As we ring in 2018, it is clear there has never been a more turbulent time to be a physician. We have been assaulted from every side over the past several years, from EHR implementation, increasing insurance regulations, and government intrusion to online reviews, malpractice claims and the opioid crisis. It is now more important than ever that doctors stick together to protect patients and to protect each other. The medical society is here for expressly that reason and I am honored to captain the ship for the coming year. One of our main priorities this year is physician health and well-being. A growing phenomenon increasingly recognized is physician burnout. The medical society has dedicated this year to prioritizing physician burnout prevention. Mark your calendars now for February 2, 2018. We will host dinner for you and your significant other at the Botanical Garden. In “Heart the Healer,” Dr. Dike Drummond– a world renowned, Mayo educated, physician thought leader and expert on physician burnout prevention- will share real world “nuts and bolts” suggestions for “how to go on” when, as the title of his book, Stop Physician Burnout, states, “Working Harder isn’t Working”. He will discuss not only things like “Mindfulness” and “Self Care,” but also “Becoming a Power User for your EHR,” “How to Get Home Fifteen Minutes Earlier” and “How to Handle Encounters with Difficult Patients”. This is just the first in a series of offerings to help physicians stay healthy and happy. The Madison County Medical Society will also be rolling out anonymous counseling available for local physicians. Although it is certainly for those in crisis, we hope that even those who are on the other side of the burnout spectrum may contact the society for assistance as needed. As it is a completely confidential service, there will be no records that may make our colleagues reluctant to reach out. As Maya Angelou said, “We do better when we know better”. Studies show burnout leads to physician errors, self medication, marital dissatisfaction, divorce and even death. If we can remove the stigma of reaching out, we can go a long way toward helping physicians reclaim the joy of practicing medicine. We also continue to advocate for our profession both on the state level and nationally. Consider joining us in Washington DC January 29-31, or in Montgomery April 13 and 14th. We would welcome the opportunity to have you and your family join us as we share with legislators how healthcare policy impacts the exam room and the OR. We are stronger together and you are an important part of what makes our organization great! W MCMS Quarterly Newsletter THE WINTER 2018 Debbie Kolb, MD

What do you like best about your practice? One of the best systems I have put in place is properly staffing and trusting the administration of my current practice. Our set-up allows me to whole heartedly focus on patient care, while I can trust on others to navigate the intricacies of the ever growing landscape of insurance company regulations and programs.

What advice would you give to someone entering the profession of medicine? I have based my career on three pillars. I have always tried to be Available, Affable and Attentive. You should always recognize you are part of a journey in this patient and person’s life. And over time you will recognize people have interesting stories other than just their maladies.

Who has had the most influence on your professional career? Specialists within my community and through my professional stops in America, Canada and Europe have been especially helpful and influential. Establishing relationships through professional networking opportunities and societies has been extremely beneficial. Especially by involving myself and actively participating in the politics of such groups I have been able to stay up to date and plan ahead for changes within the “business of practicing medicine.” Also, by creating and maintaining such relationships I have confidently relied on such relationships with other medical professionals to assist in solid clinical decision making. Tell us about yourself, anything you’d like to share? Born and educated in Ireland, and since I have practiced now both in Canada and Alabama which has provided me a broad base of medical education, perspectives and experiences. I am a husband and father of five children, and am proud to see my family members involve themselves in the medical profession through one discipline or another. As a general and open sports enthusiast I have found common ground and established many personal relationships with my patients.

The Madison County Medical Society has been organized to serve its members as an advocate for the physician/patient relationship, and to promote and preserve the highest standards of professional, educational, and moral conduct.

The Madison County Medical Alliance is full of holiday cheer as we close out 2017! We are so grateful to all of our members, sponsors, and supporters for a truly wonderful year. Members old and new celebrated at our annual Christmas Coffee on Tuesday, December 5th at the gorgeous home of Kim Johnson. Over 55 members, sponsors, and community health partners were in attendance. The MCMA proudly awarded numerous donations to community projects and partners including: the Huntsville Hospital Foundation Mobile Medical Unit, National Children’s Advocacy Center, New Hope Children’s Clinic, North Alabama Medical Reserve Corps, Not One More Alabama, and Alliance to the Medical Association of the State of Alabama Student Scholarship Fund. The MCMA also awarded our annual Service Award to the very-deserving Marie Schneider. We wish all of you a very happy holidays and happy new year!
