Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
VOL. 40 | No. 10
DECEMBER 2015/JANUARY 2016
GUEST SPEAKER
Monday, January 18th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandbridge Community Chapel. Please come at 6:45 p.m. and enjoy refreshments with your friends and neighbors.
Letter from the president
Ahhh! The scent of the Christmas season is upon us! And now we have all the seasonal delights and surprises to look forward to.
The holiday home tour began our holidays with festively decorated abodes. This also began the many party gatherings. And to finalize our weekend, Santa arrived at the Fire Station to officially light the Sandbridge Christmas tree with families and delighted children--Christmas is finally here! Ho! Ho! Ho!
Once again, thanks for all the support of the community over the last year. I always feel it is a gift to be here in Sandbridge. The formula of Sandbridge has worked well for all these many years with its unexpected touches that define our signature. That’s my Christmas present!
As we have embarked once again on our year-long journey, cherish the memories of time of those who are no longer with us and enjoy and appreciate those that are. Wishing everyone health, happiness and prosperity for the New Year!
Love where you live!
Live where you love!

The SBCL Meeting was called to order by President Joan Davis at 7:00 p.m. Charles Learned led the membership in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guest Speaker: Vice President Cheryl Caloras introduced guest speaker Wayne Wilcox from Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation who was invited to speak about the Back Bay Grant Update. He presented us with lots of information on proposed transportation alternatives for reaching Back Bay Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge without using personal motor vehicles. For more information, visit the web site at www.vbgov.com/backbaygrant. The public comment period runs until December 4, and then they will finalize their report.
President Joan Davis wished Mike Maloney a very happy birthday!
Business Meeting:
The minutes from the October meeting were approved as written.
treasurer's report: Tim Ferramosca reported the beginning and ending balances for October 2015 were $26,461.09 and $24,374.12, respectively. A motion to pass the budget for 2015-2016 was passed without discussion.
CoMMittee reports:
aCCess ways froM sandfiddler to sandpiper: Frank Meyer said that if we see any problems with any of these access ways, give him a call, and he will have a work order written up for them.
BeautifiCation: Greta Stallings would like to have a hot air balloon painted on our water tower with Sandbridge written on it. It would have to be approved by Public Utilities; let's hope they have joined the bandwagon to brighten up communities!
Bylaws: Cheryl Caloras presented and reviewed three proposed amendments to the SBCL Bylaws. See those proposals in this newsletter. After Cheryl presented the proposals, she tabled any discussions on them until the January meeting when everyone will have had a chance to read and consider the proposals in this newsletter.
environMental: Cheryl Petticrew reminded and encouraged dog owners and everyone else to SCOOP THE POOP!!! It's bad for our environment, it's ugly to have to view, it's not a pleasant sensation in which to step, and it attracts nasty flies in the summer! Also, grease and oils are not meant to be poured down drains; they manage only to clog up sewer pipes and cause problems for our neighbors. Stash grease in empty coffee cans, bag it and put it in the trash.
MeMBership: Charlie Ellin reported that we now have 842 household memberships! Charlie still has the new 2015-2016 directories on sale for $5.00 and decals for $1.00 each.
newsletter: Jane Stilley/Jim Belcher reminded everyone that there will be no newsletter in January. When sending information for the newsletter by email, please place NEWSLETTER in the subject line.
road repaving and repair/water tower: Whiting Lane is now scheduled to be done by the end of this year or the beginning of 2016. Shad Lane is still on the books but delayed because the scope of the work has been expanded.
BaCk Bay: Bob McMillin has been in contact with Game and Inland Fisheries, and they have suggested a Clean Up the Bay Day to pull up abandoned damaged duck blinds.
tour of hoMes: Judy Donahue and Donna Russell reported that this event will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. Tickets are $20.00 apiece if purchased in advance, $25.00 if purchased at the door.
ChristMas tree lighting: Mike Maloney reported that there will be a slight change in tradition this year in that the Christmas tree will go up, and the lights will be turned on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Santa will be arriving on Sunday, December 6 with the tree already lighted. The tree is always so festive, so let's enjoy it a little longer! The Sandbridge Community Chapel will present “A Candy Kane Christmas” at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18! For ticket information, call 757-721-3105.
unfinished Business: The city’s “event homes” presentation by Bill Macali and Karen Lasley was rescheduled until after this meeting. This session will simply brief City Council with a first draft of a possible manner to address this issue. This will be a topic for our January meeting.
The meeting was adjoined at 8:16 p.m. The next civic league meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at the Sandbridge Community Chapel.
Respectfully Submitted,Kay Scafone, Secretary

The Sandbridge community and Sandbridge Beach Civic League would like to give a big thank you to Judy Donahue, Donna Russell and Cindy Graf (now in Guam) for heading up and coordinating this year's highly successful Sandbridge by the Sea: Christmas Tour of Homes. They worked non-stop and relentlessly to make this the best one yet with record attendance! Most importantly, every cent raised goes to the Food Bank of SE Virginia and the Virginia Beach SPCA. Judy and Donna's letter to the community is below.
From Judy Donahue & Donna Russell and the Sandbridge Tour of Homes Committee: Christmas wishes do come true! The Sandbridge community came together on Saturday, December 5 and opened its homes and hearts to the City of Virginia Beach and beyond. The Sandbridge Tour of Homes will be presenting the Food Bank of South East Virginia and the Virginia Beach SPCA each a $5,000 check that will keep on giving. Thank you to all those who participated. Fall clean-up provides huge success story
By Kevin Wong
James Barton and I have been organizing the Sandbridge community spring and fall clean-ups for the last 10 years. Each year we are thrilled that we live in such a wonderful community where neighbors and friends come out and support each other to help keep our community clean and vibrant.
On November 1, 2015, we had more than 60 volunteers who came out and met at Little Island to get their street assignments. As I drove around Sandbridge to assess the clean-up, I was happy to see the efforts of all the families who helped and really enjoyed themselves during this beautiful afternoon.
First, I would like to thank James and Guy Eberhart for commanding and organizing the street assignments. Also, Joan Davis and John Barnes with the City of Virginia beach Department of Waste Management who organized the city truck for the bulky items.
Following the cleanup, we had a wonderful barbecue at Little Island Park. With James, Guy and JP Eberhart on the grill and Fred Greene cutting the ribs, we all had a great lunch. This year, I would like to thank Randy Kirkland for providing live TV at Little Island for everyone to watch Sunday football.
We would like to thank the following businesses for their support: Aloha Pool Services, Beach Paper & Chemical, Siebert Realty, Sandbridge Realty and the Boardwok Restaurant.
As everyone can see, we live in a great community; each spring and fall, James and I truly enjoy getting everyone together for this wonderful event. As I watch our kids and their friends roam along the streets of Sandbridge picking up trash, having conversations, laughing, and most of all having fun and performing good deeds, I realize how lucky we all are to live here.
Keep up the good work Sandbridge residents; we live in a special place! Thanks again for all the help and support.

GOLFING FOR A GOOD CAUSEBy Jim Belcher
The third time certainly proved the charm for the 10th Annual Sandbridge Realty Charity Golf Tournament.
After twice having to postpone the tournament because of weather-related concerns (thank you Hurricane Joaquin!), the tournament fell on a perfect fall day in early November at Oceana’s Hornet Golf Course. With warm temperatures, gentle breezes and some fall colors still evident, the charity tournament went off without a hitch.
The perfect golf weather produced predictable results as scores fell quite low with firm fairways and soft greens for the captain’s choice format. Gail Thompson’s team won the women’s division with a remarkable 16-under-par score. Sam Dowdy’s group was right behind with 15 under par to cop the men’s title.
In addition to sub-par rounds and many memorable shots, other highlights included the nurse’s station, the Buffalo Wild Wings pit stop and all the many wonderful amenities provided by Sandbridge Realty. April Stremel and her professional crew certainly produced an event for the ages.
The annual charity event raises funds for many worthy Sandbridge events, including the Easter Egg Hunt at Little Island and the Memorial Day Parade as well as local churches and childcare efforts in our community.
We Remember Our Sandbridge Neighbors & FriendsEarlene Cheshire Bonney: Called to her heavenly home on October 25, 2015 at the age of 88. Earlene was a long-standing member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and a charter member of Metro Women’s Golf Association and Red Wing Lake W.G.A. and Stumpy Lake Women’s Golf Association. She is survived by her husband of 68 years Vernon, two of her three children, five grandchil-dren, and five great-grandchildren as well as a host of other family members.
Jimbo Borum: Known for his gravelly voice and his good humor, Jimbo was the familiar face and iconic personality at the Sandbridge Seaside Market for nearly two decades. Jimbo, who was 65 years young, fought a valiant battle against lung cancer. He passed away on November 15, 2015 surrounded by his loving family, including his three sons and daughter, Sarah, who he described as “the light of his life.” Jimbo had previously been a longtime bartender at the Baja restaurant, which helped raise money for his care through the Baja Surf Classic. Jimbo’s friends from across the region, including his Market co-workers, all turned out for his funeral services and a reception in Portsmouth. Afterwards, his Sandbridge friends and family members honored his memory during a social at the Baja. At Jimbo’s request, people attending all events were encouraged to wear beach attire. Once again, Jimbo made sure he was the life of the party!
Hank Gardner, 90, a longtime resident of Sandbridge, passed away from natural causes on November 23. Hank was co-author of the book "From the Beach to the Bay, An Illustrated History of Sandbridge in Virginia." He spent most of his 42-year career as an assistant superintendent in the Arlington school system, but he owned a vacation home in Sandbridge since 1977. He retired here in the late '80s. Hank was very active in civic affairs in Sandbridge and was Civic League president in 2000.
Hank is survived by his wife of 15 years, Frances Howell, who is also a longtime Sandbridge resident. The couple moved to Buffalo Junction, Virginia in 2007. Hank is also survived by a nephew, with whom he was very close.
WE MISS YOU, JIMBO!(photo: Jimbo Borum at the Sandbridge Seaside Market)

SANDBRIDGE NEWS, DECEMBER 2015 11
The 36th Annual Pig Picking capped off another great summer for the fund-
raising activities of the Booster Committee of the Sandbridge Volunteer
Rescue Squad. The Booster Committee was formally organized in the 1970s
to raise funds to support the operations of the volunteer rescue squad and
purchase ambulances which then cost between $60,000 and $70,000. Today
our mission remains the same but a new ambulance now costs over $180,000
and we have three ambulances that respond to calls throughout Virginia Beach.
Accordingly, the Committee has over the years increased our membership and
expanded our fund-raising activities—Bingo and the Pig Picking.
The ten Wednesday night Bingo games at the Fire & Rescue Station this
Summer netted over $17,000! Over 2,000 players participated averaging
approximately 200 players each night and an all time attendance record was
established in July when 306 visitors crowded the station. A special debt of
gratitude is owed to Cary Shreve, Dougie Ford, Karen Moyer, Sean Back, Ken
Rose, and Jay Crowley who worked nearly every game. Thank you all.
The September 12th Pig Picking was very successful with over $61,000 raised.
There were 536 sponsors, over 2,200 tickets sold, and 1,832 adults and 74
children fed. With the exception of a five minute rain downpour, the weather
was perfect, the entertainment outstanding, and the food preparation by
Beach Bully superb. "Atta Boys" to Pig Picking Chairman Mike Maloney, Craft
Chairman Ann Bohannon for her demonstrated patience and professionalism,
and Charles Learned for his meticulous sponsorship record keeping.
A special thanks to Siebert Realty (Kate Findlater who sold 468 tickets),
Sandbridge Realt, SBH Real Estate, Sandbridge Blue, and Beach Pro's who sold
over 759 tickets and donated a variety of beer cups. My personal thanks to
Jean Siebert, Chris Kneut, Kat Donald and Kathy Frierson for their year-round
support and the continual updating of the booster data base without which the
Pig Picking would not be so successful.
Both Bingo and the Pig Picking would not have been possible without the hard
work of the Boosters. Like the community they support, the 62 Boosters are
a unique group of individuals who come from a variety of backgrounds with
varied interests and activities. However, they all have one common attribute—a
shared affection for Sandbridge and the Volunteer Rescue Squad. They have
my thanks and admiration for a job well done and they deserve the thanks of
the Sandbridge Community.

I recall our first community Christmas tree was in 1980, the year my father, Bill Story, died. Sam Ames, an active member of St. Simon’s by the Sea Episcopal Church, decided to have a tree in front of the chapel dedicated and decorated in memory of my dad who loved Sandbridge Beach even before there were houses here. As early as 1949, we would come to swim and spend the day on the beach. Then, in the spring of 1953, we bought a small, newly constructed cottage so we could spend nights and entire summers as this beach community began and started to grow. Having a Christmas tree in his honor, after he died, was a comfort to me and I took pleasure for many years attending the lighting and watching the children talk to Santa and eat cookies. My son Christopher, who is now 46 years old, remembers running around St. Simon’s with Michelle Bybee and Eric Coulson, waiting for Santa and the lighting of the tree. This piece of history is mostly forgotten and the current tree, a perfect one, is now beautifully adorned with bright lights and located across the street at the fire station. Santa still comes and the children and families eat cookies and sing carols and appreciate the spirit of St. Nick and the holiday season. When I returned from a lengthy visit to Colorado, arriving back in Sandbridge late at night, I felt happy to have the beautiful tree greet me and say with shining lights that the season of love and celebration was in full swing at Sandbridge Beach.
December is a month of wonderful parties, plays and pageants, and special musical productions. Friends and families gather to celebrate. Some of us reach out to one another with cards or e-mails or FaceBook greetings, phone calls, or visits. It is a month for giving and receiving and it is a time to contemplate and to remember others and, perhaps, recall some Christmas past. Joys and sadnesses blend and mix together in our minds. I think of Hazel and Graydon Sterling. I remember Karen Barton and Mary Linehan and Mary Dorsey. Sarah Holmes is still with me in my heart. Now Al Rohlfing who lived a long life of love and joy is gone and Betty Wells, with all his friends and family, will miss him dearly. Jimbo Borum lives on in our memories and minds. Fran Gardner phoned to say her husband Hank died last month. He was 90 and had lived in Sandbridge for many happy years. She said she knew his friends would want to know. She’s right. We do.
So as the parties wind down and the New Year begins, may the love and wonderment of the season stay with us all year long.
