel overwhelmed or anxious even after a few months of being at the university, you can speak to Mrs Mia le Roux (first year guardian) or even contact student counselling services on campus 012 420 2333. In case of emergencies you can use the UP Careline 0800 747 747.

13. I think I may have a hearing or a speech difficulty. Can I do something about it? Students in our department can receive services free of charge. It is recommended that you speak to Dr Jeannie van der Linde or Dr Leigh Biagio-de Jager as soon as you can. Mrs Mia le Roux, or any of the other staff members that you may feel comfortable with may also assist.

Page 22: Message from the first year guardian - UP · Message from the first year guardian Dear first year students . As first year guardian, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you

14. Where do I go if I become ill? Where do I find a doctor? You can contact Student health services on campus (Monday to Friday) directly opposite the Roosmaryn building: 012 420 2500.

15. I need to see a dentist but don’t know who to contact. Students are welcome to contact the School of Dentistry for appointments and arrangements (Prinshof campus) at 012 319 2212/2619.

16. I have difficulty attending, concentrating, reading or writing. Is there something I can do to help me with my studies? Yes, you can approach any lecturer in the department for assistance. Students may be granted additional time during tests or exams as a concession by Student support services or the Disability unit (012 420 2064 or [email protected]).

17. I am very excited about this course and would like to learn more about what speech-language therapists and audiologists do. Who can I ask about observing and SLT or A in practice? If you are interested in observing student services within our own clinic, you may contact Ms Renata Mosca (Speech-language therapy) or Mrs Christine Louw (Audiology). Alternatively speak to any lecturer that you feel comfortable with. The South African Speech, Language and Hearing Association (SASLHA) may be of value: www.saslha.co.za

18. How will I know what to do if the campus is disrupted for some reason? First year students will be added to a WhatsApp group with their class reps and certain lecturing staff in the Department. In emergency situations, you will be notified via WA on what to do. If you are not using WA at present, please download the application using the Wi-Fi in the department.

19. May I contact my lecturers on their cell phones? Unless a staff member explicitly gave you permission to do so, you should rather contact them via email. A staff member’s email address is usually [email protected]. Your lecturer’s email address is in the study guides of the modules they present to you. See the section on how to communicate in an email later in this booklet.

Page 23: Message from the first year guardian - UP · Message from the first year guardian Dear first year students . As first year guardian, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you

20. Am I allowed to ask a lecturer questions at their offices? Yes of course! Seeing as lecturers may not be in their offices when you need them, you are advised to ask questions in lectures, or to make an appointment via email to see a lecturer. If a lecturer is in her/his office and the door is open, you may knock and ask whether you may come in. If the door is closed the staff member is not available.

How to communicate in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology:

1. The department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology is not only

an academic department, but also a clinic that attends to the needs of clients with a range of communication and hearing disorders. It is also a friendly place, and therefore students and staff greet each other and are courteous to clients of the clinic at all times.

2. When in need of assistance on any administrative or academic query, ask your first year guardians.

3. For questions or concerns about subject matter in individual modules, you may contact the lecturer in charge of the module. Each module has a study guide containing the lecturer’s contact details and consultation hours. In case of illness or absence from a test or examination, you are required to contact the lecturer involved in the module within 2 days (48hours) of your absence. Don’t hesitate to notify a lecturer about any concerns regarding their modules.

4. When in need of assistance, you are advised to make an appointment with a staff member. This will ensure that the staff member has sufficient time to attend to your needs. Staff member’s consultation times are available in each module’s study guide. Alternatively, you may make an appointment via email.

5. Email is the preferred method of communication. Acquire your own email address as soon as possible if you don’t already have one and ensure that you check your inbox daily for updates from the class representatives and lecturers. Emails are answered by staff members during office hours. Address the person using the correct title and surname; state the question/concern and your need clearly and concisely. End the email using ‘kind regards’ and your name and surname. Use professional language and punctuation. Always remember to ask questions related to tests and examinations in advance in order to obtain the answer you require in time. The following is an example of how to email a staff member:

Page 25: Message from the first year guardian - UP · Message from the first year guardian Dear first year students . As first year guardian, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you

Dear Prof/Dr/Mrs/Mr/Ms. I am a first year student in __ [module name]. I have the following concern/question [state the concern/question]. I would like to know [state what you need the staff member to do]. Kind regards, Name and surname of student

6. You may use telephone numbers provided to contact staff members

during office hours. Address the staff member using the correct title and surname and state your name and surname. Enquire whether the staff member is able to take your phone call and proceed to state your question/concern/need. Refrain from using staff members’ cell phone numbers for phone calls, sms and WhatsApp messages.

7. Familiarise yourself with the titles of the staff members and address each person appropriately during personal contact. Staff members should be addressed by their title and surname.
