terror threat in the country. It gives me
enormous gratification and honour to welcome
you all. We have put all necessary plans in place
to avert any security threat. We know this year’s

said of the Olympics, “will be the greatest ever!”

Kisii as one the “Big Ten” Universities in
Kenya
People are taking notice because Kisii
University has arrived and taken its place as one
of the big ten universities in Kenya in terms of
size, student population and programmes. The
University has earned this great reputation
through success in many of its programmes Kisii
University is the fastest growing university in
Kenya and much of the growth has come about
as a result of great commitment from students
and staff members. We are proud to have the
highest number of programmes at undergraduate
and postgraduate level in Kenya.

Collaborations
Kisii University holds much collaboration with
leading universities and organizations and is
determined to play its role in the community of
universities across the world. Our scholars have
been recognised by many universities. Many of
them are serving in various capacities as editors
of leading journals, external examiners, peer
reviewers and other roles that have the
university a great name.
Keynote speakers
This year, we have invited keynote speakers
from a wide array of fields. We feel very
privileged and honoured to have such high
profile scholars in our midst. Shadrack
Nasong’o, Prof. Ruth Otunga, Prof. Peter Tirop
Simatei and Prof. Prof. Kefa Otiso will all be
speaking at this conference. These are highly
regarded scholars, friends and our mentors. We
are delighted to hear from them. Many of the
keynote speakers are famous names whom many
of you have had the chance to imitate and
emulate, and it is great that we are sharing this
academic platform with them. We are impressed
with the great mix of scholars from a wide range
of disciplines, age, race, gender and
geographical spread.
Security in Kenya
We would like assure those ravelling from
overseas that Kenya is safe for travelling. The
organizing committee has put everything in pace
to ensure the safety of conference participants.
Participants are advised to book hotels in the
CBD and avoid areas such as Langas, Huruma
and Maili Nne.
Weather in Eldoret
The weather in Eldoret is cold and wet around
this time of the year. Conference participant and
other visitors are encouraged to carry warm
clothing. Many of the hotels are found close to
the conference venue and it’s safe to walk in
Eldoret town.
Currency exchange issues
Conference registration can be done on site.
Carry a few dollars for local travel and
expenditure on gifts and souvenirs. Many
payments in Kenya can be done using
MasterCard and visa cards. Hotels and other
services accept these cards although some will
accept only cash, which can be accessed at
various ATM machines of various international
banks such as Barclays Bank and Standard
Bank. Many hotels serve intentional cuisines.
Thanking members of Organizing Committee
I would like to applaud the organizing
committee, for their commitment in responding
to many e-mails and receiving telephone calls
from far and wide, sometimes at odd times and
putting up with all manner of inquiries. I am
glad to introduce the 2016 call for papers on
“Rethinking Development Paradigms in Africa”
found at the end of the programme. We are
expecting abstracts after this year’s conference.
Asante Sana (Thank you very much) and
Welcome (Karibu) to the Kisii University
