Ziibiwing will be CLOSED Christmas Day & New Years Day • OPEN December 26th thru 29th
Autumn Ellie Mitchell (Saginaw Ojibwe/ Eagle Clan) has served on the Ziibiwing Board of Directors since 2013. She received a BA in Linguistics at Michigan State University where she studied Anishinaabemowin under Helen (Roy) Fuhst, and she is also pursuing graduate studies at Central Michigan University.
Recently, at Ziibiwing’sAnnual Membership dinner, Ellie read a poem that she wroteentitled “My Aunties’ Lodge.”
She used as inspiration for thepoem her thoughts and feelings about the Ziibiwing Center.Ellie explains “One night, I could not stop thinking about Ziibiwing – a beautiful and welcoming physical space, where familyrecords and sacred objects are kept, where there is a strong connection to the past, to the ancestors, and to the future. Ziibiwing is like an auntie’s house, but not just one auntie. Many aunties can be felt here – holding us up, encouraging us, and keeping us humble. I tried to express with words that beautiful feeling.”
In addition to her studies and poetry writing, Ellie owns and operates Bead& Powwow Supply, an e-commerce store and mobile powwow shop specializing in supplies for American Indian beaded art and dance regalia. Look for her store at www.powwowsupply.com or on Facebook at Bead & Powwow Supply, LLC - or call (989) 941-5861 for special holiday store access by appointment.
