Dear Parents
Our Music Assembly on Tuesday morning was a happy and fun one that
began with the marimba band and string ensemble accompanying our
hymn, Siyahamba.
The string ensemble also helped Ms Conrads with her message to the
school and practically demonstrated the three c’s that are so important
in any teamwork:
• Communication
• Cooperation
• Courage
Ms Karsten even had her musical debut as she was tasked with
conducting our string ensemble!
We ended off the assembly with the Grade 2 violin girls playing a lovely
pizzicato piece. Well done girls.

Foundation Phase
In keeping with our theme of Changes Over Time, the Grade 2s had the
opportunity to make e-books using Book Creator on the iPads. They
thoroughly enjoyed a stimulating lesson in a relaxed environment under
Herschel’s beautiful plane trees.

The Grade R girls had lots of fun on their outing to the tidal pools at Camps
Bay beach. They collected shells, built sand castles, and interacted with
one another. They also picked up broken glass, making sure the beach
environment was clean and safe.
Intermediate Phase
Grade 5
The Grade 5s have spent most of the term studying the geography of
Africa in their Integrated Studies lessons. They researched interesting
facts about African countries and then applied this knowledge with
creativity and imagination to create board games about Africa. On
Tuesday the girls had great fun playing and assessing each other’s board
games.

Grade 6 Camp to Wortelgat The Grade 6s went on their annual camp to Wortelgat on Wednesday 28
February. After unpacking and meeting the leaders, the girls were
divided into six groups for the duration of the camp. The first activities
included a ski race, Minesweeper and the marble run. Then it was down
to the water for the Queen and Princess of the Mud competition,
followed by a bucket water relay. After a tasty supper and some free
time the girls, learnt some new indoor games: Penguin, Gee-ga-low and
Banana. The girls were divided into two groups – one group did the Owl
trail night hike, while the other group played Stalk the Lantern.
The following morning the girls were up early and got into their groups
for a day of team building activities. Many girls faced difficult challenges
such as the spider web, Chinese tyres, balance beam, bush art, climb the
chimney and kayaking. The girls enjoyed working together as a team and
encouraging their team mates to complete each task. After a delicious
braai of chicken, wors, rolls and potato salad the girls prepared for the
night activities. Finally it was time for Bingo – the girls had made their
own cards and with caller, Mrs Lewis, in full cry the competition for
Easter egg prizes began! Next morning the girls were up, packing and
cleaning their bungalows. After breakfast, farewells were said and a very
tired group of Grade 6s left camp. Some of the girls’ comments:
Anna Searson : ‘I loved the challenging rounds of Stalk the Lantern”
Jasmine Hatherill:” I had a great time at camp, my highlights were
kayaking and chimney rock climbing.”
Roxanne Boyd: “I had so much fun with my friends.”

Grade 6 Dads & Daughters Technology Evening
On Thursday 8 March the Grade 6 girls gathered in the Prep School Hall with their dads at 18:30 where their brief was read
to them. The teams had to design and make a camouflaged structure to protect them from a jungle storm, but at the same
time provide them with a viewing opportunity. They had to build a simple series circuit to provide torch light and make a
flag. The flag needed to be placed above the structure for ‘search and find’ purposes. Five green garden bags, four sticks
and string were supplied as the main building materials; felt tipped pens were used for decoration.
The girls had such fun spending time with their fathers. The dads were fabulous sports and entered into the spirit of things
with whole-hearted enthusiasm.
A huge thank you to Mervin Walsh from Bishops and Kathy Burden from the Senior School for being the judges on the
evening. No easy task to assess 23 projects in a limited period of time! They did have a hard task on their hands as some
truly brilliant structures and creative flags were produced. The team of Andrew and Georgia Finlayson, Rob and Kate
Formby and Amy van Breda were declared the winners on the night.
A huge thank you to all staff who made the evening possible.

Tips for Reading
Elizabeth Nadler-Nir is delighted to invite parents, guardians, grandparents, teachers or anyone who is interested in
reading improvement, to a course on reading.
Monday, 19 March at 6:30pm
This 1 ½ hour course will equip people with an understanding of how reading develops and the different challenges faced by
many readers. Practical tips will guide parents to make the best of the reading relationship, whether it is with their
reluctant 11 year old or their emergent reader.

Eco Club The Eco Club explored Fernwood Park in Newlands last Friday. The park
is a beautiful oasis in the centre of the suburbs, supported and
maintained by the local residents. We looked at some of the adaptations
plants have made to be able to grow and survive in nature. The girls also
learnt about animal adaptations including topics such as: camouflage,
bio-mimicry, behaviour and eating patterns. We played a fun game and
searched in the cool and shady riverbed for interesting things to
discover.

Grade 7 Fair
The annual Grade 7 Fair will take place on Tuesday, 24 April 2018 and the proceeds will go to Grade 7 Community Outreach
Projects as well as the annual Grade 7 gift to the school.
The Fair is an important aspect of the year as we try to develop social awareness in the girls. The Grade 7 girls are working
very hard at school and at home making interesting items for sale to make this a fun-filled and exciting day for the rest of
the school. A range of very worthy causes benefit from their hard work and dedication through the year.
Before then, please use this opportunity to have a clear out and send donations to Mrs Billett’s office for:
Whole school appeal:
TOMBOLA: any items suitable for prizes;
WHITE ELEPHANT: any items suitable for sale at school;
SECOND HAND: books, clothes, DVDs, CDs etc.
PLANTS: seedlings, shrubs, bunches of flowers & herbs
Grade specific appeals are as follows:
Grades 1 and 2 – cakes, cookies, cupcakes;
Grades 3 and 4 – sweets for prizes and sale;
Grades 5 and 6 – small prizes.
Please send your donations (non-edibles and plants) to school any time from now until the 23 April.
Plants should be brought to school two days before the Fair and home bakes on the morning of the Fair.
Thank you very much for your support of this important event on the Herschel calendar.

Our Grade 6 UK Exchange pupils, accompanied by Mrs Lewis, Mrs Roebert and Ms Conrads depart for St John’s-on-the-Hill on
Tuesday, 13 March. We would like to wish them everything of the best as they embark on this exciting adventure. We look
forward to hearing all about their travels when they return on 29 March.
Good luck to the courageous moms, dads and girls who are going to be riding the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday. I hope
that the wind is behind you and that your legs are strong. Have a wonderful ride, enjoy the support and the camaraderie of
those on the road.
“If you have a purpose in which you can believe, there’s no end to the amount of things you can accomplish.” Marian Anderson
Wishing you all a fantastic weekend with your loved ones.
Yours sincerely
