Workshops

Sat. Oct. 21 Curved Piecing without Pins Workshop with Jan Glew

Do you avoid patterns that have curved blocks like the drunkard's path? Attend this workshop and simplify your curved piecing. You can learn to sew curves easily, without pins or special stuff.

Sewing curves can be fun. There are so many patterns that use this block. What you make with this technique is up to you. Sample table runners and placemats will be shown.

We will be at the Moose Family Centre, 543 Trunk Road in the small meeting room.

Workshop will be 10-4 pm and we will have access to the room 9:30 - 4:30.

Bring your lunch, coffee, pop and water are available to purchase.

November Workshop - Ricky Tims Techniques in Action

Did you fall in love with the Convergence Quilts. Maybe the Rhapsody Quilt is more your style. Are you impressed by the intricate results of the Kool Kaleidoscope Quilt? Are you anxious about trying one of his techniques?

Bring your patterns, books or syllabus and come work with other like minded guild members. Help each other follow the patterns and lessons that you have. (The guild library has books too.)

Date and details will be available at the guild meeting.

Learn, participate, enjoy and socialize. What a great way to spend a day!

Bee Groups, Comfort Quilts, Workshops

Applique Club Wednesday, September 6, 2017 was our first meeting. We had a large turn out. Everyone's projects are coming along beautifully. We meet again October 4th. upstairs at Rome’s from 10:00 to 3:00. Bring your projects and some show and share. We have the cutest wool applique piece for everyone to try. Donations of wool felt have been provided. You just bring some embroidery floss from your stash. We are continuing with the Barter Basket this year. Janet Johnson was the lucky winner this month. We will be instructed on embellishing in the coming months. Ruler Education is always fun and we will continue with this instruction. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Comfort Quilts Comfort Quilts is a very active group of ladies within our guild. This important charity work is allotted a budget to purchase supplies. We are always open to donations of clean, odour free cotton fabric to add to the quilts. So the next time you are looking to re home fabric from your stash please think of us.

Rome’s donates a large working space the second Wednesday of each month so we can meet as a group to work/play on these quilts. These quilts are given as a "hug" to recipients meeting the criteria, from our quilting community. If you would like to join us, our next sew day is Wednesday, October 11, at 10am, Upstairs at Romes.

At our September sew day we had 28 ladies join in for a fun filled day. We even celebrated a special milestone birthday!

19 completed quilted quilts were also handed in that day. Not sure but I'm thinking that must be a record ! These ladies were busy over the summer. Your dedication is appreciated!

The St. Joseph Island Quilt Show & Sale had over 400 visitors come thru the door over the 3 days from 10 - 4 PM

on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 4, 5 & 6. From large to small each of the 105 quilts displayed were unique, creative and notable.

Faye Anderson won the Viewer’s Choice with her “Framed Flowers” quilt. Faye is a long time quilter and even had quilts in our first show 29 years ago. She also won a quilt show challenge a few years back. Second place was “Nestled at the Lodge” owned by Judith Beduhn and machine quilted by Shawna Deplonty of Aba Daba Quilts & Long Arm Quilting. This quilt was a special gift for her husband. Third place was“ Nogard a.k.a. Noggy” by Nancy Sachro.

Carey Sauve of the Sault won the Whitetail Woods Copper Spoon Gift Pack. The other gift certificates from our generous island businesses follows: Moose Sweats gift certificate won by Linda Smith of Thessalon; Island Market gift certificate won by Bob Allen of Richards Landing and Camille’s Island Cafe gift certificate won by Faye Anderson.

We had several demonstrators over the three days. Riley Broks a 15 year old young entrepreneur who crochets her own creations. Deborah Missere did hand turned appliqué. Anna Hamilton worked on Battenberg Lace techniques. Norah McGuire demonstrated quick and easy quilting blocks from scraps. Carol Sawchyn worked on hand quilting in addition to being a valuable resource answering visitors questions on basic quilting techniques. Janet Johnson demonstrated hand quilting and helped throughout the show, especially in hanging quilts to show them off at their best possible location and colour coordination. Thanks to all these amazing women.

Our Vendors were Life’s A Stitch from Sault Ste. Marie, Creative Basket from Thessalon, Sew Little Time from Cambridge and Black Tulip Designs from Southern Ontario. All benefited from the captive audience our visitors were made up of…which of course were Quilters! Special thanks to Life’s A Stitch for allowing quilts to be dropped off and picked up at their store in the Sault.

Thanks to all the quilters who entered quilts and visited the show. Monies made at the show are divided among the St. Joseph Island Community Quilters, Clover Valley Women’s Institute and the Richards Landing Women’s Institute. Eventually all the money is returned to local organizations through monetary donations and comfort quilts. Next year will be our 30th Anniversary and with everyone’s support we will have the Quilt Show on the August Long Weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 3, 4, & 5, 2018.

Shared by Mary Anne Gasparetto: Good morning Quilters; Below is a letter sent to Leslie Whitby, president of CQA/ACC thanking all of us for the quilts we made for Ronald McDonald Homes (2614 quilts by the end of Quilt Canada). Please pass it on to all your quilting friends . If you are like my guild, please send a photo of any of your special quilting events so that I can send them in for our CQA/ACC regional news. Thanks, Lauren MacDonald, Northern Ontario Regional Representative, CQA/ACC:

“Hi Leslie, It’s said that “those who sleep under a quilt, sleep under a blanket of love.” These words ring especially true, when I think of the 2,614 families who will receive one of the beautiful quilts, stitched with passion, love and care, by the generous Quilters’ of the CQA. Thank you! For our families, your incredible gifts represent more than just a quilt. After a long day at the hospital, parents will unwind and curl un-der their warmth, families will snuggle under for story time, and children will be wrapped tight as they leave the Ronald McDonald Houses for home. Your contributions will bring welcome warmth, both physical and emotional, to families of sick children across Canada. And without your vision, hard work and efforts, none of this would be possible – thank you!

Carol shared with us all the wonderful events that took place this past week at the Canadian Quilters Convention, and all the heartfelt feedback she received from everyone she spoke with. I’m sorry I could not have been there in-person, but was certainly there in spir-it! Riddhi has also displayed the quilt you shared with her in our offices, and we are honoured to display it here as a reminder of the tremendous support RMHC and our families are fortunate to be the recipients of. Thank you for raising awareness and championing our mission with your network, volunteers and Quilters this past year. Our hearts are truly full and overwhelmed with appreciation. I know every RMHC House will receive your quilts with love and gratitude. With our heartfelt thanks, Cathy”

PLACEMATS

The gifting of placemats for the clients of the Meals on Wheels program will be an ongoing project this year. Lea, the program director, has been giving each new client a placemat. She tells me they are very surprised and grateful to receive one. Mostly all of the clients use them everyday. These projects are a great way to use a small amount of your stash and work up very quickly. Orphan blocks make great placemats. A good size for a placemat is 12" X 18". l will accept your placemats at any monthly meeting and will deliver them when I make quilt deliveries. Thanking you in advance for your participation,

Susie Kainula You will find links to some free placemat patterns here, here, here, and here. Placemat video here.

A quilter’s jigsaw puzzle for you here. Another here.

Joanne Gray’s Miniature Quilt goes to Paducah!

On March 8, 2017 I was able to cross one thing off my bucket list. Andrea Ray, the Con-test Coordinator for the Spring Paducah show, sent me a congratulatory e:mail and a press release announcing “Local Quilter Semifinalist in International Quilt Show”. I was at work when I got the e:mail and my male co-workers weren’t sure what to think about the scene I was making doing the “happy dance” in my cubicle!!

The quilt, PYTHAGORAS' PETITE PENTAGONS, was selected along with 403 others in the annual contest in Paducah, KY, now in its 33rd year. Quilts were entered from 44 US

states and 14 other countries.

I saw the Pythagoras' Lute Quilt Pattern published in the "Quilts with style" magazine I purchased in October 2006. I started working on it shortly after that and only finished it in 2017 so it took a long time to make.

I'm an engineer so first I redrafted the pattern so that I could make freezer paper templates and use traditional piecing techniques instead of using paper piecing. Since up to 10 fabrics come together at a point, I wanted to control what direction I would press the seams. It took me several attempts to draft it because even being off by one degree on one wedge would cause the lines not to match up when I got to the end.

I knew I wanted taupe to be one of the colors but it took a full two hours in a quilt shop in Nebraska to pick out the fabrics. I thought the bubblegum pink was a great complement to the neutral taupe. Then I made color photo-copies of the fabric and cut out all the little pieces to make sure the pattern would pop. I had learned from several failed miniature quilts that color value is even more important with miniatures than with big quilts.

There are 10 wedges and each time I made one, I learned something that made the next one a little bit better. I put the project away several times when it got too hard. I came back to it when I would come up with another idea to try. It’s through this process that I came up with the idea of grading seams.

The comments from the judges were very complimentary and helpful. They said: “Good Draftmanship, good color transitions, binding well done”. They also said: “intersections bulky”.

The comment about the bulky intersections was very con-structive. I knew that the judges would look so see if the points matched but I did not know they looked at the bulk-iness of the seams. That was very helpful, especially since now I know how to reduce that by grading the seams. And it was a fair comment since at least half of the wedges were completed before I started using that technique.

The judges did not make any comments about the quilting but I know from looking at the winning quilts that it was too sparse to be a contender. So I guess that’s the next thing I’ll be working on!!

I’m so thrilled that my quilt was in the show. It was a truly gratifying experience and an honor. Attending the quilt show at Paducah is still on my bucket list so maybe I’ll work on getting ME there next!!
