This year’s Sustainable Living Exhibition, which is now an established institution in the eThekwini Metro, takes place against the backdrop of a prolonged and devastating drought. We in the KZN COGTA are at the forefront of efforts to minimise the impact of this drought on our farmers and communities and we work closely with municipalities to ensure that our message about the need to conserve water reaches every single consumer of water services in this province. The drought

has thus added a new dimension to this exhibition by creating a need to showcase ways in which our people can live more sustainable lifestyles.

By making a case for the latest advances in water conservation and water harvesting, this exhibition provides a much needed platform for our businesses, municipalities, schools and communities to display and share ideas about sustainable living. In addition, broader philosophical aspects of sustainable living which include environmental advocacy, public health and social justice enable various activists from different sectors of civil society to complement the exhibition’s broader message to the public.

This drought is undoubtedly teaching us to adapt to climate change and to live more sustainably. It is often about simple things and simple ways of doing things, such as harvesting rain water for use in our households and gardens where so-called grey water would normally be used. It is these kinds of solutions that the Sustainable Living Exhibition reminds us of and, by sharing new techniques and insights, educates us about the profound changes taking place on our watch within our environment.

It is these small, everyday solutions to big challenges that have made the Sustainable Living Exhibition so popular with the public that it has inspired similar ventures in other provinces and enabled us as South Africans from KZN to share our unique solutions to a variety of pertinent global challenges with our fellow citizens. As we launch this exhibition in 2015, I have no doubt that we can rally as residents of this beautiful province to the cause of water conservation and channel our individual energies towards a common goal of creating caring and considerate communities which live, work and play in livable environments and whose actions help to create such environments for those who live, work and play around us.

It is indeed a proud moment for our Municipality as we open doors to the sixth Sustainable Living Exhibition to share ideas and information to make a difference for the planet.

2015 is not just any other year. In the words of our President Jacob Zuma during the State of the nation address he said “This is the year of going the extra mile in building a prosperous South Africa”. It is a year that represents an opportunity for transformation. It is meant to be a year of

global action,, the year we make history in moving the world towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

Since the very first launch of the Sustainable Living Exhibition in 2010, our citizenry have shown commitment in promoting awareness on environmental matters and drawing attention to living sustainably in an environmentally friendly manner. We appreciate your efforts and encourage you to keep up the momentum.

As we may know climate change is the most widespread and complex problem humanity has ever faced. The world as we know it is changing right before us and is creating more challenges and new opportunities. The causes are deeply embedded in the way we do things i.e. grow food, produce and use energy and consuming more than we need. This exhibition is the ideal platform to bring together businesses, individuals, NGOs, NPOs and government departments to showcase, inspire and share solutions to living more sustainable lifestyles. It opens doors for learning while also providing a fun environment and networking opportunities.

Sustainability is not a quick fix or “zonke bonke” approach (one size fit all), it is a process of reaching decisions with due diligence in the interests of all stakeholders. With this in mind we can build the kind of future we want for ourselves, neighbours and future generations.

Durban has for numerous years been implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and last year the Municipality was recognised globally for our efforts and achievements in climate action as we were part of the finalists in the Earth hour City Challenge. This is a worthy achievement and encouragement for us to keep working towards our goals.

The solution to our challenges is each person making a bold commitment to our common future. It requires ambition, dedication and leadership. Working together we can save tomorrow, today.

I would like to thank eThekwini Municipality and the Citizens of Durban for committing themselves to helping save the planet by making simple lifestyle changes. We need to build a city where living sustainably is easy, affordable and attractive. I urge all of us here today to become better stewards of our planet and city.
