Message from the Chair and President
The first Junior Achievement
program started in our province in
1985. At that time 25 years ago, we
served 159 students in St. John’s. Fast
forwarding to 2009-10, our cumulative
provincial reach has surpassed
93,000 students in communities
throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador. Specific to 2009-10,
volunteer mentors shared their
enthusiasm to over 4,000 students
on work readiness, fi nancial literacy
and entrepreneurship topics.
Junior Achievement has achieved this milestone as you, our donors, volunteers and other
partners, understand the importance of working with youth to build their capacity and
ultimately the capacity of our province. Fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and creating
opportunities for teamwork and critical thinking are essential in preparing youth for the
exciting challenges that lie ahead.
As we refl ect on the past year, JA has had a positive infl uence on youth, has created new
and exciting partnerships and has enhanced organizational processes which include creating
a donor recognition framework, developing a risk management plan and setting strategic
priorities. Financially, this was a very strong year; however, this cannot be looked at in
isolation as in the previous year, delays in anticipated revenue confi rmations resulted in a
shortfall.
Another highlight of the year was the induction of Fred Cahill, Gordon Manstan and Great
Big Sea into the 2010 Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of
Fame. These individuals are truly role models for our youth.
Now, as we focus on the future, we look forward to continued collaborations with you.
Together, we will educate and inspire youth to succeed.

Our Business World provides practical information to elementary students about the
organization and operation of a business in a free enterprise. Topics are presented to
the students by a business volunteer trained by Junior Achievement. By means of lively
discussions and class activities that are age appropriate, the basic elements of business are
introduced and related to their underlying economic principles.
Economics for Success is an interactive program designed to encourage junior high
students to consider and refl ect on the advantages of remaining in school until they have
acquired the knowledge, attitudes and skills to undertake the longer-term goal of a successful
career. This program is delivered through lessons facilitated by one or more business
volunteers in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
Dream Big, a program for senior high school students, helps them set goals and defi ne a
vision for their future. It focuses on the importance of character, integrity and work ethic.
Through discussions and interactive exercises, students are encouraged to explore their
personal potential.
Program Descriptions
JA Titan introduces high school students to critical economics and management decisions
through an interactive, web- or CD-ROM-based simulation. Students are challenged to
navigate the dynamic changes of our technology-driven global marketplace as they plan
and execute each aspect of a virtual company’s strategy (price, production, research and
development, marketing, capital investment and charitable giving) while competing in the
Holo-Generator industry to become the JA Titan of Industry.
Company Program – A Student Venture offers high school students the opportunity to
learn about the process involved in the conception, organization, operation and completion
of a fi scal cycle of a business. Guided by volunteers from the business community,
participants develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to help them increase
their entrepreneurial and leadership skills, while experiencing the activities involved in
offering and delivering a product or service by running a student-led enterprise.
