CleanersDay June 15 marks International Cleaners Day and this year I want to particularly commend the work of the cleaning staff of our school. Cleaners are often unheralded and just get on with their important work without fuss. Sadly, their work is routinely unrecognised for its importance, time and again our cleaners are unknown to most in our community. The ongoing Covid 19 health emergency has brought into sharp focus the importance of the work they do in allowing the students and staff to learn and work in a safe, hygienic environment. So that they do not remain unknown, here are their names: Steven Cartwright Maree Frampton Dana Pesic Margaret Ramsay Tracey Smith Karen Ham We will publicly say our thanks on Monday at school. Grant Success The school has been successful in its bid for a grant to upgrade the oval. $30,000 has been awarded to the project. The grant is part of over $5 million awarded by the Brisbane City Council through competitive grant programs to community groups to help build on our citys lifestyle. Over $221,000 was allocated to upgrade existing Brisbane school sport and recreation facilities to increase their use by both school students and the local community. Enquiries from community groups who wish to hire our facilities in out of school hours are always welcome. In particular, I want to thank Matt Walker who put in many hours of work to get our successful submission to Brisbane City Council. S Block The present upgrade of S Block, still more widely called the old dental clinic”, is almost finished. I expect handover of the facility at the beginning of third term. The required furniture fit out is presently being tendered. The upgrade only applies to the top floor at present but will provide us with a facility ideally suited to the teaching of STEM and some aspects of the arts. The bottom floor of the building does not require the major modifications required for upstairs and will be soon put into use as meeting and storage rooms. Mathematics-Daily Maths Routines- Rapid Recalls As you know a key a key initiative at our school is Daily Maths Routines (DMR). One type of daily maths routine is a ‘Rapid Recall’. I have spoken of this strategy regularly. Every class participates in rapid recalls every per week. A second type of DMR is a ‘Number Talk’. Rapid Recalls A rapid recall focus stems from class or school student data. The data would indicate aspects of taught curriculum that require consolidation and/or mastery. The rapid recalls can be based on one topic for an extensive period until data demonstrates improvement or a particular level has been achieved. A rapid recall starts with student recall and recitation often repeating vocabulary, definitions, concepts or processes led by the teacher. The recall would progress to real world or mathematical situations or applications. The third stage requires students to address problem solving and reasoning scenarios. A rapid recall takes 8-10 minutes to deliver and it can be used at any time of the school day-not just during maths lessons. Rapid recalls are a highly effective strategy

to motivate and consolidate learning. Please ask your child about them!! Number Talks Number Talks are short (5-15 minutes),

daily exercises aimed at building ‘Number Sense’. Number Sense is the ability to play with numbers, meaning students can visualize problem solving, perform calculations quickly, and are flexible in their mathematical strategy. Number Talks ‘fit’ with our Rapid Recalls to become a major component of

our Daily Routines. Parents can try these number talks at home. Some examples are: 34 x 2, 34 x 20, 68 x 20 150 + 230,155 + 235, 155+435 30% of 60, 60% of 60, 90% of 60 What do Number Talks Look Like? FEATURES:

A mathematics expression, question or problem is visible on the board and is read publicly to students.

Wait time is given for students to devise a solution

Students use non-verbal signals or feedback to the teacher when they have a solution

Students share possible solutions-including errors

Turn and talk (student discourse) explain their solution to a partner quietly first (optional)

The teacher scribes and represents the possible solutions on the board/display area

The teacher builds engagement through questions drawing connections between possible solutions and methods.

Message from our Community Liaison Officer 2021 Prep Catchment and

Sibling Enrolments

We are accepting catchment and sibling enrolments for prep 2021. If you have younger children commencing prep next year, please complete and return the enrolment application forms as soon as possible. These are available on our school website. If this is your first child commencing prep, please make sure you include two documents for proof of residency, along with the original birth certificate. For sibling enrolments you just need to bring the original birth certificate. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Class Parent Representatives The Class Parent Representatives program will commence in 3rd Term. I have organised the relevant documents and they will be coming home via the classrooms (who do have a Rep) in the next day or so. At this point in time we have Class Reps for the following classes – PSS (formerly PDS), PMJ, PSC, PYC, 1MG, 1SB, 1SE, 1SW, 2HE, 2JC, 2TS, 4ED, 4SC. If you would like to volunteer for this role for your class, please do not hesitate to email me. Karen Oliver Email: [email protected]

Library Matters

During the first few weeks of this term, we were able to undertake a number of ‘housekeeping’ tasks in the library. The photo above shows the outcome of one such task. The reorganisation of our middle fiction collection has had the benefit of creating more floor space in the junior reading area. We have been receiving positive feedback from all our users – staff and students.

As a bonus for registration into this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime, the library became eligible to win a gift pack donated by one of the event’s sponsors.

We were lucky enough to be one of these winners and received our box of goodies in the mail last week.
