A Story about Hurricane Harvey....

All - I've been checked-on and checked-in with you all being safe. I imagine David Patrick is in the middle of this. Prayers for Louisi-ana.

I just want to share, as most of you have been home bound and shut in, I was 60 miles north of the eye of this storm for two days between Victoria and Austin. We witness a ranch become a lake and when it drained it took out the highway with a huge sink hole. I was shut in with 10 women! Now that sounds scary but it was an auction weekend we jointly bought at Houston Safari Club. So we were fearless, licensed to carry and know how to shoot! (Myself best with a camera). I feel guilty to admit what a fun “extend-ed” weekend it was. I was the only single woman and got big chuckles from the hunter husbands that couldn't find the coffee pot much less use it. The men stayed in touch with safe routes home as we were from all over Texas.

We had 3 early runners and Sandra Sadler could get home but chose to lend her moral support and suffer with us. We ate, drank, watched chick flicks and survived rain and wind and mighty oaks tumbling! The hus-bands had driven all exits in my area and I knew 1-10 was open eastbound and 610 west was now open as well as my San Felipe exit...so we bolted Tuesday afternoon and never had rain until Katy. This was against advice from Mike Feehery (FBM-SPI) who made me call him upon arrival...thanks! He had retrieved one daughter and separated from the other.

From the ranch location the local news was San Antonio and Austin. We got reports of folk going to Houston with boats! One gentle-man interview said he just went to Cabelas

and bought this boat! Really said the news-caster- “That’s amazing - you bought this boat and trailer to go to Houston to help out!” He answered “Well I was damn lucky to get this one they are selling out everyone’s on the road to get there...if you don’t have a boat go buy one!” The trip home was eye opening of great help to come. The Highway Patrol was pulling no less than 100 big 50 passenger buses lined up

and staged for ‘go ahead’ to get to Houston. The military trucks were on the move. Every other vehicle was a truck pulling a boat. And they were staging supply trucks...all sitting on go ahead orders...so you knew the Calvary was on its way!

We had clear travel until we got escorted to one lane and crawl at Dairy Ashford exit. The Katy HOV was double lane parked trucks with empty boat trailers as well as south side of I-10 as far as you could see. When we got to rescue area responders were literally pulling folks over highway wall...people, dogs and cats, few belongings etc. As soon as they were pulled over the wall a truck awaited and got them out of there. It was so organized and heart warming. There were 4 helicopters that I could see. It looked like a war zone. I know a lot has been on TV but first hand was over-whelming.

I got home and got to my daughters to pick up my dog. All safe and dry there and clear passage for the two miles between us. My building had some water damage but my home fine with no issues and we never lost power or more importantly elevators! I'm too old for 6 flights to walk the dog!

I sat here Wednesday blessed, blessed and GUILTY and a need to get off my duff and do SOME-THING. Thursday I made sandwiches and filled my insulated SWICA bags with water and headed out to a bayou area near me. It looked like war zone and folks dragging everything they had to street. I found a home that had set them self up as welcome center...Huge BBQ pit, tents, food being cooked from everyone's freezers. Lawn chairs set up for group hugs and happy hour. The spirit was amazing. I dropped my stuff and visited a bit. These folks were doing what needed to be done and helping neighbors and cheerful. One lady told me to ‘eat the cheese I'm not bringing it home!’ Everyone was so appreciative in light of adversity. I just had to figure how to do more.

That afternoon I grabbed my neighbor and we headed for NRG Stadium Exhibit Hall to volunteer. I took the route through the bayou neighborhood so my neighbor could see the tent area. As we passed 3 firemen were approaching for food and folks milling about.

NRG was so organized...Unbelievable! It took about 20 minute to register as volunteer with Baker

Ripley Community Organizers to get my color coded wrist-band. At this point you have no idea what's ahead. We are sent upstairs to wait with coffee and drinks. We had to register if we spoke a language or had an expertise. Then we got called in groups and moved to exhibit floor.

I was jaw dropping astounded to see the exhibit hall filled with cots as in rows ...can you imagine how many! They had single women, single men and family sections. I was assigned to be an intake greeter...the lime wristband folks who just got deposited by bus. We were told 30 buses were on way.

We greeted a family of 7 that had NOTHING..a high water boat rescue from Wilcrest area. They became our duty to get them settled. They did not have a pet, but had they, we would first take then to pet area for vet and ability to free microchip and get a crate should they not have one. Pets then stayed with their family next to their cot. Pet food and pet toys and everything pet was stacked 8' high.

My family wanted to eat before another step so we escorted them to cafe area where HEB was handing out hot meals, water, chips snacks you name it. Everything moved along as the volunteer turnout was tremendous. We did not eat until the family joined hands and prayed with thanks. We gladly filled the circle of prayer!

Next was the tour on the way to their cots. The library for computer access, the all phone service charging station, FEMA, legal aid, church aid, plain old information, barber shop...all services covered. Of course we had to stop along the way for our little 7 year old to play on the drums.Several musicians turned up to entertain and let the kids play their instruments and dancing broke out! The spirit was tremendous!

We secured 7 cots and now off to shop for basic needs. You had a volunteer take down your sizes needed, towels, blankets, toiletries, etc, they handed it of to another volunteer who filled order and returned to give rescue requested needs. That goods filled an exhibit hall and was all NEW goods. So off we went to home base.

At far end of hall is Kid zone...a day care staffed center for kids with social workers on the floor playing and kids as always having a great time. Again toys and books stacked 8' high. No needs

left unfilled. You had to register your child, and they even had special needs volunteers if needed, and you could leave them to play and all get a break from being pent up. Again all so efficiently organized.

There were no lines anywhere a volunteer rushed in and made it happen. After we got our family settled we went back to intake area. No one entered new except at the far end of hall...NOT an intake area...there came such a clatter we rose to see what could possibly be the matter. Our leader was irritated that a loose bus must have used the wrong entry. Well that could not be possible...The police and state troopers had NRG traffic moving and precisely in control. But there was a mass of huge people moving our way! You gotta love this...the Texans were home and strolled into NRG (less JJ) walked right into family area and spread out throwing small foot-balls they signed for everyone. Hugging every-one and signing anything put in front of them. I knew they canceled their game and wanted to get home from Dallas but this was over the top! They just hung out and were just great guys happy to be home and a part of the city spirit. One little girl passed me running and stopped and looked at me through tears and squealed "I'm never letting this football go" I'm in tears just telling the story.

The heroic deeds still go on...This City isHOUSTON STRONG!

The NIA Fall Summit attendees and NIA member companies exhibiting at IEX USA, NIA and its leaders have decided to reschedule the Fall Summit for December 12–13, and hold it alongside Reed Exhibitions’ IEX USA trade show.

Supporting HoustonPlease know we have taken all member feedback into consideration and believe this to be the best possible option given these difficult circumstanc-es. Our first priority before making this decision

was the safety of Houston’s residents and our members in the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. We have heard from several sources in Houston that they will be ready for business by December and rescheduling our meeting will help support Houston’s businesses and residents during their recovery process.

Other ConsiderationsWe know that these are not ideal dates, but once Reed Exhibitions rescheduled their show, we felt it was important to support our member compa-nies that were already committed to exhibiting at IEX USA. We also recognized that it would be more cost effective for NIA members to travel to one show instead of two.

OSHA launches application to electronically submit injury and illness data on August 1

WASHINGTON – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will launch on Aug. 1, 2017, the Injury Tracking Application (ITA). The Web-based form allows employers to electroni-cally submit required injury and illness data from their completed 2016 OSHA Form 300A.

The application will be accessible from the ITA webpage.

Last month, OSHA published a notice of pro-posed rulemaking to extend the deadline for submitting 2016 Form 300A to Dec. 1, 2017, to allow affected entities sufficient time to famil-iarize themselves with the electronic reporting system, and to provide the new administration an opportunity to review the new electronic reporting requirements prior to their implemen-tation.

The data submission process involves four steps: (1) Creating an establish-ment; (2) adding 300A summary data; (3) submitting data to OSHA; and (4) reviewing the confirmation email. The secure website offers three options for data submission. One option will enable users to manually enter data into a web form. Another option will give users the ability to upload a CSV file to process single or multiple establishments at the same time. A third option will allow users of automated recordkeeping systems to transmit data electronically via an application programming inter-face.

Houston, Texas, at the George R. Brown Conven-tion Center.

Insulation Health and Safety for Piping SystemsThe health and safety of building materials are a priority in industrial facilities—including insula-tion. In terms of insulation safety and health properties, not all types of insulation are equal.

MoldFor years, fibrous glass materials have been incorrectly cited for contributing to mold growth. The fact is, mold can grow in any environment where there’s moisture, a food source for mold spores and the appropriate temperature, so many organic materials can be food for mold. Fiberglass and mineral wool insulation are both inorganic, and therefore don’t feed mold growth. Furthermore, testing in accordance with UL1 and ASTM2 standards confirm that fiberglass insulation does not support mold growth.Even though some products claim to be mold-resistant, mold can grow on ANY surface under the right conditions. In order to prevent microbial growth, moisture must be controlled.

We are well aware many of our SWICA member companies and many of our members have been displaced due to both storms. Black Horse Golf Course was flooded and still not open fully until September 29th. We are grateful that we can have this opportunity to get together and share a fun day and our stories. We know you may have not had the opportunity, electronics or ability to make a commitment to play. Don’t let that stop you! Pour the water out of your golf bag and join us last minute. You need to hit something...let it be a golf ball! We want you to be with our family. So Call Linda @ SWICA office/cell: 281-435-3859 or e-mail: [email protected]. We are trying to get this newsletter out early (if Post Office participates) so you’ll know you are welcome.

Our doors are open. Our clothes come in every size. There’s hot food on the stove, and our cabinets are well-stocked. We promise to always share what we have.Soon, home will feel like home again, even if it seems like a lifetime away. We’ll be battling for football recruits under the Friday night lights. You’ll tell us to stop trying to barbeque. We’ll tell you to lay off your crawfish boil and come have the real thing. But for as long as you need, we’re here to help. The way of life you love the most will carry on. You taught us that. Your courage and care continues

to inspire our whole city. We couldn’t be more proud to call you our neighbors, our friends, and our family. Texas forever. We’re with you,

Aeroflex USA, Inc. Introduces Aerocel® ULP® Flexible Elastomeric InsulationAeroflex USA, Inc. has developed Aerocel® ULP® closed-cell EPDM insulation, offering the best water vapor and water resistance in the industry. Sweetwater, TN July 26, 2017 –

Aeroflex USA, Inc. introduces the newest version of Aerocel® EPDM elastomeric flexible closed-cell foam insulation. This newest intro-duction is called Aerocel® ULP®, that delivers exceptional water and water vapor transport properties, offering a permeance value of .005 perm-inch, and a water absorption rate of .01% by volume. Aerocel® ULP has been tested using both the wet cup and dry cup methods of determiningwater vapor permeance detailed in ASTM E96. Aerocel® ULP® offers moisture resistance performance better than any vapor retarder on the market, and a perm rating far lower than all rigid plastic foams or other elas-tomeric insulations. Aerocel® ULP® is a vapor retarder, helping ensure that the insulation system remains sealed against moisture. Offer-ing ease of installation, a high level of energy efficiency, and superior moisture resistance, Aerocel®ULP® is the ideal choice for cost-effec-tive installations on all low-temperature system insulation jobs, especially in high humidity and high temperature climates.Aerocel® ULP® is 38% more efficient than the next most-moisture-resistant insulation mate-rial, cellular glass. Less thickness of Aerocel® ULP® can be used, while delivering the excep-tional water and water vapor resistance desired for low temperature insulation systems, deliver-

ing high-level, constant,long-term insulating efficiency. Aerocel® ULP® does not contribute to and helps prevent corrosion under insulation, will not promote metal corrosion, and is not abrasive to system components. Aerocel® ULP® is the ideal insulation for all below-ambient mechanical systems, operating as low as -320°F, including chilled water, retail food case refrigeration, industrial refrigeration applications, glycol, brine, ammonia refrigera-tion, industrial gases, liquid methane, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and liquid oxygen systems.Aerocel® ULP® delivers a excellentf fire safety properties, having been rated as SELF-EXTIN-GUISHING , will not support micro-organisms, and does not contain CFC's, HFC’s and HCFC's.
