After a long, cold winter of hibernation, my family and I are fully embracing all things that bring us outdoors this spring. Fortunately, as residents of Carp, there is no shortage of activities and incentives to embrace our natural surroundings.

Springtime means out with the old and in with the new. I’m excited to explore the treasures to be found at the annual Carp Colossal Garage Sale, (I may need to do some spring cleaning of my own to make room for the new finds). A personal favourite, the Carp Farmers’ Market, is also now in full swing, showcasing the best products and produce you can find in the region.

Big strides have been made on new local developments. The construction of Carp Commons Retirement Village is moving at full speed, and Ridge Rock Brewing Co. is getting ready to open its doors.

It is great to walk around the village and experience all of the new life and energy that is being infused into local businesses. I am feeling very grateful to consider Carp home.

Inside this issue, you will find a fresh community photo spread, two local business spotlights, an updated Carp business map, and a calendar of events. If we missed your business or event from our listings, please contact [email protected].

On behalf of the BIA, we wish you a fantastic and fruitful spring season.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Moon Stones Gallery & Marketplace

Spring is all about new beginnings, and the store at 416 Donald B. Munro Dr. experienced just that in its rebirth as the new home of Moon Stones Gallery & Marketplace. The light and airy gallery showcases

an impressive array of local art, textiles, and home décor, alongside the jewellery of owner and designer, Mary Louise. We caught up with the busy gallery owner to chat about her inspiration and what the first few months have been like in her new space.

Tell us a little bit about your businessI started out creating semi-precious gemstone and sterling silver jewellery. I travelled to Tucson Arizona each year to the biggest gem show in the world to select the stones I used to make these creations. I did lots of craft shows, and eventually landed a spot to showcase my jewellery at The Hive here in Carp. I had one jewellery case there for about 6 months

before the entire front room became available, and I moved my business into that room. I expanded my selection to include local artists who needed a space to showcase their work, and I sold their items on a consignment basis. I also brought in items that I came across that I thought were beautiful or interesting from various sources.

As my business grew, and more artists approached me to sell their work, I found that after only 18 months, I had outgrown the space.

I live in Dunrobin, and always take Thomas A. Dolan Parkway to drive into work. One day in the new year, I decided to come in from March Road to Donald B. Munro Drive, and I saw the ‘for rent’ sign at 416 Donald B. Munro Dr. I took a look at the property, and called the landlord the next morning at 9:20 a.m. to say I would take the space.

The landlord said she was expecting a call at 9:30 a.m. from another woman who also wanted the space. I was able to secure my new space with a margin of only 10 minutes.

Since moving in the beginning of April, I have added many new artists, each with their own story to tell, which is what I try to convey to my customers. Business and the people of Carp have been very good to me, and I am very happy in my new space.

What can people expect when they visit? What I am trying to create with my space is a calm, relaxing atmosphere that is filled with live plants, soft music, lovely artwork, and interesting and unusual items for sale. The property has numerous large windows, so the space is full of beautiful natural light.

Right after I opened, the West Carelton Art Society asked me if they could hang some work of local artists in my space, which are switched out monthly, giving the space the feel of a nice art gallery.I have loads to offer, from my own jewellery, to garden art, kinetic wind sculptures, local artisans featuring everything from bath and body products, to local raw and infused honey, to alpaca products from Oxford Mills, and many more artists.

In your opinion, what makes Carp unique?Carp is such an interesting place. It has so much history. My shop is one of the oldest buildings in Carp. It is on the map drawn in the early 1800’s. At that time it was a harness shop, and has gone through many different business types over the

years. I find that people who are from Carp are very interested and knowledgeable about the history of the village.

There is such a mixture of old and new here. The train still runs through the village every week, but we have our own airport. We protect and care for the old,( like the fairgrounds, the beautiful old light standards, and the flowers decorating them), while embracing the new, (with new businesses springing up everywhere, new subdivisions, new community parks and gardens).

Carp has commercial, recreational, institutional and residential mixed use development right in the village core, all within walking distance.

Upcoming eventsThis is a busy time of the year. End of school means people are shopping for teachers, coaches, bus drivers etc. They are looking for items for the garden and the cottage. Fathers day is coming up, and we have wedding and baby shower gifts covered.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT The Hive

The Hive is a hub in the community of Carp, offering a unique one-stop shop for florals, gifts, clothing and décor from talented local artisans and entrepreneurs. The place has been buzzing with activity this spring. We stopped by to meet the new owner, and get a sneak peek at the new businesses, and a new look in-store!

What can people expect at The Hive? The Hive is committed to fostering local entrepreneurs and artisans, in addition to our main shop where we offer a variety of carefully curated products. We are pleased to be sharing our space with: · "MacLean & Associates Inc." offering vintage and mid-century modern furniture and smalls, consignment and new gift items. ·"Bee You Creative Styles & Expressions," featuring unique consignment clothing styles for ladies, gents and kids. A place to bring community together, to remind us that buying used is about saving the world and shopping local is about saving the community. · "Autumns Fine Flowers," providing floral arrangements for all occasions. Everything from weddings, funerals, graduations, anniversaries and many other special moments.

· Also, later this summer we are pleased to welcome "Style by Marilyn", offering a boutique style salon specializing in creative design and color, customized to suit you and your lifestyle. Marilyn will be a new Carp resident and brings 20 years of experience in the beauty industry as a hairstylist, successful salon owner, international educator, and certified image consultant. What makes your collection of businesses unique? We are a unique and eclectic mix of entrepreneurs, fostering mentorship, support and promoting growth within our community. Each shop is independently owned but collectively our shops offer so much that we are a one-stop shop for the community.

What are some interesting products you now carry? We are very excited about HINZA bags right now. They are imported directly from Sweden, and are made from either recycled plastic, or sugar cane. We are the 2nd company in Canada to carry these unique bags. Originally designed in 1950 this bag has been reintroduced as totally organic, and totally practical; they come in a wide range of colours and uses. Great for groceries or the Carp Farmers Market! Truly a product you can feel good about.

It’s wedding season! Award winning florist Lindsay McFadden is geared up for one of her best seasons yet! Call or come in for a consultation.

Final word We are excited for the growth of Carp but we value the small town feel and we hope to promote our village and support our community. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Alice's Village Cafe

Alice’s Village Cafe is an integral part of the Carp community. It’s a warm and welcome setting that plays host to family gatherings and celebrations, acts as an informal meeting room for local businesses, and motivates cyclists from far and wide as a refreshing finish line for expeditions. We spoke with owners Melanie Ruest and Todd Hirtle to learn the secret ingredients that drive its success.

What makes Alice’s the ideal ‘community hub’ within the village? This is a great question that cannot be answered without acknowledging the original owners (Dustin and Crystal Therrien) who had a vision that resulted in Alice’s! We strive to continue to build upon that vision by being that warm, welcoming community hub within Carp that has a little bit of something for everyone. Beyond the fine treats and food produced from scratch within the café, all the staff attempt to provide that friendly service that Alice’s has become known for.

Many people host meetings at Alice’s, work alone from a lap top or just meet a friend for coffee. If you ever need an answer to any question regarding current affairs you can join the table of knowledge where the “Village Elders” or “Alice’s Senate” convene daily to solve all of the world’s problems.

In your opinion, what makes operating a business within the village unique?Carp is an amazing village filled with great people who all want to work together to make Carp better! Carp continues to grow and will soon have a new retirement home that will bring more people to the village.

T H E C A R P V I L L A G E R | N E W S L E T T E R | 8 T H E C A R P V I L L A G E R | N E W S L E T T E R | 9

Our intent is to support local as much as possible, reciprocally the community is respective and appreciative of what each other brings to the table, that makes Carp such a wonderful village!

As the community and Alice’s grows, the demand for more staff (cooks, etc) continues to also grow…. So, what we are lacking in Carp is access to public transport. Alice’s (and the other businesses) would really benefit from a transport solution for employees outside of Carp.

Why Carp?Melanie and I decided to settle in Carp as a final destination after moving and living all across Canada as a military family. Carp is such a quiet little family town with access to phenomenal opportunities for our family. As I retire from the Forces, Alice’s is part of our transition plan from a 25+ year military career and is truly a family operated business. Melanie carries the bulk of the work load now and my daughter has commenced working there part time.

I help in the background, or as the girls would say “talk too much” as we interact with all of our great supporters from the village and from away! Alice’s and Carp is a tremendous place to meet new people!

What can people expect during the summer months in terms of events? Open Mic every Thursday night is a mainstay! This is Alice’s pub-like atmosphere night where musicians of all ages congregate to have some fun, craft beer and provide incredible entertainment to the community and patrons of Alice’s. This summer Alice’s will continue to be booming as is the village with everything it has to offer. Carp will continue to have significant visitors to the numerous great venues, such as the Farmer’s Market, Carp Fair and all of the other new great businesses that are already here or are coming! Expect the cyclists to continue to swarm the community as Alice’s is their hub for those long-distance athletes who stop for a coffee, treat, lunch or Radler! Graham Mastersmith will continue as the curator and manage all of the art work displayed within the café. There may even be the odd special event as the summer progresses.
