Scouting’s Journey to Excellence is the Boy Scouts new

council performance recognition program designed to

encourage and reward success and measure the perfor-

mance of our units, districts, and councils. It is replac-

ing the Centennial Quality Awards Program as a means

of encouraging excellence in providing a quality pro-

gram at all levels of the Boy Scouts.

For more information, please visit:

http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Awards/JourneyToExcellence.aspx to learn about the requirements

for your pack, troop, or crew.

You can now enter your service hours at scouting.org/awards/journeytoexcellence.

Scroll down the page to see the link on the right hand side. Users of

www.goodturnforamerica will be re-directed to the Journey to Excellence page. You

are encouraged to use the Journey to Excellence Service Hours.

An integral part of the Santa Clara County Council's future is our endowment program. Gifts to the endowment are invested with only the interest income used annually. This creates a perpetual income stream helping to ensure the future financial stability of our council. The James E. West Fellowship Award, named after the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, is a national recognition for those who contribute $1000 or more in cash or securities to our council's endowment fund. Currently, we have 286 James E. West Fellows in our council. It is important to note that a qualifying gift for recognition as a James E. West Fellow is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace, the donor's annu-al gift to Friends of Scouting.

Individuals or organizations may contribute an award in honor of someone, an Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, or significant Scout leader, or in memory of a departed loved one, business associate, or a special Scouter. Each donor will be recognized with a personalized 8 x 10 certificate, distinctive lapel pin, a uniform square knot and an invitation to a special recognition event held annually. Application forms are available at the council service center or by contacting Jake Carlson at [email protected].

The summer is fast approaching and with it comes our annual Cub Scout Day Camps and Resident Camp

programs. Cub Scout Day and Resident Camps can be the best part of a boys Scouting year and we don’t

want any of our Cubs to miss out.

The kick-off registration event “The Adventure Begins” will be held on Saturday, April 9th, starting at

8:00am at the Scout Service Center on Julian St. This is the best opportunity to get your Cub Scouts

registered for Day and Resident camps at the lowest possible price. Unit representatives are encouraged to

gather the necessary forms, materials and payments and get to the Service Center early, as we expect our

most popular camps to fill quickly.

Unit representatives should bring a registration form for each Cub Scout (for each camp they wish to

attend), medical forms (for Day and Twilight camps) and payment in full to receive the special price

available only on this date.

The following Monday, April 11th, regular registration prices go into

effect, so be sure to “Be Prepared” to get your scouts registered at this

event.

Information and links to all necessary forms can be found at the Cub

Scout Camping website at www.scccbsa.org/cubcamp/ .

Lets make 2011 the year where “NO CUB IS LEFT INDOORS”.

Blue & Gold Placemats Printed placemats for use at your Blue & Gold Banquet

are still available at the Scout Service Center. These

placemats have information regarding our Cub Scout Day

& Resident Camp programs, themed puzzles and games

on the back and a response section that the Cub Scout’s

and their parents can use to indicate the camps they are

most interested in attending. The Pack leaders can then

use this information to help plan their summer programs.

If the unit leaders agree to utilize the placemat response

section, we will also provide a great item (while supplies

last) to be used as a raffle prize. Instructions for the

raffle program are provided along with the prize. Please

come to the front desk at the Scout Service Center to

request your FREE PLACEMATS and raffle prize!

Cub Scout Water Rocket Derby

Please join us on Saturday, April 9 from 12:30 to 5:00 PM

at Rainbow Park. Our 11th annual Water Rocket Derby is

open to all registered Cub Scouts. Come and enjoy the fun

and excitement of building and launching soda bottle

rockets. We will supply the rocket kits and materials on

the day of the event. The boys will build the rockets, and

then launch them with water and compressed air.

The cost is $5 per Scout which includes a rocket kit and

patch. All registrations must be complete by April 15.

Please register early as space is limited.

For more information or to register, see the council

calendar for April 9 at www.scccbsa.org

Learn the proper Leave No Trace methods for taking Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing units camping.

As more people use parks and recreation facilities, Leave No Trace guildelines become even more im-

portant for outdoor visitors. Leave No Trace is a plan that helps people to be more concerned about their

environment and to help them protect it for future generations. Leave No Trace applies in a backyard of

local park (front country) as much as it does in the wilderness (backcountry).

This course will be a fun and engaging way to learn the 7 LNT principles and offer opportunities for you

to take these exciting methods back to your unit and begin teaching LNT right away.

You will learn about:

• How to implement LNT in your unit’s outdoor program

• How to properly present LNY skills to your unit and others

• The BSA’s LNT awards & how members of your unit can earn them

There is a fee of $28.00 which will cover a cracker

barrel and some course materials. The course is

open to any Scout (14 or older), Venturer, or adult

The Boy Scouts of America National Health and Safety Committee, composed of Scouters with expertise in a

variety of risk management and medical fields, issued a new medical form for use in all occasions.

The new form covers all Scouting programs. Use this form for any activity where a medical release, physical

examination, health history, etc. is required for participation in a Scouting event.

• Part A—Health history

• Part B—Informed consent release

• Part C—Examination by licensed medical practioner

• Part D—Guidelines and releases for high adventure and specialized activity participation

The tour plan is a checklist for best practices to be prepared for safe and fun adventure. Completing the tour plan may not

address all possible challenges, but can help ensure that appropriate planning has been conducted, that qualified and trained

leadership is in place, and that the right equipment is available for the adventure.

The tour plan should be complete and submit at least 21 days in advance. When the plan is approved, the second half of the

plan is returned to you to carry on your

travels.

Dr. Lam Do, M.D., recent author of the Children’s Career Book: “So, You Want to Be a Doctor When You Grow Up?”, will be hosting the district’s newest Medical exploring post. Twenty students will be given the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Do and learn what it takes to be a medical doctor. If you are interested in medicine and are ready to work hard, you should seriously consider this unique opportunity.

Each month Dr. Do and his explorers will learn about some aspect of medicine. The team will then be tasked to script, produce and star in short video vignettes that will be posted on YouTube and other video sites. “Our goal is to show future doctors what it takes to be a good physician while providing a valuable public service.”, says Dr. Lam Do. Each student is required to participate in the creation of short video’s that are targeted to be of special interesting to various communities of viewers. This could include subjects for teens, areas specific to boy or girls or areas of general medicine such as: what to expect during a normal physical exam.

If you think you have what it takes and would like to explore the possibilities with a real practicing doctor, send an email to [email protected] . In the email tell us why you want to be a doctor. We are only accepting 20 students at this time so apply early. Because of the anticipated demand for this type of training, there may be additional questions before you are accepted into the program. Must be age 14 – 20 years old to participate.

Tour plans replace tour permits, effective March 1, 2011

Hello Santa Clara County Council! I am Bob Wedig and I am thrilled to be your new Council

Commissioner. I know that I have large shoes to fill from my predecessor but I will do the best I

can. I want to thank Dick Noack for the last three years of service he has given to the council and I

wish him well in his new position as the Council president. Wait a minute; that still makes him my

boss…..

But seriously, I look forward to working with Dick and Jason as part of the council key 3.

Previously, I have been a district commissioner for the Polaris District for the last three years. I

worked with Dick during this time and I have been shadowing him for the last few months to get a

feel for this job. I look forward to working with the commissioners in all the districts and I look

forward to helping maintain our council as one of the highest quality councils in the Western Region.

If you would are interested in being as commissioner and joining us in this cause, please let me know. We can always use

more good commissioners.

Your New Council Commissioner,

Bob Wedig

Dear Fellow Scouters,

Twelve weeks ago, I became the President of the Board of Directors of our great council. It is a great honor and I appreciate the opportunity to serve Scouting in this way. I've been involved in Scouting in various capacities for the past 45 years, including being an Eagle Scout, a Unit Leader, a new leader trainer, a Roundtable Commissioner, and the father of an Eagle Scout. I even worked for the Boy Scouts for three years right out of college, serving as a District Executive in a rural council in northwestern Wisconsin. In serving on the Board of Directors, I have learned a great deal about the "big picture" of the Scouting program and how we change not only the lives of our youth members but also the futures of our communities and nation. If we as a Board do our jobs the right way, you may not hear much about us. What we on the Board do is to assure that our council has the financial means to pursue our mission, to provide programs to support the packs, troops, teams, crews, and posts in our council, to expand opportunities for young people in our communities to benefit from the Scouting program, and to enable all of the units in the council to be successful in providing quality Scouting programs for all of our youth members. Our council recently embarked on a five-year jour-ney guided by our new strategic plan to strengthen and increase our council's operations, position as a resource in the community, and vision and dedication to service. Right now is an exciting time for the Scouting program as it enters its second century strong-er and more relevant than ever before. I share your passion for and commitment to our great program and council and I wanted to thank you for all you do to make a difference in the lives of our youth.

Good Scouting to you,

Dick Noack, Council President

On Saturday, February 12th the Coyote Creek District Vietnamese Scouting units gathered for a first ever Flag Ceremony at Lake Cunningham Park to honor in the Lunar New Year. The event was attended by over 500 Scouts and Scouters from the

various Lien Doans and included various guest speakers from the local Santa Clara County Council, The Girl Scouts of Northern California and Mayor Jose Esteves from the City of Milpitas. Thank you to Tuan Le, Don Pham and the Vietnamese Committee on Scouting for organizing such a great event.

Is your unit on a Journey to Excellence for providing a quality program for youth?

You probably are and deserve to be recognized. New for 2011 is the National Journey to Excellence program for units, districts and councils. This is a program that provides recognition and guidance toward maintaining and improving the quality of program delivery in Scouting.

The Coyote Creek Commissioner staff is encouraging every unit to participate in this program.

Check it out now and discuss with your unit committee to see what you can achieve this year:

F riends of Scouting Pioneer District is starting the year off strong in our Friends of Scouting campaign! Currently, we have raised $92,229, a little more than $10,000 ahead of last year! Thank you to all the

units that have completed their Friends of Scouting presentations! If your unit has not completed a

presentation or needs help, please contact your District Executive, Michael Wilson at 408.280.5088. Our

2011 goal as a district is to raise $171,000 and we will need everyone’s help to try and reach this!

Pioneer District is calling all Units to join us for a weekend of service projects at Redwood Glen Salvation Army Camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains just outside of Scotts Valley. Material for the projects will be provided by the camp where it is needed. The Redwood Glen Camp is in great need of assistances, and they have turned to the Boy Scouts of America for help. This camps critical to both Santa Clara County, and Santa Cruz County because of the work with At Risk, Inter-city, and homeless kids from both counties and the greater Bay Area. This weekend will qualify your unit toward service hours for Good Turn for America by working for the Salvation Army and they can earn a portion of their Year of Celebration Service Ribbon The Weekend will start with registration beginning at 4:30 up 9:00PM on Friday evening. Dinner is included Friday Night, and concludes on Sunday afternoon with Camp dismissal at 2:00PM. Boy Scout Troops & Crews can make this a Campout by pitching tents, and Packs can spend the night as Pack event. Please contact Dennis Conte - for more information and how your unit can take part in exciting weekend of service to others. Dennis Conte - 408-267-0505 or 408-425-6486, [email protected]

Every year Scouts from the Polaris District gather together at camporee to compete, meet other Polaris District Scouts, and,

most importantly, show their scout spirit. This year, camporee is the weekend of April 9-10. This year’s theme is “Wild

West”.

Details will be available at the district Roundtable. Don’t forget to pre-register for a lower fee and bonus points at camporee!

Be aware that vehicle access to the camp continues to be very limited due to the lack of parking. Like previous years, Scouts

can expect to hike down to the camp from the drop-off point.

Whether you are married, single, widowed, or divorced, you need a will. In many cases, it has nothing to do with how large or small your estate may be. Without a will, your estate will not be distributed to those family members and organizations that you care about. The State will decide who gets your assets, and probably keep a sizable chunk of it for itself. Without a will, the State can also decide who takes care of your young children when you are gone.

Without a will, your family and friends will suffer, but so will your church, your schools, and Scouting. Your bequest gift can make a real difference in the financial future of our council and the other organizations that are important to you and your family. Call us and ask for more information on the importance of a will and what it can mean to you.

You spent a lifetime building your estate. Now it's time to take a few minutes to protect that estate.
